Very perceptive review. This is this greatest fusion band of all time which was not helmed by Miles Davis. [Early Return to Forever is very close.] And although it was John McLauglhin's conception all the way, the most incredible playing is indeed by Billy Cobham.

I was a really good drummer when I saw M.O. at the Whiskey A Go Go. I was 19 years old and I was practicing 3 to 5 hours a day. I had an edge over a lot of guys because I could play Jazz. Back in the day not as many drummers did. Billy Cobham blew me away. He wasn't a Rock, Jazz, Latin, Classical, New Orleans Second Line or Tribal drummer. He was not of this earth. For a half a year I practiced 6-7 hours a day. And then at a certain point I realized I would have to forgo sleep to get anywhere this guys solar system. He was that great. Thanks for the share.

When you stop and think about this masterpiece. Good God Man!! wasn't it just incredible. 1972 was a monster year for jazz fusion, and prog rock. And to the guy who commented that Cobham is not human. Goodness, you got that RIGHT!! Saw Billy and his band in 1987 at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and my jaw was on the floor the entire night. You're right, he is a MONSTER!!

Billy was and still is a force of nature. I saw them live in Pittsburgh in the early 1970s and was absolutely blown away. He was one of the reasons I ended up with a Fibes drum set.

The synchronicity between the three melodocists and the incredible backing of the rhythm section, here they are at the height og their powers. When I saw them, August 73, what ended up being between nothingness & eternity, they were starting to unravel. You couldn’t tell at the concert but years later to look back at performances like this and compare it to the Central Park show, like I said, they were at the height of their powers in Munich in 72

That is some otherworldly virtuosic playing going on there. It sounds so spontaneous and a lot of time it is and then Jan, Jerry and John lock down on a riff and you see the amount of control and mind blowing musical knowledge and understanding that is behind it all. Billy showed up for a drum clinic a few years back at the Bath House Cultural Center here in Dallas and I stumbled in to see who was making so much noise - since it was free -and when I saw who was playing I about pee'd my pants because I had been following all of them since back in 72. He didn't break any sticks in the clinic but he did break the drumset after about 45 minutes - much to the chagrin of the dudes throwing the gig. Billy played on anyway. That guy has alot of class.

Saw them many times in the NY metro area when I was in college. The best was at Woolsey Hall, Yale, 1973 . . . it was oversold and they let us sit in the isles. We got up VERY close to the stage and it was the greatest concert experience of my life. They did three encores and JM comes back out, very apologetic, to tell us Billy can't play anymore, he's totally cramped up! Billy was a great football player, and he was ambidextrous which probably helped his drumming. We can debate styles, but for sheer power and speed, nobody comes close to Billy Cobham.

I remember seeing them in the beginning at the Cafe au go go, in the village. Years before at the same place I saw the 1st gigs of Cream and Hendrix. Well when I saw Mahavisnu I was already playing the drumzz about 12 years and I thought I knew what i was doing. Tell you what I almost gave up the instrument, i was so totally ashamed at what little I knew,Billy Cobham rearranged my thought process, much in the same way, Buddy Rich did, and Ginger Baker did. The whole band made me realize you can never not excel to a higher level of musicianship. Cobham took the drumzz to another level at that time. I'm still playing today and still learning thanks to Buddy,Ginger,Billy.

Experiencing the album "Inner Mounting Flame" while on LSD is still one of the most memorable and thrilling events in my almost 50 years of listening to music. I opened the album, put it on then wound up playing both sides continuously over and over all through the night. I've never stopped coming back to visit that amazing soundscape.

Correct. There are several good vids of them, and watching them, and this one, gives me chills every time I listen to it. This is the greatest gathering of genius jazz rock folks that has ever existed. It is surreal to watch and listen to this. Also, BC is not from this Earth. There is not a single drummer before or since (and I know of most) that can combine his complete mastery of stick control, finger control, open-handed playing, pure speed and power, poly-rythyms, odd time sigs, and utterly insane taste no matter what. He is in league by himself.

Through amazing clips like this we "youngsters" get chances to appreciate how unbelievable the real thing was. I read an article in a magazine about Mahavishnu Orchestra around 1974. It caught my interest. Then I found and bought a cassette of Birds of fire next year. Didn't really get it together when I listened at home ( first side) that night.But... Next day was a different story! One word with the historical drumsolo. I was absolutely hypnotized. Listened to the entire cassette every day for a year or so. So this is kind of a fundament for me as a musician and percussion teacher.

I've played a LOT of hostile gigs, and I've gotta say they are some of my FAVES, b/c i love a challenge. EX: i played a variety show iN NYC with an open bar, and it was a year after 9/11 and I was blackout drunk by the time my 3-song set happened (me on aggressive 12 string acoustic guitar and vocals)...so i remember NOTHING from my set, but there were 3 cameras filming... and what happened was I got onstage and was too drunk to play, and one dude inthe audience kept heckling me, and then said he was FDNY, and so I said "then where's your mustache?" etc, and i then, IN A BLACKOUT, invited him up onstage (cuz he was drunk too from the open bar!) and, since i couldn't play my songs, we HECKLED EACH OTHER ONSTAGE for my entire 15 minute set! (I love being heckled, bc i can usually out-heckle anyone! Sooo much fun trying to win over your enemies!)

This is one of the best 5 piece ensembles that THESE humans happen to produce by hooking up with each other to play this music. They jammed and played the tuti figures so well together. Their dynamics are perfect. Goodman's solo in You Know You topped this concert off. That music obviously is created around Bill Cobhams drumming with all members listening closely to that musical tempest. One of the greatest musicians ever. On par with Armstrong, Parker, Reinhard, Coltrane. A creator of a distinctive style of dealing with a musical instrument. McLaughlin also belongs to that realm.

Saw them walked in, they started playing and I forgot to sit down - the most powerful band I’ve ever seen! Also saw them open for Zappa... he seemed pissed off and didn’t talk much/ after the power of Maha the Zappa vibe was so hard to get into! Ty Uploader

the band is not only cobham, yes he was one of the best and he is one of the great drummers, but he is not the only one super amazing in the band, john is one of the best guitarrists, like hammer or jerry.... cammon......, and lair is a best bassist than a lot of people thinkin.... the band was amazing and a true pioners, when the music was a true thing, wooww, artistic freedom, what a beautifull thing..... and now all this horrible things people call artist in the radio..., fucktop.., and im a young guy...., not from this era..., but still the best one..., artist were creative...
