My employer does not pay overtime, nor does he asks us to do so. But on a rare occasions when they do, we have to take those hours back anytime in the near future. Also if we want to take some time off (for private reasons, which we often do) we just gotta work them off in the near future aswell. Works both ways.

@@PsRohrbaugh Taxes/payroll. Its easier/cheaper to pay someone overtime on occasion or even frequently than it is to hire a new person, onboard/train them and then potentially not need them 3 months later. Hiring comes with costs and a lot of red tape that a lot of employers will avoid until it is absolutely necessary.

@@abigailcollins8443yeah, offering to let you leave early a specific other day that week is the bare minimum. What should really happen is comp time, getting additional pto that can be used whenever in lieu of overtime, or paid out. Not related to work, but it reminds me of that one time my landlady allowed me to get my own Internet connection instead of her providing it herself (I lived in a boarding house at the time). I wasn't sharing the connection with anyone else. But, a few months later, the landlady's daughter asked if I could open the connection to everyone else. They're closing their own Internet subscription as they're pinching their pennies wherever possible. Before I could ask, she told me that she isn't gonna help me pay any percentage of the bill. So, I'm effectively doing their job _on my dime_ and she thinks I should be happy about that. To this day, I still wonder what did she smoke to think this was a good idea.

It's not only because the manager gets paid more with a salary, it's also her being on a salary means she will get paid the same amount of money whether she's at work or not. They pay them salaries because they know sometimes they may have to work unusual hours. If there's some kind of company emergency, they can call the salary worker into work at 3:00 in the morning but they can't do that to an hourly worker without paying them additional money. So her saying it doesn't make sense for her to stay because she's on a salary is exactly the opposite.

So I’m salaried and by hour I make a lot less than the hourly workers. Mainly because the managers threaten to report us to HR if we don’t or just screaming at us for being incompetent, and in some ways it’s not worth the mental torture to disobey them but I was working about 100 h a week for three months a while back and I’m thankful to have gone down to 60. But I don’t get overtime because the company knows they’d be in financial trouble if we were hourly employees. The hourly people actually get a life and overtime pay and I’m very jealous.

I work for a large corp. You work OT, you get paid OT (union rules). If it's not approved, you still get paid, but the manager gets yelled at for requesting the OT because they were inept at getting the work out on time. Basically, if the company does not want OT, nobody works OT -- except the exempt, salaried guys (like engineering). They can be forced to do anything and fired without warning and with no rights. Companies hate unions because then they can't just stomp on people as they would prefer.

We have busy periods around the end of every summer and the first thing out of my supervisor’s mouth is “Ok, I just got the approval for OT from management; who is available to work late?” Essentially setting up from the beginning that if we stay, we get credit for the hours worked. The situation has evolved over the years from when I started, and a lot of the tedious part of the job has been automated so that we don’t have to do OT as much anymore, but at the same time my job has been upgraded since those days and I am getting paid accordingly. It just all ties into the fact that the company RESPECTED the employees’ contributions and made sure we knew that upfront.

Manager totally has a point here, why did you say yes if youre going to say no. Theyre giving you time off later in the week to make up for it, so no need for over time. If youre getting paid for every hour youre working, then there is no issue legally. If you said you dont have availability in the times youre being asked to work thats one thing, but if you told them you are available to be scheduled in those hours prior, then theres no argument. You dont pick your hours, your boss or scheduling manager does. In the real world, someone like this would never survive in a job. Not everything needs to be of mutual benefit, the mutual benefit is that youre being paid for your work. So work and shut the fuck up, or give your chair up for someone who is willing to do so. This shit doesnt fly. Its not illegal or out of place to be scheduled differently than your heart desires. If you gave me availability, I am going to schedule however I want within your availability. I'm amazed that these managers say "stay a LITTLE LATE tonight" quickly followed by "an hour or two". An hour or two is not a "little late" - a little late would be 15-20 minutes max. after usual clocking out time, but because they probably are obligated to pay an hour for that 15 minutes, they make sure to add that little bit in their request. If there is an add'l 1-2 hours worth of work someone else has to finish at the end of shift for someone else, either someone else can't manage their time and their workload effectively, there was an emergency for that employee who had to leave the work incomplete for the day and the manager doesn't want to stay late to handle it personally, or the manager can't manage the employee who just didn't get it done in a timely manner. To ask, and expect, another employee to pick up the slack without pay is not just arrogant, insulting, condescending and selfish, it is illegal.

Ah, yes, the classic lines: "I'm actually not authorized to pay overtime" and the "We're all just having to pitch in a bit more." Sadly, I'm quite sure her manager *WILL* be able to con someone else into staying under the *manager* 's terms, especially bcz she'll definitely use the guilt trip line with other workers as well. It was nice though, to see her manager backpedal after Veronika pointed out that it made more financial sense for the *manager* to stay late. 😂😂 Management *REALLY* should know by now that you don't mess with Veronika. 😂😂😂

I love how these work narcs be pulling stunts and get checked like a pro. They think that your job is your life, and not value you. They think that are your God, and God be like Covert work narcs are the worst.

This was accurate, but mild in my experience. One job required a 15min unpaid briefing ahead of shift every day with the threat of termination if you were late for it. That didn't last long as the co. got sued. Another would drop "mandatory" overtime on you around the middle of the shift. Mostly with the same threat. One found a way to not pay all the OT (usually on out of town trips).

Remember people, working outside of your paid hours (i.e. unpaid overtime) is effectively lowering your salary/wage/call-it-whateber-you-want.

Conniving manager. "We want you to pitch in a little." Hourly workers are not paid to "pitch in". For the record, The concept of pitching in to help the company for free is silly. LOL.

Haha, even while working as a cart pusher for walmart, the managers would be outside causing trouble. They were like, "you better be working", but then there would be days when the lot wasn't even busy. I had a set routine to round them up where I could take breaks waiting for them to build up in the parking lot again. They just want to make to a living hell.

People always think wrong about salaried employees. Let's say your salary is based on 45 hours but you work 55 hours this week.. next week you're supposed to have 10 hours of comp time where you're only on to work 35 hours. People just let themselves get worked over by their jobs and bosses. It's really sad.
