All the stories of selkies that I know involve a human kidnapping them, so I imagine this was the same. I interpret the “after many persuasions” as being code for this, and it makes the story be about a poor seal girl who got kidnapped and managed to escape from her captors with all their money. It makes it way happier.
@thepip35994 жыл бұрын
Oh. I just realized that that interpretation of it makes the line “he invited her down to his cabin below” have some rapey tones to it. Yikes. Well, that makes her eventual victory even more heroic.
@thepip35994 жыл бұрын
@@h_towns I imagined that they kidnapped her but left her coat behind on the shore.
@thedancingdivaofdaviestree23202 жыл бұрын
@@thepip3599 Yes, he will die if he can't "have" that maid on the shore. Does her consent matter? Apparently not. He offers to pay his sailors to "persuade" her, and does NOT offer to share his wealth with her. This pirate mermaid or selkie has the last laugh, however. (One hopes they learn to invite rather than kidnap next time. )
