I bought one a while ago and it's been a great bike so far. Just finished touring around the Highlands of Scotland with my wife on the back and a full top box and managed 256 miles on a tank with 3 litres left. Handling feels pretty sharp and confidence inspiring. Comfort for rider and pillion is very good and I'm told the pillion seat is more comfortable than my previous bikes, a KTM 1090s and a Kawasaki Versys 650. I fitted radiator guard, rear hugger, top box and heated grips. The bike was a bit of a bargain and got a pre reg for £7995. My son was with us on the trip and has a Versys 650 and is keen to do a track day so not doubt the Vstrom 800re will be circulating round Knockhill at some point. Great review and as someone it's the goldilocks of bikes which I have to agree with.

Thank you, Michael, for another well thought out and researched motorcycle review. I believe this Suzuki is very good value for money, and I would personally consider owning one were it not for the issue of my currently owning one or two bikes too many. Suzuki’s always, for me at least, were not that well finished but offered a great engineering package. Having inspected the RE 800 up close, I have to say it does look well made and robustly finished. I think you were spot on with your ‘universal Japanese adventure’ bike’s comment. Currently this Suzuki fits in to the slot beautifully and at a very fair price.

I noticed you skirted neatly around German and European bikes in the 'value for money' section. Many years ago at work we did a test of how many hours you had to work to buy something, with the older guys saying what they used to earn and what they earned now, and what things used to cost and what they cost now... It seems most things were actually a lot more expensive years ago and not such good quality.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Chris . I didn’t deliberately skirt round the German and European prices , just reflected briefly on my personal experience when I bought my new Z650 in the early 80’s . I remember considering bikes that included the Ducati Desmo and concluding I couldn’t afford it and that the Moto Morini 3.5, which I could afford was slower than the bike I already had . Great bike, the basics are good, but it needs a sub frame added to be able to add a skid plate, it also needs crash bars and a centre stand and also cruise control even as an option, the usb near the dash and the under seat charging point should be fitted as standard, there is no need for the quick shifter, a centre stand as standard would make much more sense but less money for Suzuki I suppose. The Higher the number the mode , the more quickly traction control is engaged . Which is what I saying in this video as well ? . @ioandragulescu6063 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelmam hmm, so all this time I misunderstood how the TC indicator works. I thought that when the TC indicator blinks it means the wheel is slipping and THEN TC intervenes, so more blinking would mean more slipping thus when you were saying in the video that it blinks like a Christmas tree, for me it ment LESS intervention :) But reading carefully what you said and the manual I got it now. The TC blinks when the system intervenes to prevent slipping and thus loss of tractions so obviously, a higher TC level will lead to more blinking because the system intervenes more (not that the wheel is slipping more). At least I was using it correctly and not riding with an improper setting of the TC for the road conditions... that would have been bad. Tnx for making me understand properly how it works :)

Must get a test ride on one, to see what's it like compared to the Transalp Your thoughts Michael?
@michaelmam Жыл бұрын
I haven’t had long enough on a Transalp to make a considered comment . The obvious differences are the power and torque . The Honda is powerful and likes its revs . The Suzuki engine has more torque and feels less busy . Suzuki gearbox is very good …

Greetings from the USA! State of Vermont specifically. Marvelous video sir 👍My last bike was an '01 SV650, and I haven't been on a bike since I sold it almost 12 years ago. I quite liked the rideability and character of the 650, but with the difference in MSRP being only $700 USD here ($9,199 vs $9,899), would you say the 800RE is a better buy than the 650RE? I've only sat on the 650, and while it initially felt a little wide at the hips, it felt like something I could get used to; I'm 5'9 and weight about 170lbs.

Firstly , thank you for watching and taking the time to comment . I am a passionate motorcyclist rather than an “expert” and my opinions are no more or less valid than anyone else’s. I own a 650 XT and really like it . Great bikes . If I was buying a replacement for it and went Suzuki , personally I would go for the 800 RE . The engine and gearbox are so well matched and the 10hp more , noticeable . Just a personal view though . Both are really good bikes 👍

It wasn’t really intended as a comparison .. as you rightly point out . I make more comparisons on the 800 DE video if you are interested ? The DE has genuine off capability whilst the RE and old 650 are , in my opinion, road bikes that you do a dirt track/light trail on . I have also made a video on the XT 650 .. hope they help .

@@michaelmam I own a gen 1 VStrom 650 so am very familiar with them and yes I have seen your 650 review. No I’m not interested in the DE, the RE is more me for this size and weight category. Ideally I'd buy a BMW 900GS(yellow/red subframe one),but it's too tall and expensive, so i was looking at this and evolving it over time. That seat needs to go, a Hessler/Trail de Couvert flat one...McCruise are working on the C/C(it'll fit all 4 models probably?). Accessories are starting to appear, decent sumpguards,crash bars, lighter racks,etc! I reckon i can get that under 200kg dry,quite easily, with what's already available, Hessler is running a fully sorted DE at 226kg with 14kg of fuel on board! Should dent Tracer7 sales!

THAT bike could be trimmed to an amasing 170kg.. that.. would be a big seller then.. 🙏🇳🇿🇳🇿nz

Personally I think , certainly in the showrooms here in the UK , the big VStrom was running out of steam .
