Manson requested and was granted permission to move to San Francisco, where, with the help of a prison acquaintance, he obtained an apartment in Berkeley. In prison, he had been taught to play steel guitar by 1930s bank robber Alvin Karpis; now, living mostly by panhandling, he soon got to know Mary Brunner, a twenty-three-year-old University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate working as an assistant librarian at UC Berkeley. After moving in with her, according to a second-hand account, he overcame her resistance to his bringing other women in to live with them; before long, they were sharing Brunner's residence with eighteen other women.
Manson also established himself as a guru in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury, which, during 1967's "Summer of Love", was emerging as the signature hippie locale. Expounding a philosophy that included some of the Scientology he had studied in prison, he soon had his first group of young followers, most of them female.
Before the summer was out, Manson and eight or nine of his enthusiasts piled into an old school bus they had re-wrought in hippie style, with colored rugs and pillows in place of the many seats they had removed. Hitting the road, they roamed as far north as Washington State, then southward through Los Angeles, Mexico, and the southwest. Returning to the Los Angeles area, they lived in Topanga Canyon, Malibu, and Venice-western parts of the city and county.
In an alternative account, which does not mention the eighteen girls at Brunners place, Manson, apparently accompanied by Brunner, acquired Family members during some months of travels that were undertaken, in part, in a Volkswagen van; it was November when the school bus set out from San Francisco with the enlarged group.

Never Say Never to Always was on Charlie’s album Lie: The Love and Terror Cult. (Could there be a more appropriate title???) The girls sing it on that album Charlie doesn’t sing this one. Only the girls do. Charlie sings the other songs on the album. You can find the songs from Lie: The Love and Terror Cult on KZbin. And also the songs from the other album The Family Jams. All of the songs on that album were written by Charlie but Charlie doesn’t sing on this one because he was already in jail. Steve “Clem” Grogan sings the male vocals on this one. I haven’t heard all of the songs on this one. I believe that I’ve heard them all. A few are great like Look at Your Game Girl, Home is Where You’re Happy, and Cease to Exist. Although Cease to Exist is creepy as only Charlie can do creepy.

Although often forgotten, I always wonder about the girl’s families. Can you imagine? You have already been worried about your child, not knowing where they are. Then they suddenly reappear as brainwashed murderers. And it is infamous! And everyone in their communities and circles has to have known this was their children. Of course I feel more for the victims and their loved ones. But it has to also be horrible for the loved ones of the murderers. You know the parents went over it all in their heads for he rest of their lives. Trying to figure out when it all went off course. I firmly believe it is all about the company people keep in their formative years that can make or break em. Rarely to this extent. But it is still very true.

