Brendan Fraser auditioned twice for the title character before portraying the lead role in George of the Jungle. Tony Goldwyn auditioned for the title role as well, and according to co-director Kevin Lima, Goldwyn landed it because of "the animal sense" in his readings, along with some "killer baboon imitations". For the signature Tarzan yell, Lima and Buck desired the traditional yell, although Goldwyn faced difficulties with providing the yell stating, "It's really hard to do, physically." His co-star Brian Blessed who does the voice of Clayton in the film ultimately provided the yell. Terk was originally written as a male gorilla, but following Rosie O'Donnell's audition, Terk was re-characterized as a female. Furthermore, Woody Allen was initially cast as the neurotic elephant Tantor. However, Katzenberg persuaded Allen to leave the project for DreamWorks Pictures' Antz and in exchange, the studio would distribute his next four films. Agreeing to the deal, Allen departed from Tarzan in 1996 and was replaced by Wayne Knight. Many of Minnie Driver's mannerisms and characteristics were incorporated into Jane's animation. The scene where Jane describes meeting Tarzan for the first time to her father and Clayton was improvised by Driver, resulting in Ken Duncan animating one of the longest animated scenes on record. The scene took 7 weeks to animate and 73 feet of film. To see how Tarzan's body would move while sliding down a log, the animators based his movement on that of pro skateboarder Tony Hawk while on his skateboard. Rosie O'Donnell accomplished a lifelong dream in this movie; she had always wanted to voice a character in a Disney animated movie. The reason why the character of Terk is female in this movie is that, according to producer Bonnie Arnold, when male actors auditioned for the part, none of them clicked. When Rosie O'Donnell stepped in to audition, it worked and she got the part. Arnold said of the gender change: "You don't have to be a guy to be a best friend."

Tarzan has a lot of depth. One example is the fact that at the very start of the film there are 3 deaths: Kala’s baby and Tarzan’s parents. Tarzan also kills an animal. Then there are 2 more deaths at the end. The music and visuals also show depth. But it was a perfect mix of comedy and serious elements. A masterpiece imo.

Glen Keane animated Tarzan at the Disney animation studio in Paris, while Ken Duncan animated Jane in California. They regularly kept contact to make the scenes between Jane and Tarzan work.

1999 I was in school had my summer break in 99' that year when Tarzan came out in 1999 I remember when I was elementary school we was music class behind the curtain in the cafeteria in Seat Pleasant all myself Deonte Lamar Merritt was watching this movie with other students Sing along from Disney movies those were the days I remember sitting in the front on the television watching it I was born in 1991 early 1990s and remember my days and myself in the grades I was in and everything at home I love myself alot I love Tarzan but I love Toy Story more cause I Sheriff Woody Pride 12 inch Pull Sting Action Figure doll I loved that toy back when I lived in Hyattsyville in 97' the 90s was those days those were the days my memories will always be remembered
