Do you try to keep your creations out of the sun? I wonder if there is anything to do to keep the colors vibrant without fading.

Hiya. Yeah, many papers (even high-quality) fade in direct sunlight. Some spray-on varnishes offer UV protection, but I have never tested them. I just don't put my sculptures in direct sunlight.💛

Corrie Beth - how do you cause the bleaching of the paper here prior to putting on the marker? I have your book but the Oxalis in that is the green variety and I’d love to make this dark purple one.

I paint on the bleach with a paintbrush and then spritz it with water to make the bleach bleed/blend a little. Some papers bleach better than others. The one I used in this video was from paper source.

I was really enjoying watching the process, but as soon as it got to cutting the foam base it immediately stopped being enjoyable as I became aware of the plastic waste and how that will be going into the environment. I don’t consider myself a super-aware person of those types of things usually. It’s interesting as it’s so beautiful watching your art imitate nature... but the foam was such a stark contrast that it kinda “jerked” my brain out of how pretty it was. As satisfying as pushing that metal wire into the foam must be.... I wonder if there is something you could use in its place that could elevate the experience and be environmentally better? I like the idea of it being art that is almost compostable.... maybe that’s wishful thinking. But also what a cool challenge as the paper is already partially there? Regardless, hope this doesn’t come across as critical.... overall very impressed with your creative eye and patience!

Hi Kara. Thanks for your comment. I am sorry to hear you didn't have an enjoyable experience watching my video. It's true, with a lot of art practices, many things are not environmentally sustainable. That is true for painting, welding, even crochet-all of them have some pitfall, whether it be water resources, mining, you name it. It is easier to spot the offense here, as styrofoam is such a turn-off. I understand. In my case, I use the styrofoam multiple times; I rarely throw it out. In my book, I talk about alternatives: several cardboard layers or one can even use the styrofoam that comes with a new electronic that you would be tossing anyway-all of which I do. If you end up doing this craft or following any of my tutorials and stumble across another way to hold the wire stems in place, I would love to hear. Thanks so much!
You should try papermaking and make paper that would be almost identical to the real thing
