I have many favorites, but this just might be my most favorite episode - They (the creators of Escape) captured the story perfectly, which is possibly the greatest adventure story ever! Thanks as always for listening - Charlie

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered I enjoy listening to old style radio programs. As a young child it was my only entertainment at night or when sick. I was 12 years old before we got a used tv. I still listened to an old tube radio at night after laying down right through high school. Since 1973 when i became disabled and in a wheelchair it is still a nightly enjoyment on KZbin. No strain on the eyes is nice! Thank you for your channell.

@@larrygarrett724 Many listeners are disabled (as am I, something I don't advertise, but not in a chair) I was born just a couple of years too late for radio dramas, so I'm definitely from the early TV generation. We got a whole TWO channels while I was growing up! Thanks, as always.

Did John Dehner play the part of Rudyard Kipling in the first ESCAPE episode as the credits at the end of that episode state that Herbert Rawlinson played the part of Rudyard Kipling. The voice in both versions sounds like John Dehner to me. Raymond Lawrence played the part of Peachy Carnahan in the first version and was excellent with his very unique and authentic accent. To me better than the second version. Not sure who played that part in the second version, but it may have been Eric Snowden. He spoke much faster and not as well done as the Raymond Lawrence version in the 1st episode. Sometimes these radio shows are not always clear as to who played certain parts as only just the names may be listed which is the case with these 2 versions. The ticking of the clock is a very good sound effect in both versions.

You raise a couple of good points. Both versions sound like John Dehner! Now I'll have to look into it - besides the ticking clock, the sound of Peachy dragging one leg as he leaves is incredible. Every few months, I'll come back to listen to this episode again!

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered Yes, sound does make or break a good story on radio as it is not a visual experience but rather "the Theater of the Mind". I have listened to both versions on several occasions, and the part of Rudyard Kipling in both versions sounds exactly like John Dehner, but the credits in the first episode indicate it to be Herbert Rawlinson (sp?). The ticking clock scenes in the otherwise quiet room always start out the segments held in Rudyard Kipling's office, and begin those segments which occur several times in the story as he listens to Peachy Carnahan's. When Peachy goes off into another world thinking he is either dead or another person, to bring himself back into this world and complete the story for Kipling he asks Rudyard Kipling to keep looking into his eyes, and it works. I have never known a ticking clock to be used so effectively as in this radio adaptation. I think Rudyard Kipling actually says he is sitting in his office listening to the sound of the clock. Seems in one of the versions I can actually hear the clock strike 2, but I need to listen more closely the next time to make sure. The last and ending scene where one hears Peachy Carnahan dragging his foot is also quite memorable.

@@richardmcleod5967 I've been meaning to tell you, that I had a difficult choice as to which version to upload. Escape has many stories repeated (slightly different) like "Three Skeleton Key." I uploaded the Vincent Price version because I can't imagine anyone else telling the tale. "Key" was produced by Suspense, too. A condensed version with Vincent Price (only fair sound quality ) There. Now I can get some sleep!

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered I was fortunate years back to see Vincent Price interviewed at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. He was quite fragile at the time but the magic of his personality was still there. Just glad I was able to see and hear him prior to his death. Same with Olivia de Havilland who was one of the most intelligent and amazing personalities I have ever heard interviewed. I made those trips into Los Angeles and just glad I did as these people are no longer with us any longer. I understand Peggy Webber is still alive and active in Los Angeles. I suppose she is one of the last from the Golden Age of Radio still with us. In fact, I think she is the woman screaming so loudly in the first version on ESCAPE's "The Man Who Would Be King". She was also the Mother Willis on the second episode of ESCAPE'S "A Shipment of Mute Fate" We lost most of these radio stars and Director's at fairly early ages, but she is one of the exceptions.

In the 1947 Escape episode, it's definitely Herbert Rawlinson as Kipling, with Eric Snowden as Dravot and Raymond Lawrence as Carnehan. A year later, the cast is John Dehner as Kipling, Wilms Herbert as Dravot and Ben Wright (who actually was English) as Carnehan, with Jack Kruschen as Billy Fish.
