I grew up crewing on Snipe class occasionally and they were a great boat. Back then they were mostly wood construction with glass boats just beginning to arrive on the scene. Sadly, the local fleet has dwindled to just 3? boats and the fleet is now out of the lime light. Same with Comets and Lightnings locally.

Looks like fun! Do they hang off the side to balance the boat? Im new to this
@andrew__79745 жыл бұрын
Yes, they hang off the side to "balance" the boat, since the wind "pushes" the main sail and the boat heels. Sorry for my wrong way of saying things & the vocabulary, I know all of it in Spanish,lol!

Hey Kassandra, I hope you are still Sniping! It’s called hiking, and it’s fun! I installed cushions on the deck of my Snipe which effects weight transfer forward and aft because u can’t really slide ur butt, but you don’t get fiberglass-ass. I sail my Snipe for 8-10hours with no crew all the time. Eating lunch on a Snipe is challenging though. If u don’t like hiking that’s fine in light wind, just let mainsheet out more. Keep sailing!

crewing on a snipe seems boring only because there is nothing to do besides trim the jib and put on and off the whisker pole
@denbongaerts60354 жыл бұрын
Actually there is a lot more to crewing on the Snipe. The hiking upwind is pretty heavy and meanwhile they have to trim the whole boat: masttrim, tension on jib halyard, vang, jib lead and the other usuals. Also weight distribution in Snipe is really important so the crew has to balance the whole boat. Also downwind the jib sheet, whisker pole and halyard have to be trimmed almost constantly. And besides all that also think about strategy etc

Yeah, Den hit the nail right on the head. Skipper has tiller and mainsheet. My Snipe is rigged so main Cunningham and Vang are located between the skipper and crew, so I typically control those, but the crew does pretty much everything