I’ve thought about that a bit myself especially after watching one of Leslie’s parole hearings and her father is interviewed. You can see and hear his pain. It is sad. However for most of them, if their parents hadn’t made some of the bad choices they made their kids wouldn’t have gotten involved with Charlie. Most of the women in the core group, not the ones who came and went, had daddy issues. They were looking for an older, but not too old man who would love them and protect them. They thought they’d found that “father” in Charlie. Charlie was a con man, a thief, a drug dealer, and a pimp. He had to be good at lying. He had to be able to manipulate people. He had an ability to read a person even just after meeting them. He knew them. They felt loved and understood and like they belonged. Charlie told them whatever he thought they wanted to hear. Charlie said “These aren’t my children. These are your (society’s) children. You kick them out and I take them in.” He summed it up pretty good right there. Here’s a rundown of what the parents messed up. -Patricia: Her father had been married before and had a daughter from that marriage. She and Patricia weren’t close in age or any other way. After Patricia graduated high school she moved into her half-sister’s apartment and got a job. Her half-sister was a drug addict. I think that the parents didn’t pay enough attention to Patricia because they were occupied with Patricia’s half-sister and her drug addiction. From what I in understood that Patricia’s parents didn’t show her affection or at least not much She thought she was ugly. The first one to tell her that she was beautiful was Charlie. -Susan. Both parents were alcoholics. Her dad had Susan giving his drinking buddies a “good time”. Her older brother also sexually abused her. Her mother died of cancer when Susan was 14. Her older brother was in the military by then so she was free of that abuse. Everything fell apart. Susan’s father expected 14 year old Susan to do all the housewifey/mama things that Susan’s mother had done in addition to going to school. Her father couldn’t pay the medical bills from his wife’s cancer. He had to sell the house. He shuffled Susan and her younger brother to various other family members. At some point he rented an apartment but he found a job and he moved leaving 16 year old Susan and her younger brother to fend for themselves. Susan was a junior in high school and she was attending school in the daytime and working when she wasn’t in school because she had to keep a roof over her and her brother’s heads and food in their bellies. Over Christmas break in 1966 Susan drove to San Francisco and didn’t return. She was 18. She made friends with some criminal bikers who sold drugs and committed armed robbery. She helped. She was in prison for a short while. Back to San Francisco. She met Anton LaVey who had started the Church of Satan. (Not the Temple of Satan. They’re different.) Susan joined. Then she met Charlie right at the time that she was becoming homeless because the bikers that she’d been living with who had been paying the rent got arrested over drugs. So Charlie asked her if she wanted to go with him and his little group. And she did. -Mary was the first and she was not really controversial. She was from Wisconsin and had been attending college in California and she was working as an assistant librarian at the college’s library. She was quiet and shy. That kind of girl who buttons her blouse all the way up to the top button. She was out walking her poodle one day and Charlie saw her and he started talking to her and somehow arrangements were made for Charlie to move into Mary’s apartment with her. She undoubtedly thought that it was going to be just her and Charlie, girlfriend and boyfriend. She didn’t know that he was planning on bringing in other was girls. -Lynette. Her father was career military. She was abused by him in some way either physically or sexually or both. Someone on another thread said that her family lived near Lynette when Lynette was a young teen. This lady says that she and her brother were young 2-4 maybe? Their older sister was friends with Lynette. Sometimes Lynette would babysit this lady and her brother. She says Lynettette was terribly mean to them. Nothing physical but she’d hide and then jump out and scream to scared them. I know that there’s more but I don’t remember. Of course when this lady’s parents or older sister were around Lynette was all nice. Lynette told the young kids never to tell anyone about what was going on when she was babysitting. Finally the lady worked up the courage to tell her mom what had been happening and after that Lynette wasn’t allowed in their house anymore. Lynette got into drugs. Her father got fed up and kicked her out. -Leslie. Ran away, I believe. She was from a middle class or upper middle class family. She was pretty. She was Homecoming Queen. Totally not the kind of person that you’d think would do this. I don’t know a lot. Her parents divorced when she was a teen. She was damaged by that. She didn’t feel like she got to spend enough time with her father. She got pregnant in high school (not sure of her age). Her mother literally forced her to have an abortion against her will. I’m not sure about how this happened but it is said that Leslie’s mother performed the abortion at home. I don’t think abortion was legal in California at that time. And I question how her mother did this. Was she a doctor or nurse? How did she know how to do it? Maybe her mom knew of something that could be easily obtained that would induce an abortion. I do know this. Her mother took the dead fetus and buried it in the backyard in a potted plant or tree. -Dianne Lake. She was 14 when she joined The Family. Her parents had been living the thippie commune lifestyle. Trouble was that starting when she was 11 she was having sex with grown men. It was discussed with her parents who knows how many times and they didn’t do anything about it. So the commune decided that they were going to have to kick Dianne’s family out because the commune didn’t want to be known as a place where you can do statutory rape and get away with it. They were also concerned that the authorities might find out and then people would go to jail. Dianne’s parents had heard of The Family so they decided to send her there. If Dianne left the commune there would be no need for the rest of the family to move. Dianne’s parents wrote a note to Charlie telling him that Dianne was coming. The note also gave parental rights over Dianne to Charlie. -I don’t know much backstory on Bruce, Bobby, and Clem. -Tex. One word - sociopath. He’s the only one still in prison without any recommendations for parole. As far as I’m concerned, they can grant parole release to all of the Manson Family members who are still alive and in prison ****EXCEPT**** Tex.

