Super Mario Kart went on to become a 16-bit classic and one of the best selling Super Nintendo games of all time. But Super Mario Kart's origins didn't even start as a Mario game. From an unsucessful two player F-Zero game to one of Nintendo's longest running franchises, this is the story of how Nintendo failed into Super Mario Kart.

No problem! Another option for 3D stuff is Blender. It's a great and free alternative to Cinema 4D that can pretty much do everything C4D can. I actually used a bit of Blender in my two videos before this one and will probably switch to it after my Cinema 4D license expires.

Well said Modern Vintage Gamer, this brought back so many moments from back in the release days. I remember reading about the game and knowing I needed it… many years later it still holds the value as one on my favorite game series. This video reminded me that this may not have ever been a piece of history with out mistakes, failures, hardware restrictions and a great team of folks who used those losses as wins.

Thanks for making this, bro. Me and my sister played this game a lot. The AI pissed us off so much that we nicknamed some of the enemy characters. Princess was Cesspool, and DK Jr. was Butt-Lard, and I think Yoshi was Stupid Lizard (I forgot the other names we had for the other characters). If one of them were particularly harassing my sister, we'd team up on it with items even if we lost the race. I remember f-ing Princess would poop those mushrooms, shrink you, and the one of the other characters would go completely out of their way to run you over. Every aspect of this game was absolute genius.

This game holds a special place in my heart, as does the SNES. I had a tough childhood, especially during middle school, and I largely credit the SNES for getting me through that period. The SNES is still my favorite. I was 12, almost 13 in late 1992. I was very lucky that I had a SNES early on, and I got Super Mario Kart right when it was released. I get chills looking at the box in this video. I still remember playing it for the first time. The music. The graphics. The feeling of hitting someone with a shell. What a time to be 12! Truly magical. I was into 1 player adventure and role playing games, which my friends and family weren't into. But EVERYBODY played Super Mario Kart. I have so many memories of so many people as a kid playing that game. I had a lonely, isolated childhood, and I was very unpopular in school. When people would come over to my house and play Super Mario Kart with me, those were some of the few times I felt normal and happy. One of the very best games I've ever owned. F-Zero 2 would have sucked. Cheers.

Thanks so much Bruno. I appreciate the years of support. It’s pretty crazy, KZbin suddenly decided to really, really, recommend my old Goldeneye video to people the last two weeks and it’s added a ton of subscribers. It seems like I might hit 100K this week. It’s very surreal. I never thought I’d get here.

Props to your 3d animator - great production quality! Even noticed the specular highlights coming off the tv when a video played, showing that the video was rendered within the full scene instead of superimposed on top. Nice touch!
