Considering that the mansion is supposed to be in the swamps of Louisiana, it makes a bit of sense that he's a zombie. Louisiana is not only known for their food, but for ghosts and magic. Louisiana has legends of zombies being people brought back to life by means of witchcraft"

Actually there was narration for a time after the endless hallway, past the coffin, through the corridor of doors, and past Madame Leota's seance circle. Why it was removed, I'm not sure. But I have a theory: Following the lead of Phantom Manor, I feel that Disneyland (not to mention Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland) eliminated the narration to let the effects speak for themselves, for people who don't speak English (or in Tokyo's case, Japanese).