Lots of them didn't have families
@christyt4249
@christyt4249 Жыл бұрын
@@pamelaoliver8442 Actually the majority of them did have families. The only ones that have talked about having tragic upbringings are Dianne Lake, Susan Atkins, Catherine Share, Ruthann Moorehouse and Charlie himself. Leslie VanHouten, Patricia Krebwinkel and Tex Watson have all said they had good parents, who loved them. Even the ones with divorced parents still had relationships with both, until getting so absorbed in the counter culture. The parents of those in prison were interviewed over the years and seem like descent hard working people, who were just as shocked as everyone else that their children could do such horrendous acts. They also continued visiting their children in prison the rest of their lives (I believe all the parents have passed by now). Susan’s father is the exception and did not stand by her at trial or in prison. But he had already dropped her even before she met Manson. He had his own set of issues. And her mother died when she was young, Sandra Good’s father was a stockbroker in San Diego. And she had a very charmed upbringing. And Nancy Pittman and Deidre Shaw (Angela Lansbury’s daughter) came into the Family at the same time. They both grew up in very wealthy and famous circles. Lansbury got her daughter away from all that real fast (lucky her). Lynette Squeaky Fromme seemed to come from a normal middle class family, with two parents also. But there has been some conversation about her father not treating her well. Look up about Mary Brunner’s parents. They seem like such salt of the earth people, who did so much for their children and their community. They even took in the son she and Charlie had and raised him. He was interviewed years ago and said that they were definitely his parents, not his grandparents. He cannot say enough good things about them. They desperately wanted their daughter and grandson away from all that. Krenwinkle’s father is the one that kept visiting her in prison in forcing her to come to grips with what she had done. She credits him with loving her all while forcing her to admit what she had done. She has spoken about him doing this many times. Watson’s parents seemed to never really accept that he did. But they also stood by him even after he was in prison VanHouten was also very close with her father. He too, stood by her even after conviction. The parents have spoken about being really sick about their children during the time they were with Manson. They did not know where they were and had no contact with them, until their arrests (Well Tex did go home to his parents after the murders to hide out because the heat was coming). Tex’s parents ran a store in their small town, Leslie’s father was in insurance and her mother a teacher. These all seemed like very typical 60’s upbringings, with the few exception of the few I mentioned coming from bad home life’s. So most did have parents who cared. They just threw it all away. And it all had to be so heartbreaking and embarrassing for their parents.

Christine Brett Wtf r u talking about? Susan original testimony was for the state against the other “family” members but then the DA couldn’t use her as the state side witness because she sold her story to the media n they published a book that convicted them all as guilty before the trial was even halfway through so they had to throw out Atkins testimony otherwise it would have been a miss trial. N none of the other girls got out And the reason they look happy is because half the footage u see is when they aren’t even on trial it’s when they r testifying for the prosecution and they think they r getting immunity. The footage of them in there blue denim dresses and blue sweaters is when they r defendants. Try a book instead of msm sometime. It might blow ur mind

Manson's dreadful childhood does not excuse his crimes, but goes a long way to explain them. And whilst i acknowledge what he did, i have to say that i find him fascinating. These girls were teenage runaways, with low self-esteem and loneliness. Charles told them what sounded good to them. Made them feel wanted. Gave them a sense of belonging. He manipulated their emotions to obtain loyalty. This emotional manipulation, combined with a drug addiction that he facilitated, made them dependent on him and made them feel a sense of servitude towards him. Not excusing their behaviour, but they probably felt like they would die or be murdered by him if they ever thought of leaving him or disobeying him. They weren't independent enough or wise enough to do the right thing (for example, go to the police and ask for help). They also didn't feel they could trust the police or society as a whole, considering the shape they were in before meeting Charles.

Susan Atkins was involved with demons. She went to San Francisco over Christmas break during her senior year of high school. She didn’t return. She met up with some criminal bikers who were dealing drugs and committing armed robberies. She ended up meeting Anton LaVey who was just starting the Church of Satan (*not* The Temple of Satan. They’re different.) She joined the Church of Satan and performed in some kind of ritual that had the word “witches” in its name. Several young women were topless and danced around a cauldron. She left San Francisco with Charlie and 3 other girls in the summer of 1967. I don’t know when her affiliation with The Church of Satan ended. She became Catholic in prison. Her book is aptly titled Child of Satan, Child of God.

