I remember my brother buying Spelunky on the Playstation store and I was kind of critical of him saying there were plenty of AAA/big titles to buy, but I ended up playing it. I liked the game enough, but I couldn't get through the mines initially. I kept trying, and kept learning the game. Eventually I honed in on the skills/knowledge to get to, and ultimately through, Hell. The further I got, the more I appreciated the secrets and thoughtfulness that went into the game. Not much in gaming matches the satisfaction of emerging victorious from the other side of Hell in Spelunky! Now I consider it in the top 10 games I've ever played. It's so fun, and has so much replay value, and you never know what will happen on any given run. Anyone watching this who hasn't played it, it's a must.

Amen, it's why I get annoyed at people who rag on Game Maker, if nothing more it gets people (like me) into game development, even if it's at an entry level.
@animowany1117 жыл бұрын
I do believe that Game maker is a nice tool to get started with, if you don't already have programming knowledge. However one thing that annoys me is the amount of "big" indie games written in Game maker. For example, Risk of Rain. In RoR you experience frequent crashes, lag issues, bugs due to engine limitations, which could be avoided by using another language + game engine. But yeah, game maker is perfect for simple games when you're learning, like RPGs or classic game clones.

@@GameArts1 That's honestly why I've started torrenting games that I'm unsure of in terms of my enjoyment with them. Sometimes it takes more than a couple of hours of gameplay to know how a game sits with you, and when you're strapped for cash like me, it's hard to make decisions based entirely off of other peoples experiences with games. I don't want to spend money on a game I'd ultimately want a refund for, and then not be able to get my money back because I wanted to give the game a fair chance. Spelunky 2 was one of the games I did pay for though. Not only does it offer more than plenty of value for its relatively low price point, but everything about the way the game feels just made me instantly want to delete that copy and go support the developers in the most direct way possible. And I did! It's honestly the pinnacle of platforming controls in my opinion, the controls are responsive, tight, and the game expands on your movement in a lot of ways that have a lot of depth. Along with that, while I've never experienced it, online play with this game looks to be quite enjoyable, and the humor of the game boosts exponentially when playing with other people, both new and experienced. While I won't do anything so rash as to encourage you to get into torrenting specifically for this game, maybe try and find someone who does have the game and ask them what makes the game stand out to them, or even ask them if you could try a couple of runs with them on steam remote play, I believe you can do that without needing a copy of the game yourself. Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are really both great examples of lighting in a bottle, with Spelunky 2 harvesting what made the first game special and forming an even stronger game with that foundation. It really is quite amazing what these games have accomplished, and I can't wait to see what he does next with his future titles.

Man, I bought Spelunky in June 2014, and I'm still playing it. I'd stop for a month or two then turn it on while bored or unsure of what to play then spend the next 3 weeks chipping at it again. It's insane how much comfort I find in the play systems. It's like this beautiful painting that you loved when you bought and, sometimes when you're passing the wall it's hung on, you pause and stare. It's so perfect. I have a ton of memories with it. From bringing my laptop around to play a little versus with some friends in cafes, to making out with an ex while the game just sort of sat there waiting on an input, to spending transit times in airports with it, to watching hours of various streamers doing various things with it. More than a lot of indie games that I cherish, Spelunky has a sort of succinctness in design that makes it feel kind of like an artefact. The rules are very simple but the variations are complex. There's no point in talking about how its designed because it's right there in the doc, but the merger of classic game design and consistency in in-world behaviour and aesthetic makes it probably my favourite game of all time. I don't think I'll ever get sick of it.

This was a real nice treat! I remember Derek Yu from way back during those K&P-Days, back then he was someone that I think a lot of people looked up to a lot. Even his really early work stood out in the K&P-scene as really good stuff. I was doing a bunch of smaller games and working on a bigger top down death match style shooter in The Games Factory (the sequel to K&P) with a friend I made over in the US. Blastorama Games we called ourselves. And I remember Derek showed off some screens from Eternal Daugther on the forums and everyone was really really blown away and excited, I think for like years after that. I was always wondering why it was taking so long for it to come out, seems like it was years in the making, and this does shed some light into that. Even though these applications are very intuitive and easy to work with. Making something like eternal daugther or more advanced stuff, really does take a lot of skill.

Great video. The only time I truly bought into a 'mystery' that turned out to be a myth was resurrecting Aeris in FFVII. I didn't have access to the Internet (primitive as it was at that point :P), but a friend of mine did, and he printed out a hundred or so pages of tips, secrets and rumours. We had no idea which were genuine and which were fake, but the most compelling had something to do with finding fish flakes to get back to where Aeris was killed and acquiring Holy materia, which would allow you to resurrect her. It was consistent with the lore of the game, and seemed eminently plausible, but after many hours of following this long chain of random stuff you were supposed to do... that fish just wouldn't go away.

I love your documentaries man, they all show us a lot of what make games so special and they make me fell proud to be a gamer.

I absolutely love how much K&P features in this and props to you Danny for doing enough digging to mention "The Wall". Astrospoon was a really fun game, and I'm gutted Trigger Happy 2 was never finished.

Excellent Doc! Very refreshing to see people involved with a game project who are positive, polite and seem like genuine people. Also, doesn't hurt that it's about such an amazing game too. ;)

2:32 now imagine if you will, if their parent had instead told them they weren't special or didn't have artistic talent or should not follow their passion? How many future game makers are being squashed every day?

It kind of floors me that he feels the Ice Caves are a break. The abyss always stresses me out so much more than the levels you can’t fall down the bottom of.
@JG_Wentworth4 жыл бұрын
Well, you can take things a lot slower in the ice caves because theres not a constant barrage of enemies around you at all times. The biggest threat is probably the aliens, not because of their attack, but because of how unpredictable their ship is when you try to destroy it. You're a lot better off just avoiding them and continuing to take the caves slow, looking down often to see what's below you and where you can jump.

Haha, I remember that Jack Thompson-inspired game, TIGSource, CrypticSea, and all that. Nice to see all those early indie game community people and relics again. Thanks for yet another awesome documentary!

I bet Derek, and Eirik would be fun to hang out with. And the music philosophy was pretty cool. I love the triangular approach to it.

I remember playing the very old freeware version of Spelunky many years ago. I loved it. Glad to see they had such success eventually.

Holy guacamole. Seeing Trigger Happy again was massively unexpected. I remember playing this as a kid. It was included on one of those 100 games in one discs.. Wow.

Excellent video, though I have to admit I was very surprised that there wasn't a single mention of Spelunker whatsoever.

Brilliant stuff. Cool to hear Derek talk about the game as though no decision was ever really intense or serious.

I want to be an indie developer, this documentary was very inspiring. After I watched this video a chain of events, two days in the making unfolded and a bunch of stupid bullshit splashed up into my face. If I hadn't watched this, and had my mood uplifted, my day would be so fucking depressing, the kind that shadows you for weeks and makes you question everything. Thanks for making my day Noclip and developers of Spelunky, I haven't played the game yet but this was still very inspiring to watch, I'm definitely going to pick it up soon. And I just discovered this channel after seeing the Bethesda and Fallout 76 documentaries, when pay day comes around Im becoming a patreon for sure.
