Every culture has expectations for men and women about their roles at home and in society, but the line between cultural practices and religious duty isn’t always clear. The role of men is often reduced to being the financial provider for the home, but does this fully capture their responsibilities?
Are the roles of men and women in the home interchangeable, or are there distinct Islamic expectations for each? How can men balance these responsibilities to become ideal fathers and husbands?
In this episode, host Mohamad Zaoud talks to Sh. Mohammad Elshinawy, co-author of the Yaqeen Institute paper “Gender Uniqueness in Islam and the Significance of Fatherhood.” Read it here: yqn.io/i8x

This discussion has really benefited me and expanded my understanding, jazakum Allah khair. The topic of gender roles can be particularly difficult for Muslims living in the West to conceptualize properly, especially when the cultural norms even in Muslim countries so often do an awful job of representing our deen. My friends and family and I have really come to admire this shaikh's approach and his work, may Allah swt continue to protect, guide, and bless him in his efforts. It's amazing how much depth of insight is packed into every little comment he makes, masha'Allah. And the host was gracious as always and asked crucial questions and shared enlightening examples to elevate the discussion and draw so much wisdom out of his guest, alhamdulillah.

Coming from south east Asia in my culture women’s role is to be obedient blindly , man is the king of the house and has to be served unconditionally , if you as women question or comes up with different ideas and views it’s viewed at being liberal and I would say viewed as also being bad muslimah , too westernized the culture seems to thrive on closing the mind of women and now next generation the pendulum has moved to other extreme and this has led to broken marriages and broken families when I moved to Middle East after marriage I saw different power dynamic I thought these Arab women are assertive and now I live in west and have acces to these qualified acholars I have learned a different view of of Islam that I find very empowering and liberating now I carry less guilt and do not feel insufficient and not good enough a muslimah , izakAllah khair for the amazing podcast please keep up good work Allah SWT bless you all

Asean here too! I feel like the scholars in my country did not really stress that we should not be obedient to our husband if they were not righteous and fair. It's really disappointing and sad.

Really enjoyed this! It's very relatable and once again shows how down-to-earth and practical Islam is. I wish non-Muslims would listen to this as well.

There is a disproportionate amount of content on the role of women. As the sheikh said, more needs to be said for bearded men given their enormous responsibilities. I hope he follows up with a women's version in this same tone. MashAllah the sheikh has a very gentle tone. May Allah protect him...ameen.

May Allah bless you sis. Today the discussions and demands are often about. "What do i get", "what are the rights owed to me", hardly ever do we see concern of the rights we owe to others. Its funny isnt it, just think.... if we all had concern, focused and exhausted our efforts to fulfill the others rights then by default our rights are fulfilled. We are accountable for our actions but yet we focus on what the other is accountable for. Its refreshing to see your approach and your request.

Only very few Islamic scholars talk about women rights like this. All you hear is the woman has be obedient and please the husband no matter what or else Allah and the prophet curse her, she would never smell the fragrance of janna. Woman who dies while her husband is not please with her goes straight to hell. The negatives/curses of the woman goes on and on. Subhanallah! On equal distribution of family responsibilities, the wife works full time and share 50% of every financial expense or else there would be no peace in the house. But the original prescribed responsibilities of the woman remains the same; she cooks and serve everybody, does everyone’s laundry, cleans, drop the kids and picks them up, do their homework, etc. And upon everything, the man sees himself as the leader, the controller and authoritarian who deserves full respect. It’s very difficult for me as a wife to obey and give full respect to such a man. If you wants to be respected as a man, provide for your family financially as prescribed by Islam. Feed and cloth them according to your means, provide a roof over their head and stop fighting with your wives to pay portion of the finances or expect to loose that respect.

Absolutely ukhti, Subhan'Allah. If these particular men truly studied our deen and the beautiful example our beloved nabi Salalahi Alayhi wa Salaam, they would not be so harsh in judgement of us women. May Allah guide us all to softness in heart and understanding, Aameen.

In the Quran and hadiths, it is recommended that Hubby and their wife to participate in Shura (Arabic: شُورَىٰ, romanized: shūrā, lit. 'consultation') can for example take the form of a council or a referendum. The Quran encourages Muslims to decide their affairs in consultation with each other.

but one thing, the wife has to acknowledge the man's rights and vice versa, just like when traveling -- imagine you choose an amir for safar and everyone is like 'you don't have to rub i t in my face all the time that you are amir".

Unfortunately, the wrong amir will annoy the group. And then the group just might remove him and appoint a new amir! 😅 Simple.
