This was a *criminally* underrated film. Leonardo gave a terrific performance, better than so many people back in '98 gave him credit for. All so many critics focused on was the fact that he did not have an 'accurate' accent, but aside from Anne Parillaud and Gérard Depardieu, none of the actors really had any kind of French accent. Leo's performance was very very good because his characters were entirely distinct. You knew the moment Philippe OR King Louis came onscreen without him saying a word, by just looking in his eyes. What the man did with his eyes in this film was truly special. It was a fantastic double-role coming off of the whirlwind that was "Titanic" and totally different from Jack Dawson.

Well technically if everyone had a French Accent, would people be able to understand them? Besides in France at that time there were many accents throughout the country, so the different accents in the film can be a representation of that.

Philippe was obviously daring Louis to send him back to the prison when he begged him not to after begging to be killed first. He clearly knew him too well than he thought and could see that's where he'd rather him die in the mask - and that the Musketeers would come for him there. Pretty clever on his part to keep his innocence on as a mask of his true intentions to set Louis and wait for the Musketeers to get him.

I feel like this was one of Leo Dicaprio's roles that showcased his talent the best. Because even though he played both Louis and Phillipe, you could always tell who Louis and who Phillipe was throughout the movie because Leo Dicaprio had the ice cold, narcissistic look on his face for Louis and the sweet, shy, innocent look for Phillipe. Played by the same person, but always looked completely different
@Sisyphus277 жыл бұрын
Why do you think Louis said that their mother's love had meant nothing to either of them? Because Louis was selfish and spoiled rotten, and because he thought Philippe would only have hatred for their mother on account of his imprisonment?
@jw17312 жыл бұрын
that's a good and thought-provoking question. I think Louis is the sort of psychopath that actually understands the idea of empathy and the pain endured by others, but he's just so self-serving it becomes irrelevant. He knows that Phillipe has a right to be upset at their mother for being complicit in his imprisonment and torture, even though he himself was the perpetrator of it. So for a brief moment he uses Phillippe's grievance as ammunition to roast his mother; but when Phillipe acts like a bigger and more benevolent person than he is, ashamed and frustrated knowing that his attack on his mother's character was thwarted, he assaults Phillippe. As to why Louis would have the nerve to criticize his mother for not standing up to an atrocity he himself was responsible for, I'd say it's a typical case of cognitive dissonance. In order to discredit someone in a moment, he doesn't realize or care if it becomes a self-own. Of course, he's the king and doesn't have to make sense; it's only those under him who would suffer for his mistake, like the minister who was executed for distributing rotten food like Louis ordered. Another possibility is: Phillippe does harbor some resentment toward his mother for her complicity, or maybe after a few years as being pampered and fawned over as the king he'll become spoiled enough to come around and hate her for that. See, in that moment he needed all the allies he could get, and by behaving cartoonishly honorable he would further win his mother and D'artagnan over. Being imprisoned and tormented for years, Phillippe must've accumulated the endurance for suffering and learned how to be obsequious and non-threatening so as to survive. So even if he resented his mother in that moment, the last thing he would do is show it. In fact, his request to be put to death instead of being locked away in his mask may very well have been reverse psychology to get Louis to keep him alive, because then there's a chance the three musketeers could rescue him. But ultimately, despite his scheming nature, he still has a honorable and gentle nature which Louis does not.

To everyone who wonders why this film got slated by some on release: Leo had just had the biggest hit of all time (Titanic) and those who wanted a backlash couldn't wait to pick on his next film. It's true that he was in the company of some all time legends here...Byrne, Malkovich and Irons, plus Depardieu before his current controversies...so it was easy for critics to say he'd bitten off more than he could chew by appearing opposite them. Readers would have found the reviews believeable before they saw the film for themselves. In truth, DiCaprio did as well opposite that level of talent as ANY star in his late teens/early 20s could have hoped to.

Leo used to be so beautiful. A truly beautiful face. I think he's glad he "lost it," though. When Philippe begged to be executed, I thought it was super unfair for Louis to decide to send Philippe back to the prison and then have them mask placed back onto his face

Great movie. Based on true history by the way. Leonardo DiCaprio is an INCREDIBLE actor making 2 performances if twin brothers.

love this movie...I'm not saying it needs a remake but if it had one the sprouse brothers would perfect for Louis and Philippe

Very Underrated film. It’s my first introduction to Dicaprio who is one of my favourite actors so it’s quite sentimental!

Dicaprio playing two people in the same room is fantastic editing

Doubtful. He would probably see the deviations from his stories as unnecessary.

I've always felt awkward throughout the movie because of how Leo is so much more beautiful than all the women.
