Recorded on April 24, 2023.
Prior to spring 2020, Jay Bhattacharya was a well-respected but little-known epidemiologist and Stanford Medical School professor. But when the COVID pandemic broke out that March, Dr. Bhattacharya was thrust into a leadership role as coauthor of the groundbreaking Santa Clara Study, one of the first comprehensive looks at how the disease spread and impacted populations, and as one of the principals behind the Great Barrington Declaration, one of the first public declarations questioning the lockdown policies then being instituted worldwide. His public interrogation of these policies made him a target of public health officials in the US and abroad-including Dr. Anthony Fauci of the CDC and Dr. Francis Collins at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC-and placed him in a media spotlight. In this interview, Dr. Bhattacharya reflects on those battles, what we learned, and how we might better manage future pandemics.

That would only dissuade non-heroes, i.e. just about every realistic person, to be afraid to speak up. Speaking up isn't heroic unless you can be harmed for simply doing it. Jay B. is relatively wealthy, relatively well-liked, and generally highly-regarded. He's a good man for sure, but don't call him a "hero".

Same here. Nobody is talking about the millions of citizens who were screaming into a black hole about this back in summer of 2020. Those of us who knew were treated horribly for speaking out and questioning things. I was yelled at by a woman at the grocery store for walking the wrong direction down the aisle. I was screamed at by a “hall monitor” at the Mayo Clinic for not putting my mask on fast enough. My own family called me a conspiracy theorist. Called me selfish or stupid. Those of us who have been gaslit now have ZERO trust in doctors or vaccines, much less any governing agency or authority. What about us? An apology is only the beginning and the bare minimum. There needs to be a larger effort to acknowledge and repair the damage done to the millions of people who refused to believe the BS and refused to comply. Until then- my heart has been hardened and I’m not sure I will ever forgive or fully trust anything again.

Lockdown was also so inhumane to those who were dying and their loved ones weren't allowed to give their last hugs and goodbyes. Just goes against all normal brain function. How did people even go along with this!?? How could nurses and doctors actually have the conscience to not allow them in?? This is something that will scar people for a long time. Those loved ones are already gone. Can't hug them goodbye anymore.

Another great guest would be RFK jr if US government wants to set an example to the world people should consider him as the next president. He, also a high standrad, humble human with much life experience, compassion, intelligence and integrity, may be full swing on certain subjects, but he knows that and is open to persuasion if the argument is powerfully convincing and backed by facts. Not something to be said of the last 50yrs of US presidents. Seeing US gov currently bullies the world, an integral US leader would mean more world peace, economic stability, human equality and seeing he is a balanced environmentalist, planetary health.

The pairing of an unassuming manner with surpassing intelligence, reason, and perspective is a rare one among public figures. A great interview and cast some light on the process that led to the decisions made , this was of course no accident either the thing itself or the response to it . Deliberate intent lies at the heart of this whole situation, a concerted effort to disrupt and undermine our existence and not forgetting aided and abetted by a complicit media . Obviously the long term effects will linger on for years , as will the effort to give some accountability . Judging by the age of many involved , they will probably be not around to give full account. In the final analysis it has to come down to who were ultimately responsible . And even more importantly WHY

Common sense and responsibility of the facts were stifled by those that had the power to control the narrative. I'm outraged by the apathetic response by the citizenry and those who DID know better, bow to the government edicts, directed by those with something to gain.

May God bless you, Dr. Jay. Throughout the lockdown your explanations helped me understand the scope of the pandemic. I taught high school from home over Zoom and am part of the laptop class. I saw my students' suffering through Zoom and my own daughter suffered too. Even today, too many of my students suffer a lack of hope and motivation, they are socially immature, and have increased anxiety and depression. This lockdown continues to harm our children. "The Science is settled" is an absolute lie.

I would value the opportunity to buy Dr. Bhattacharya a lunch/dinner (for the ability to speak with him for 20 to 30 minutes) more than any other person on Earth. Peter Robinson is a close 2nd.

The Mach 2020 New England Journal of Medicine had a article by Fauci in which he said COVID would be only a typical bad flu year, no worse. I read the article, then watched Fauci on TV spin a very different tale. And felt fear -- but not of COVID.

Jay looks a lot thinner. Hope he is healthy. Jay was the most reasonable person. And when he was attached you knew that the country had gone rogue. And we no longer had any control of our government. And our government had no credibility any more.

Shutting down small businesses in America. My brother-in-law, CEO of an Engineering firm , received a check for the firm at the tune of $3 million for COVID. He called to refuse this hideous donation and expressed that the firm does not need it, please take this back. No! It was the answer and he was informed that he has to take the money and that refusal is not allowed So, he opened another bank account to house the money where it sits to this day untouched.

I would rather be in trouble for being RIGHT... than be held laudable for being destructive as they all have. They should be full of shame. Crawl off and don't come back. The aftermath is only starting. And it's their fault....never to be trusted again. They broke it.

Powerful, and at times, dumbfounding. I was on a long drive while listening to this, and I almost had to pull over, just to process the profound implications of some of the things Dr Bhattacharya was sharing. So much I could say.....but I'll keep it limited to, "I sincerely hope we actually learn from this, actually allow vigorous and rigorous scientific conversations, and take an objective look at real data in preparation for the next pandemic. Unfortunately, my hopes are not very high.

I found educated new immigrants to be more likely on the conservative side. I am one of them. We have truly seen multiple worlds. Not only seeing them, but living in them. As well educated people we could make a good living anywhere, but we decided to come to America.

One lesson to ponder from the Australian experience is that the more stringent your lockdown policies, the more likely the politicians are to get re-elected. For example, Western Australia become its own hermit kingdom for years on end, and the WA Premier was re-elected with a massive majority. Victoria had some of the longest, most stringently policed lockdowns in the world - outside of perhaps certain regions in China - and the Victorian Premier was also re-elected with no end in sight to his tenure. These re-elections are proof positive that “follow the science” may not be as important to political leaders as “voters are more risk adverse than you can ever imagine”.
