The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I tell ya, there is something going on in these songs that makes me think there was something else going on in that era that is almost supernatural. @@richieboy6825 I think it was just a different time, society was different then, ppl. had more expectations than we seem to these days, everything seems so negative nowadays. Denny and Cass bless them, were in love long before they knew it I think and when Denny finally realizes it he has already said no too often to go back on it, did Cass's size have s/thing to do with it we'll never know , but I believe Denny never wanted to hurt her. I often wonder how things might have turned out if they had gotten together, could it have saved Cass? who knows but that is a heavy thing to put onto Denny also, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. . . Why does salt supposedly make everything more palatable? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@johnzuijdveld9585 even if he had said no a bunch of times, it seems like the way he is acting in this video is still giving her the impression that there is something there. That said, I know that I would be highly confused if a guy rejected me many times, yet still seemed to have feelings for me. My understanding is at some point Denny admitted to Cass that he did like her but that he couldn't get past her being overweight, so that might explain his conflicting behavior.

@@wrestlerx8494 They were 'friends' from the start, they first met in another band before they joined Mamas' and the Papas' They liked each other and in the only way they could they did care/love each other, but it didn't go anywhere. Or did it? There were rumors that she was pregnant with Deny's baby. I saw a video where Denny regrets not taking his relationship with Cass more seriously, maybe he thought that that might have changed the outcome for Cass. It's all very sad, maybe they will someday make a movie based on this.

If I remember correctly, I think Cass had a crush on Denny...Denny slept with Michelle...and John (as you can tell in his face in this video) was depressed. @@groovymovie84 Yep, and the 'crush' was there before they broke from their previous band. Deny was brought into the now 'New Journeymen' while Cass languished I think? But he did NOT forget Cass and her talent and eventually persuaded John and Michelle to meet her, John didn't like Cass but basically was outvoted.. . . Then BAMN! 🎆 ✨ 🎆 ✨ The magic happened! they had a complete harmonic sound that rivaled the Vienna Boys Choir 🤣, but the sound was bold, new, modern, it was about freedom, happiness, love for all, the joy of living. . . Funny they sang like hippies but apart from Cass they danced like 'Mods' . . . quite reserved. I don't know why Denny and Cass never hooked up, I know later Denny has said he regretted not allowing h/self to get involved with Cass . . .she craved it and it may have saved her BUT that is NOT a burden one can put on Denny, the chemistry was there but the appetite for risk was not. To Denny's' credit one has to note that MANY men would've used Cass for sex, and she knew this., so she loved him more. 😭 . . . now? does size matter? . . . Maybe . . sigh!

@jamesferris4573
@jamesferris4573 3 жыл бұрын
@@whoopsie890 I lived through those years and things were different to some degree. People have always been people, no matter how far you go back in time. Some that were sexual perverts were no different in the 50's, 60's, 70's, or any time. I grew up in the late 50's and early 60's. There was the same types of people as now that hasn't changed. The sexual revolution and "free love" was more a male thing to get all the sex whenever and from whoever they wanted. I am not saying some girls didn't take part, but most of the girls I knew were no different than now and just wanted one reliable guy. I don't think there was anymore actual drug use in the 60's than in the 40' s, 50's, or 70's and later. There was more public use of pot, and in 1967 with the start of the hippies in Haight- Ashbury in San Francisco the open use of LSD to get more connected to God. Until then people had drug problems, or habits but it wasn't out in the open. I believe the generation of the 60's was more vocal and wanted change and therefore drew attention to things that already existed. I do agree that many experimented with drugs and sex during this time, but overall I would go back in a second. It is true there are more people now who are divided because of political affiliations and many are angry and own assault style rifles with large capacity magazines and drums. People on both sides have been trained to see other Americans that don't see eye to eye with them as the enemy and give them no mercy. I remember preachers in the late 50's and early 60's pounding their fists on their pulpits and saying rock and roll music is from the devil and would destroy this country. I believe music is universal and can speak to the heart and soul. If this country is destroyed it will be from inside and this country. And her own citizens will destroy her. Please stay safe everyone.

I remember hearing this song and it wasn't till after I read 'Helter Skelter' that I felt the song was a fore-shadowing of bad things to come to a particular canyon in LA. The murders occurred around 12:30am, the killers were young girls and "sounds" bounced in all directions...neighbors recalled that they heard screams and gunshots but couldn't tell from which way they were coming from...fragmented. Just eerie. The song becomes very deep.

As a longtime fan of the Ms&Ps, I've always been impressed by Joe Osborn's bass playing. Here it's just tremendous. Using a pick, he gets a kind of frenetic fluttering in the verse, playing double time to the beat. Then on the chorus, he digs in deep and powerful. Like most of the Wrecking Crew, he was invisible to the more casual fans...but the stars knew the musicians who made them sound great. (Which is taking nothing away from the Ms&Ps magnificent vocal prowess or John Phillips & Lou Adler's inventive arrangements.)
