OG version didnt have the entire town hostages and chained and forced to laugh at his crew's stage, didnt put all 3 of the mcs to sleep and in a box, didnt almost drown Luffy, didnt destroy THE WHOLE TOWN, didnt put Luffy to sleep TWICE, didnt use a kid as a hostage.... Buggy's introduction in OPLA is better.

@animagamer2 my theory is that Oda had no sense of scale for the series 30 years from when he started it and decided it would make for some great drama and character profiling. Why on earth would he lose his arm *on purpose*? Luffy was already talking about becoming a pirate, and he had already relayed to Shanks his - so far, unrevealed - dream that he coincidentally shares with Roger. Why would he do something stupid like lose an arm on purpose? Did Shanks also set Luffy up to get kidnapped by Higuma and to have him almost get devoured by the lord of the coast as well? That's ridiculous.

The best part about Buggy is that a lot of his chunks are practical effects. They made like life-like models of things like his head, hands, and feet, the more important detailed bits. I love how so much of this show was practical effects that would've been CGI if this was some other company (glaring over at Disney using AI actors and stock-footage to fill crowds and it being blatantly obvious, and not paying for using these actors likenesses) because all those people who do all this real-life stuff are union whereas CGI is not. There's actual costumes, makeup, prosthetics, actual sets, and like there's some CGI where it's needed to fill in the gaps but it still looks good. The ships are real in actual water, the snails are animatronics, the fish-men are costumes and makeup, Mihawk's sword is real and he really swings that slab of metal (probably aluminum since aluminum is a third of the weight of steel; still probably pretty heavy) around with ease, the stunts are done in harnesses like with old kung-fu movies, the majority of the sets are not a green-screen or sound-stage, etc.

I think the whole point of Shanks losing his arm, was for the idea that after losing it, he was still able to become such a strong pirate. Losing that arm was only a minor set back, though he bounced back so spectacularly.

I call it the mad Max fury road effect. Basically this show (like mad max) says "everything in this show is absurd/stupid/silly/childish but everyone in universe is taking it super seriously. And you, the audience are gonna sit there and like it!" It's a great approach and I think live action adaptations of anime/video games/comics/etc need to embrace it the silly

I heard a good comparison between this show and Bebop live action. This show embraces the goofiness of the source material but never disparage or demean it. There's very little "MCU quip" that makes fun of how dumb certain things are. The snail phones, the weird costumes, the dumb super powers, the extremely bright hair colors, etc are all played straight. Characters rarely stop in the show to call attention to how weird they are, and when they do, it's a proper setup with a fun payoff (like the whole "calling out your attack name" thing). Because the show takes its silly world and characters seriously, the audience, while might be weirded out at first, also eventually immerse themselves into this wacky, fantasy world and take it seriously On the other hand, Bebop's adaptation seems to be almost embarrassed by its original source material.

So there’s two reasons why the goofiness works so well and doesn’t feel over done. Firstly, Luffy’s character sets the tone from the start so it allows us to broaden our ability to accept the goofiness. Secondly, every character in this show takes all the silly stuff seriously. The comedy is from natural interactions with each other and isn’t coming from something that feels forced for cheap laughs. (Looking at you Marvel & DC). So because of this, we’re able to actually embrace the goofiness and accept that it’s the norm in this world. It’s nothing new, but it’s honestly genius. This series takes itself more seriously than the crap Disney and Warner are spewing out.

At first I didn’t really like this creepy, tough Garp. But it's all so interconnected. The Marines here in the series look like a structure that is actually waging a fierce war with hordes of sadists, psychopaths, monsters who call themselves pirates. And Buggy is simply the decoration of this series. He looks and feels even better than the original.

That's not really good justification for him loosing an arm. The real reason is that it was written a long time before the full story of one piece was planned out and it's just one of the logical holes that comes from such a long story. It was confirmed that at this time Shank's bounty was over a billion, so imagine if Katakuri was there instead and lost an arm to a creature that chapter 1 Luffy beat in a single punch, it just doesn't make sense anyway you try to frame it.

It's one of those anime tropes where there's collateral damage whenever someone has to defend someone weak when if it was a 1v1 from the go, it would have gone different.

Thing about Shanks losing his arm, is not too different from Ace and Whitebeard and any of the central characters taking major damage: All of them do so when they are protecting someone they love. They will walk off a cannonball to the face, but they start focusing on someone threatening their loved ones, and you cn walk up to them and stab them in the chest.

Originally, shanks wasn't meant to lose his arm, but oda was told prior to the release of one piece. While great, it needed something impactul to kinda set the tone and the stakes of the world and so shanks sacrificed an arm for luffy. If you read the manga, you'll see that Shanks had is arm bit off to avoid that Luffy was eaten and the first time he starred at the Lord of the Coast he used Haki, it wasn't a 3-step scene like in the Live Action.

The real reason Shanks let the Lord of the Cost take his arm: in irl, Oda's editor said that the story wasn't very emotional, so he made Shanks lose his arm, he wasn't supposed to. *In-universe* is later explained during the talk with Whitebeard that Shanks deliberately lost his arm because he was "betting on the new era/generation", meaning he did with the soul purpose of making SURE Luffy was going to become a pirate after he left. This is the reason.
