Wilfredo Gomez was without question the greatest 122lb boxer to
ever lace up the gloves. He put together a 32 fight knock out streak and defended his championship 17 times. All of them by knockout. Wilfredo remains the most acclaimed fighter from Puerto Rico.

I’m a proud Puerto Rican and an absolute fan of Wilfredo however, one cannot deny how great Sanchez was. He was an absolute boxing machine and masterful boxer who never tired. Had he not died he could’ve been the greatest in his weight class. I will always root for Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 but also much respect to Sanchez. Rest in Peace champ.

100% correct. But also Santiago made a great point. Gomez took Sanchez lightly and Gomez's indiscretions were widely known. Something that was not mentioned in this video (or in the comments) was Gomez's problems making weight and having to run in the Las Vegas desert days before the fight AND I think the day of the weigh-in had to go to a sauna to shed water weight. Remember, back in those days weigh-ins were the day of the fight. Gomez was in no shape to face a fighter of Sanchez caliber. Sadly, Sanchez died in that horrible car accident. It would've been a great rematch. We will never know what would've come out of it. One thing is certain, Gomez was training like never before for it. He was determined to give Sanchez hell.

@@hfontanez98Sanchez always looked good against fighters that came straight at him like Gomez. But if he ever stepped in the ring with a slick fighter like the greatest featherweight in history Eusebio Pedroza he would have gotten killed long before he got into that car. Pedroza ruled that division for 8 years and had 19 title defenses. A record that will never be broken. It's time for the true boxing fans to stop overrating Sanchez, and give Pedroza his due.🥊🥊🥊👍

Fundamentally sound pressure fighters, who can also box when necessary don't come along often. Wilfredo Gomez absolutely belongs on that short list. There's no shame in losing to Salvador Sanchez, a top 10 P4P fighter all time in my book. Gomez was a great champion in his own right. Rhythm Boxing's commitment to highlight fighters who deserve more recognition than they sometimes receive is admirable. One of many reasons this channel stands alone.

And the greatest could a would a should ve was Estaban DE Jesus who was actually trained by Gregario Benetiz, Wilfredo daddy and use to spar with Wilfredo. Esteban could go head to head with a prime Duran and come out on top. That's why when Esteban was dying from Aides off dirty needles, Duran a mean hard Sob but also a true man of God, flew down to Puerto 🇵🇷 Rico and hugged an emaciated Esteban. I remember the Salvador Sanchez, Gomez fight vividly. I moved to Puerto Rico at 13 years old and when I heard about the fight I told all of my school buddies and most adults who would listen that Gomez would lose and I got SO MUCH HATE for it. Ten times more after the fight, but I had seen fights with Sanchez so it didn’t surprise me. I still think about how we’d still be praising the greatness of Sanchez if he hadn’t passed away. I also remember after the fight that a comedian from the island did a comedy skit about the fight and Wilfredo Gomez was so angered about it that he actually made that comedian apologize to him on air to the public. I still laugh so much about that. Nevertheless Wilfredo was and is the best champion to come out of Puerto Rico.

@@jameshowell6160 damn…how did I forget Wilfredo Benitez? Cheers. For me this fight is still very vivid in my mind because of how my life played out at that time. I happened to be living in Puerto Rico and didn’t know much about Wilfredo Gomez until I moved to the island. And as soon as I heard he was fighting Sanchez I knew that Gomez wasn’t going to win that one. I’d seen enough Salvador Sanchez fights to know that he was not going to lose, but to win in such a fashion…..that was a hard pill for Puerto Ricans to swallow.

@LuisSoto-ho5fw
@LuisSoto-ho5fw 9 ай бұрын
Wilfredo (at 100%) at 122 was like Inoue is now - freakish power - but coupled with tremendous boxing skill. Power isn't about your size, necessarily, but also about "displacement," in other words, how you manipulate that body weight dynamically to generate power. That didn't translate to 126 pounds for Gomez - he just didn't have the physicality that caused Sanchez to inevitable move to what was his natural weight. Had Gomez - at 100% - met Sánchez on his way up at 122, in my opinion the outcome would have been different (Gómez would have been probably too much for the still-developing Mexican). But that fight would've been so competitive that it might have propelled Sánchez to the international consciousness years before it happened.
@danielrendon8555

Remember Sanchez started at 122 and had 19 fights at that weight, I don't think 4 pounds is a big deal, just look at PAC Man he started at Fly Weight and won belts up Welterweight or Super Welterweight if I'm not mistaken.
