Forrest only said "was" to help us understand that his mother use to say this; but no longer saids it because she had died. If she were alive he would of said "my momma always saids....life is like....a box of chocolates. But instead he saids "my momma always said" past tense. Its just letting us know she died. His mom saids quote in the movie. Forrest just refers to it.

I just watched an SNL skit called Celebrity Game Night. In that skit they had the sentence " LIFE IS LIKE A BOX ' and the rest they were supposed to fill in. They would not have mistakenly misquoted that as it is iconic. The joke was no one was smart enough to fill in the rest... being "of chocolates !" I had that same VHS. I wish I still did. It's really scary this Mandela effect. It's something.... NOT GOOD

Watched several times a year every year since its release, as a kid and as an adult. It has always been "was". The vhs box is paraphrasing in present time, Forrest is quoting the past. At the time his mother said it, she would have said "life is like a box of chocolates". When Forrest refers to it in the past it is "life was like a box of chocolates". His mother had died by the time he met his son too and had probably been said on purpose at the bus stop to foreshadow mama's death. Almost forgot, Mama Gump said it again on her death bed.

Even though she died it still doesnt make it sound correctly, saying was makes the whole sentence wrong. Saying life IS refers to how life is in general, it's not about how something used to be, it is still that way today, if you say WAS it means it is something that used to be a certain way.

They also have original TV show airings (aired on that particular date on regular cable TV mind you) and original theatrical releases (just in the theaters released on its original release date) that they do probably change before being released to VHS, DVD, or streaming. In the English Language Version he says "Life WAS like a box of chocolates." and in the German version of the movie he says "Life IS like a box of chocolatess" - "Das Leben IST wie eine Schachtel Pralinen" so why would they translate this wrong if he said "WAS" in the first place?! In order for that to be the case it would have to be remembered on a larger scale and also have no explanation. Which here not alot of people remember it as you or some others do. Also there is an explanation why some might remember it like that because his mom said it like that. It's very easy to get 2 things switched. Unlike the infamous lord Vader scene everyone remembers it as Luke I am your father not no I am your father. And there was never a scene in the movie where he did say luke I am your father so there is no room for confusion or explanation. Based on these principles the scene your group is referencing can not be a Mandela effect.

The Quote Was from Sally Field's Character while she was on her deathbed. The picture and quote were 2 different scenes. Life "was" like a box of chocolates because he was explaining to someone else how his mom always said life "is" like a box of chocolates. Mama always saif life "was" like a box of chocolates is in past tense referring to what his mom use to say and to the fact that he was holding, eating, and sharing a box of chocolates. Nothing creepy or unusual about any of this except for the fact that a lot of people only remember the quote from the bench scene. It wasn't his quote it "was" his mom's.
