I pirated the game back in the day, so it was very interesting to see it pop up on Steam and reading in the forums from other people who missed the music. Turns out it was unlicensed and only a part of the pirated pre-release! We know this because the person who answered in the Steam forum is apparently the original author (who coded the original game at 15!) so I had to buy the game to support him, and you should too!

As far as I can tell, the only difference between the Atari 8-bit and 5200 versions is that the latter has a sound effect when you kill enemies with your sword, while on the former there is no sound. It only makes sense that these versions play so well, as this was the home of Robert Jaeger's original 48k Montezuma. As we all know, that original version had all sorts of neat bells and whistles, but was never completed, which is why you couldn't defeat Montezuma. Thankfully, he has finally "completed" his masterpiece for modern platforms, which is just fantastic. I keep hoping that someone out there would translate the "complete" Montezuma for the Atari 8-bit computers, if just to bring it all back home.

Played a ton of this game on the 5200. I also still have my boxed copy of the Commodore 64 and Atari version. Double sided floppy worked for me since I had both systems in the 80s.

A game of many names. I loved it on my Atari 800XE under the name Preliminary Monty. That version did lack a few of the graphical bells and whistles, but it was just small adornments in the background.

Oh nice, I love to see the comparison of this game on these 9 popular retro systems. I remember having a copy of the game on a 5.25" floppy and it was for our Apple II. I was really just starting to cut my teeth on gaming when I was playing this one back in the day!

From how the levels are designed in the original game, I'm pretty sure the programmer used some tricks in how the level data is stored to save memory. Levels look like they reference each other or some library to reduce duplication of similar layouts, also I'm sure some level data is packed (like in case there's a big rectangular block of bricks there's no need to store each brick individually)

Hi Tom, great video! I played it on the c64 for the first time, love to see all the other version. I’m always amazed with what the VCS can do; 5200 and xl version are almost the same, BTW the 5200 was a “stripped down” Atari 8-bit computer. Nice also the ad, there wasn’t specific games ad on tv here in Italy at the time (just for whole system). Question: do you own all the computers, or used also some emulation? Thanks 👍😉- Tony

I have the Coleco, 5200, and SMS cartridges. For as much more detailed the SMS version is, I just love the classic look that much more (of the character mostly). For good ol' classic gameplay with a joystick, I think the Coleco and 5200 are the best (I use a 2600 joystick with both; the 5200 with a special adapter of course, but you could go with a Wico instead. Also have a custom Sanwa 5200 Arcade stick and 2 buttons + keypad, which is also perfect for this game. Overall, if you have the right tools, 5200 FTW :D Like the darker colors more than the Coleco. But if you have to play with the OG joystick, Coleco in my opinion. I have a NES styled controller for both systems as well, but I honestly never use it, since it removes half of what is unique with all of those 2nd Gen system for me. The game was YEARS before it's time for home consoles, so it's not TOO MUCH out of place on the SMS, but still very simple compared to what the system could do. And while it has less charm in my opinion, it might be THE version that current gamers will tend to like the most (especially with the more functional stock controller...). I have yet to try the sequel on the GB/GBC (the 3D PC game does not seem good, but it's interesting since I've never heard of it!) EDIT : tried the GBC version, and you know, it's an okay little game. Like the map. But definitely overstays its welcome quite fast imho, and yea, I prefer the OG.

Unfortunately Montezuma's Revenge is not my favourite game. But the Sega Master System looks really nice. I see that your Atari XL is connected to a Hitachi monitor. My opinion is that Hitatchi is a very good producer with a high quality. What kind of inputs does your Hitachi monitor has got?
@FloppyDeepDive2 жыл бұрын
The Sega Master system is sweet! It's just a composite input. I really love this monitor. I got it in a pickup last year along with a C64 breadbin. The guy was from Canada and it was original system from when he was a kid. Check out my Canadian Commodore video to show the whole story.
