I actually connected more with the book even though it has its fails. My good friend lost her mom, brother and mom in less than 10 years so it seemed possible to me. And I find it a good thing how we either connect with characters depending on our own stories. I suspected Zoe early on since the other characters seemed a bit too obvious but I also assumed she had someone helping her which was totally wrong. I also like how it thinly connects to The Silent Patient. What I disliked the most was the unanswered questions. For instance, why didn’t the police offer protection to students or issued a curfew? After the first victim I guess but after 2 members of the same group died, the police didn’t follow them? Nope. Also how did Zoe lure them or convinced them to follow her when they didn’t seem to like her even a little? I understand the deeply troubled nature of Zoe who after a huge loss in her life and being a vulnerable child is groomed by a narcissist sociopath. I also understand that he would have fooled Mariana, what I wish had been different is the choppy narrative as a result of those wholes in the story.

This is pretty good, not near good as The Silent Patient but the Open Endedness was a real pisser!!

I haven’t read The Silent Patient but after reading The Maidens, I’m never going to. I worked out early on in the book that Zoey was the murderer and that the main lady’s ex-husband had a major role in that. It was a very silly book and considering I don’t read books like that (that was my first and last) I shouldn’t have been able to work it out so quickly but I did. Definitely a terrible book.

The Silent Patient is much better but this is still pretty good, just disliked the “Open endedness”
