It baffles me that the US still measure almost everything in imperial units. For something like this, metric feels more appropriate and precise. But if it works for you good on you.

Some white UV activated glow in the dark paint along the edge of the saber blade would really tie it all together

Norm love your stuff. Only thing is this video ends too soon because you put up your 'finale' footage for this build and there are like 3 enormous links blocking the footage. We just need a few more seconds of footage before those giant links cover everything.

Much of these materials are used in ADA Signage which is the field I work in, Rowmark makes some really great dual tone acrylic, including metallic look face with black middle for laser etching. Also the Matte Black Acrylic is actually called Black P95, P95 is offered in a few different colors including Clear, White and a few Beige colors. Weld-On with a needle applicator is good, but a better route to create that background without mess would be to laminate the piece completely with something like MacTac which is a wide format double sided adhesive. Next laser cut the entire set of shapes and use the negative space that was created by the laser cutter as a "Carrier Template" to peel and stick the pieces, and roll them with a brayer to get good adhesion.

Just need Hot Toys 1/6th scale Moff Gideon and you have a complete fight scene diorama. Great work as always and always enjoy your DIY fun project and lighting/photo shoot of your BANDAI Medicom Kaneda bike with Nebula and also 1/6th Mk. 43 w/ Hulkbuster.

Now you HAVE to buy Moff Gideon to complete the scene. Sixth Scale collecting is a bit of an addiction.

Would love to see your process on actually calculating the geometry in Illustrator once you’ve made your sketch. I can imagine things and sketch them all day, but how do you actually make things fit in the software so the cuts fit in real life?

A CO2 laser cutter has a cutting thickness (kerf) of about 0.3 millimeters. Once you know the physical tolerances of a given material (plywood being squishy, as opposed to acrylic being relatively uncompressible for instance) pieces can be made to be perfectly snap-fit, taking into account both the thickness of the laser and the needed overlap for a strong pressure fit. Besides that everything is quite straightforward really, it comes out exactly as drawn.

@@br88dy Anytime. I can only recommend to get an intro to laser cutting at a local makerspace - the potential is vast to say the least. And unlike 3d printing and CNC machining, it is very, very fast.

@@piorism I finished the Y1200 Further Fab laser cutter build last year and am looking forward to using it. I can't be away from home at the shop all day until my very elderly dogs have transitioned out of this world lol. I am very comfortable with Fusion360 and 3D printing objects I've designed. But with the laser cutter, 3D printers, and my modelling skills combined...I get giddy. Do you have a laser cutter?
@piorism

@@br88dy Ha, you have all you need then, cool ! I have access to a Gbos cutter at a local uni space, which I really enjoy ; also some experience with a Trotec but not a fan of the way the job managing software operates. Currently waiting for a tiny 400x400 diode laser to arrive for smaller scale projects at home :) All it takes is a good vector drawing program really. I personally cannot stand Illustrator/Inkscape/Affinity as they are all incredibly slow and clunky to operate. I do all my 2d drafting for cutting in MOI3D as its CAD tools are very fast and well thought out, similar to oldschool Autocad really.

Really great work. I was thinking the 1/8" material would be too thick for raised the panels, but it really scales well. I think it might be too thick for a 1/6 Death Star panel, but spot on for this. I also use the masking to make the pinstriping on mine... just using a rattle can works great and can give you very clean lines even at a small scale like this.
