I used to be the guy on-call at all times - no more! I can’t take that shit for another moment and refuse to take work-related calls when not on the clock. And if anyone has issues with this, I go to my union to file a complaint.

I used to check in at night, on weekends, etc., to see if any email awaited, and I'd answer questions, do quick tasks, and so on, but for 2 reasons. First, I would do it at a time of *MY* choosing. Second, I'd apply that time towards my weekly hours. The one and only time I got questioned about that, I simply said, "No problem, I'll just never do that again.". The wheels had to click for a while, but the message got through, and I was never bothered about that again. If anyone didn't get the point, I said-without-actually-saying that I'd simply never again check in on my off-hours, so any "urgent matters" would just have to wait until the next business day when I'd get in. The benefit of having me answer a question, put a new program online, write some quick how-to or other documentation, etc., and doing it relatively immediately, far outweighed me "playing games with my hours" as it was first put to me.
