Great song. This is an autobiographical hit single from 1966 telling the story of how the group was formed & its early years. The Mamas & the Papas were a great folk rock group in the 60's. They were known for their smooth harmonies. They had lots of great hits such as "Dedicated To The One I Love", "Twelve Thirty", "Words Of Love", "Dancing In The Street", "Look Through My Window", "Safe In My Garden", "I Saw Her Again" etc. Mama Cass Elliot went solo & had a big hit with "Dream A Little Dream Of Me".

The Mugwumps were an early group (not famous) that included Cass & Denny, as well as Zal Yanovsky & John Sebastian who later formed the popular Lovin' Spoonful.
@vickielewallen3799Ай бұрын
Theyre singing about how several groups formed, broke up, changed members, and eventually became the Lovin' Spoonful, Mamas and Papas, etc. McGuire (McGuinn and McGuire) is Barry McGuire who sang Eve of Destruction, "Sebastian" is John Sebastian who went on to form the Lovin' Spoonful. ("Mitchie" was Michelle Phillips' nickname). Eventually they all found their way, and formed the successful groups we grew up with or know today.

@@vickielewallen3799mugwumps were a late 1800's early 1900's political movement against corruption. Started out as a group of Republicans against Blaine's candidacy in the 1890's seeing him as being corrupt. They eventually died out merging into either the Republican and democratic parties. Folk group wise they were a group with two future mama and papas members and 2 future loving spoonful members

John Phillips was a heck of a songwriter. He wrote hits for others too. He gave 'Are You Going to San Francisco' to Scott McKenzie. It became an anthem of the hippie generation. John helped to organize the Monterey Pop Festival that introduced Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin to the American audience. His later life was turbulent. The history of this group is full of intrigue and talent, a precursor to Fleetwood Mac in that regard. Michelle Phillips was married to John but had a fling with Denny, the male lead singer, and (perhaps) a guy in another group. John kicked her out of the band but brought her back later. John wrote the music for the group and was the leader. Mama Cass had a crush on Denny to add more intrigue.

"Californication" is Red Hot Chili Peppers. Ever seen the 1973 movie American Graffiti? The dude in the furry hat was messed up. Take note how in the final verse everybody else is getting fat except Mama Cass. Sebastian, ie., John Sebastian, was a founder of The Lovin' Spoonful. He wrote the song "Daydream" which topped the charts in 1966. McGuinn and McGuire are Roger McGuinn of the Byrds with their hit "Eight Miles High" and Barry McGuire of the New Christy Minstrels who enjoyed a hit with "Eve of Destruction".

This review fit nicely with two others you did this evening. "Dirty Laundry-" would fit right in with the gossip and hurt this group put themselves through. Then in the Beach Boys review, you aked what was so great about California? California in the 50/60's was a magnet for aspiring artists. Laurel Canyon in particular had many incredible talents living in close proximity in the neighborhood - Jim Morrison, David Crosby w/Joni Mithchell, Steven Stills w/Judy Collins, Bob Dylan (I think), Jackson Browne and others I can't remember. Queen of them all was Cass Elliot. They were all friends, partied and created music. There are several documentaries on the Laurel Canyon musicians on YT - very interesting time and place. Damn, the 60's were so special.

The studio version is a bit better as this one does cut it a bit short. John Phillips never seemed to miss a chance to make a dig or two at Cass.