Nope, Leslie van houten is the only one that may have not turned out to be a killer, although technically she's not actually a killer now, as she stabbed Rosemary Labianca after she was already dead. look into their past. The reason they killed those people had very little to do with Manson, and everything to do with their own abusive backgrounds and individual severe mental illnesses. really the more you read about it that and Tex Watson is the reason those people died.

They’re talking about the LaBianca house. It was kinda/sorta/maybe random, but I can’t say for sure. They were out for 3 hours driving around looking for a house to hit. At one time Charlie and the Family were living in an RV parked in their friend Harold True’s driveway. They were in and out of the house at all hours and they were making noise. It so happens that Harold True’s house was next door to the LaBianca’s house. Someone had been calling police complaining about the noise a few times. The police came out every time. Charlie didn’t like being anywhere near a police officer. If they’d done some snooping the police may have found reason to arrest people. Besides Charlie did not like snitches. At all. He considered whoever was calling police about the noise to be a snitch. He believed that the LaBiancas were the ones who called the police, so they were snitches. Killing them was Charlie’s revenge. That’s the same reason that Charlie, Clem, Tex, and Bruce murdered stunt man/ranch hand Donald “Shorty” Shea. Someone was paying him to report anything criminal or suspicious that Charlie or The Family did to the police. He’d been snitching on The Family to the police.

What was basically a satanic blood sacrifice/ritual? And who did it? Susan Atkins met Anton LaVey in San Francisco. He was creating The Church of Satan. (NOT The Temple of Satan. @@LittleMighty1956 - OK. I get what you’re saying about the Tate murders looking like a satanic blood sacrifice/ritual. One of the Charlie conspiracy theories is based on the fact that Sharon played the role of a witch in The Devil’s Eye and there was a Wiccan couple on set as advisors to make sure things were as realistic as possible. This is fact. Speculation is that Sharon was intrigued by Wicca and that she somehow got involved in Wicca or in LaVey’s Church of Satan When Sharon was pregnant she supposedly tried to leave the Church of Satan IF she was in it in the first place. But as the Eagles sing in Hotel California “You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave” Disclaimer: I am NOT saying that the song Hotel California is satanic nor am I saying that The Eagles, Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski or anyone else had anything to do with satanism. I quoted that lyric to make a point. If you’re reading this and you believe that the song Hotel California and/or the Eagles are linked to satanism in any form PLEASE don’t tell me. I do not want to know. IF it were true that Sharon was dabbling in satanism, witchcraft, or something similar it is plausible that she could’ve wanted to get away from all that in preparation for her baby’s birth. Again IF she were trying to leave that could’ve resulted in her being murdered. “Religions”, groups, clubs, and cults do not always allow their members to leave because they want to keep certain things secrets. They don’t want people who are not in the organization to know secrets because these people could tell other people and that could be problematic depending on what the secrets are. As long as someone remains a member, the organization holds power over that person. Current members aren’t likely to spill secrets because they know that there will be retaliation from the organization. Those who leave are a lot more likely to tell the organization’s secrets. The organization can usually find some way to retaliate but former members tell things anyway. If Sharon was involved in anything dark and was trying to leave, whatever dark group she was in could’ve paid Charlie to have her killed along with anyone else who was there to keep them quiet. But I don’t think that that’s what happened There’s also a rumor that Roman put a hit out on her. I do not believe this at all. Yeah, he was a jerk, but I don’t think he would’ve had people killed just to get him out of the marriage and out of the responsibilities of being a parent. If that’s what he wanted he could’ve divorced her. Murder was not necessary. While I agree that the bloody, brutal crime scene looks like a blood sacrifice in some ways, I don’t believe that satanists did it or paid to have it done. For one thing it doesn’t look like much of a ritual. It’s chaotic and messy, bodies in the living room and on the lawn. The panic that the victims went through is very evident. I didn’t know that Anton LaVey introduced Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield to Hollywood. All I ever knew about him is that he started the Church of Satan. There are so many theories around this. We know who did it. We know some, but not all of the motives. This will never be solved and wrapped up neatly in a box with a bow on top. We know who did it. We will never know everything. Those who were there don’t know everything. They know what they did personally and they know what they witnessed. But we will never have every piece of the puzzle all neatly put together
