Of course it went forward a million miles at least once. But I'm a Kiwi and, even as a 12-year-old kid watching that, I knew I'd seen something immortal. Still gives me goosebumps and still and forever the greatest try of all time.

It was a beautiful moment in rugby time. Both sides had agreed to play running rugby and it was a great match with fantastic tries on both sides.

It is know throughout the Rugby World as "That Try". The great man Cliff Morgan with his magical commentary, he was a late stand-in for Bill McLaren who had been unwell. "Kirkpatrick to Williams. This is great stuff. Phil Bennett covering. Chased by Alistair Scown. Brilliant! Oh, that's brilliant! John Williams, Bryan Williams. Pullin. John Dawes, great dummy. To David, Tom David, the half-way line! Brilliant by Quinnell! This is Gareth Edwards! A dramatic start! What a score! Oh, that fellow Edwards!" […] If the greatest writer of the written word would have written that story, no one would have believed it. That really was something. Their numbers are becoming fewer with the passing years but they will be remember by Rugby fans everywhere for "That Try".

The game is available on DVD. I bought it years ago, but it would be great to watch in pub with some lads. NZ would be ashamed to see that wimpy Haka.

@@raytreherne26 Yes, it is on dvd, and I’ll play it when I need cheering up. The downside is that the picture is rather grainy now. I agree with you Sam. Surely the Golden Anniversary would be a great time to remaster the original coverage so that we could watch it on TV in HD.

I was in our local (Limavady) rugby club, having played for my (Limavady Grammar) school team back in Northern Ireland. It was packed to the door and the pints we're flowing. We'd won our early morning game and the club had narrowly lost to one of the top Ulster clubs - Antrim, if I'm not mistaken - at that time, but everyone was focused on the game. I'll never forget it.

Veiwed this many, many times. Watched it live as a young lad. A few observations: - On the longer video, you can hear two Welsh 8 year kids throwing their opinions around. Then one of them giving John Pullin the gears before the line out. Hilarious stuff. - Edwards was facing the wrong way half way through the play. - Close your eyes and listen to it again. Every time one of the players makes a spectacular play, the cheering just gets louder and louder.

Morgan wasn't supposed to do the game. Bill McLaren was ill that day. Fitting then that a Welsh commentator should have the call of 6 Welshmen, and an Englishman, in Cardiff for a piece of all around sports greatness.

It would have been an injustice for UK rugby greats like JPR, Gibson, Bennett, Edwards, Davies, McBride etc, not to have been on a winning team against the ABs on UK soil as they did for the Barbarians in 1973. Their own home nation teams came close in the 70s to beating them so this Barbarian victory is special.

Ha, ha. Alas, these days that would be brought back to the 22 for the high tackle on JPR (playing advantage from then on) as a result of the forward pass from Quinnell. But, given the refereeing and lack of technology at the time a great try none the less.
