*THE LEGEND OF EDELWEISS* The flower of edelweiss only grew on the highest mountains in Germany. Legend had it among the German Wehrmacht that any soldier that took the time to climb a mountain and pluck an edelweiss flower and pin it to his lapel would not be killed for that day. For some time...the meaning of many German soldiers found dead with this flower pined to them alluded the allies. Why was this same flower found pinned to so many dead German soldiers, yet could only be found high up on mountain slopes. It wasnt until after the war that the returning German soldiers told of the legend of the edelweiss and the story became known. There are other stories concerning its origin.....but I think this is the most stirring.
@klatschkopp1142

It could also be referring to the "Edelweißpiraten", a underground resistance group of young people in the 3rd reich that mainly operated in North Rhine Westphalia (mainly in Cologne)

@@fanta4897 Considering that The Man In The High Castle contains a resistance against the Nazis it really isn't that far away. The "Edelweisspiraten" are a big topic and you even learn about them in german schools. Also the legend about the edelweiss under german soliders was mostly under the "gebirgsjäger", the mountain troopers.
@fanta4897
@fanta4897 5 жыл бұрын
@@klatschkopp1142 When it comes to legend about Edelweiss coming from Gebirsjäger... I know that it was spread among them (understandeable considering they were the only one who normally could have access to it), however I'm not sure about the origin and I'd assume that it was much older (again: it's a legend, that implies it's relatively old, and also there was a possibility of a fight even before WWII or possibly even before formation of Gebirsjägers themselves, so there is definitelly a possibility that someone could come up with that before WWII) and therefore more known (theoretically, normally it would be known, but Germany's side in WWII is in a... special position, demonised after defeat like no other in history). I'm not going to argue about from what this song draws the inspiration though, it could be both ways, your theory is just as likely to be right as it is likely to be wrong I think.
@fanta4897
@fanta4897 5 жыл бұрын
@@klatschkopp1142 Nvm just found that the song comes from Sound of Music which apperantly takes place in 1938, so either the group you talk about had to exist for long enough that there would be song about it in the 1938 (in the movie). Or the context is as previously thought: about the legend of Edelweiss... or it's film which didn't really thought everything through and the context is as you said.

I'm German and I know my native tongue (mostly ... and some of it's dialects). It took me the whole 1st season to question, what I was thinking to hear in the opening: 'Himmelreich' ... I thought. No it wasn't. It was 'Edelweiss'. But the 'ss' in 'Edelweiss' sounds like 'sh', like in 'shampoo'. In German spoken language a double 's' is always spoken very sharp. Even more 'hissing' than in 'school' or 'subway'.

This is a creepy, ghost-story-like, version of the original song. Sounds very morbid, like a horror-romance movie.

Is that the proper way (like it was meant to be)? "Edelweiss" is a showtune that was written by two Americans for The Sound of Music. It's not like this is an Austrian folk song that was referenced in that show.

A. It was never a German nor Austrian song to begin with B. Those "proper lyrics" don't match the original melody nor the show's omitted version. The words are way too long.
