As a Chilean, one aspect that does give me some hope is the fact that we finally have a team of players that are winning titles and also staying in good form. Gabriel Suazo won the Coup de France in his first season w FC Toulouse, 20 year old Dario Osorio won his first league title with FC Midtjylland being a HUGE contributor to the team, Erick Pulgar being a copa libertadores winner, Alexis winning the serie A with Inter (regardless of playing time he was a contributor.) on top of all this the time is finally tasting true blood for the first time in years, going against a team like France and actually seeing where they stand and how they need to play to match players that are consistently at the top level. It’s more eye opening than getting scored on by Argentina and Brazil and not knowing how to change. These players have also never looked more confident in their lives, we’d lost so much time with the last three coaches.

Paraguay; to the surprise of many, has always been the 4th best south american team by a long ass distance. It wasn't even close until Chile had that one golden generation nothing ago. Even after everything the Chilean golden generation won, it still is basically tied on every front for the 4th place in south america. Paraguay never recovered from that insane match against Spain in the 2010 world cup, possibly the best match of that WC.

You know what I find interesting. You emphasized how Ecuador qualified 30 times yet have never won which made me remember that there are only 10 countries in conmebol. Which means that they really all have to qualify all the times to even have a tournament. I find that rather interesting. Conmebol and concacaf should fuse into a single American confederation and hold proper qualifiers. I think that ought to help diversify the winning pools (one team winning the competition 15 times is ridiculous) and it will force the concacaf nations to actually be better.
