Athos (John Malkovich) threatens Louis (Leonardo DiCaprio) which leads D'Artagnan (Gabriel Byrne) to threaten Phillipe (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is recaptured.

It's really amazing how one actor can portray two completely different characters and master both personalities. Leonardo DiCaprio plays both Philippe and Louis, yet he looks very different as each, down to the looks in their eyes. Simply amazing 👏

it’s actually two of the same type of feeling, because d’artagnan was never actually fighting for his king, he was always fighting and protecting his son. he knew he was his son, but used his immeasurable loyalty and honour as excuses to mask his true reasons.

@@monicad99 100% Exactly right. D’artagnan had not qualms here in killing Phillipe, if Louis was safe. The scene afterwards he also would not have had a problem for Phillipe to be executed or life imprisonment given by Louis. It was when he found out Phillipe was the actual twin brother, that D’artagnan all of a sudden cared for Philippe's well being. Yet, when Athos's son was sent to the front lines to be killed by Louis, D’artagnan did not care whatsoever and gave more excuses for Louis. D’artagnan selfishness was overwhelming in this movie, and he admitted he effectively raised Louis. I can see why now, Louis turned out the way he did, because he kept on getting away with his behavior with no accountability. A real father would have disciplined his son, instead of letting him have entitlement issues and continue the boorish and criminal behavior.

So do you think it somehow acknowledges Aramis' pragmatism? He didn't love Philippe like Athos did, for him it was a political ploy. He was also consistently shown throughout the movie as someone who believes in "cold Justice" and is very rarely cordial, rather pragmatic and straight to the point (albeit secretive). I like this explanation, adds another layer to the viewing experience.

If you are a fan of the books then this scene weighs on your emotions a ton. You feel heartbroken at what has happened to the Musketeers but the ending of this film is more heartbreaking if you know the characters backstories.

It is mostly the eyes and the demeanour that you can tell the difference between Louis and Philippe. But also in their tone of voice - the way Louis gives or more often shouts orders at everyone. You can tell he's familiar with it, that he's been giving orders his whole life and has talked down to other people his whole life. He expects and demands to be obeyed and gives his orders in a way that shows that he expects to be obeyed - no, that he knows he will obeyed. You can as good as hear him say things like "Did I stutter?", "I won't repeat myself", "Don't make me repeat myself", "Unblock your ears and get on with it!" or "Now you idiot!"

They destroyed it themselves because D'Artagnan was loyal to his king and didn't agree with the others' plan and Athos became “blind” because of his son's death. But you can still see D'Artagnan's pain in his face on this scene. He was caring and love his old friends despite the different paths they took
