Me and my ex liked fiance because it can pass as androgynous. We were both working on early gender transition at the time, and it helped us avoid those moments of mentally checking out of a conversation in order to decide if you're going to say "girlfriend" or "boyfriend". (I used to variously call them both.) Logically I prefer spouse as well, but saying wife and husband is fun, even if we're both non-binary.
