SPOILER WARNING: ******************************* In my opinion, the final episode (the whole final season, really) of "The Sopranos" is a masterpiece, particularly that last final shot. I've honestly never really understood the controversy over it. I understand everything in art is ostensibly up for interpretation, but for me it's really simple: we experience Tony's assassination (in my opinion he is clearly "wacked") as he does- he's there...and then he isn't. It's likely the assassin shoots Tony out of his eye line, for obvious reasons, and he is, in the end, brutally murdered in front of his entire family. Which is, I feel, a perfect way to wrap up the series. Family...and violence, occurring simultaneously, obliterating the Tony Soprano-character. There are actually several references to "being assassinated but not seeing it coming" throughout the final season, particularly a conversation between Bobby and Tony, on the boat in the first episode. David Chase went above and beyond with that final moment. I think it's amazing.

@@mcnultyssobercompanion6372 It feels extremely apropos that when our protagonist is suddenly executed, the screen cuts to black. We were following Tony from the very beginning of the story, and it’s only right that we end with him. No sappy death monologue….no flash forward….no promise of a brighter tomorrow. Just a man dining out with his family, coming face-to-face with the consequences of his actions.

I think people who watch mafia movies need to stop wanting these movies to be amazing and a masterpiece Many Saints of Newark is a brilliant movie because it isn’t trying to make you like these men because they are vicious murderers. If you didn’t like the movie that’s good because you should not like the mafia and their lifestyle was bad. They took advantage of people They murdered people and they used people There is nothing to admire or idolize about the mafia. If you can take anything away from the movie it’s not whether you think it’s good or not It’s whether it made you reflect that this life only leads to death and destruction

It’s not abrupt if you’ve seen the series. It’s perfect.
@dazed1nyc3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't end abruptly at all as a matter of fact. People seem to forget that this movie is about what went on in the family during Tony's childhood and into his teens, specifically the events that made him ultimately choose the path that he did. The movie isn't perfect, I would have loved to have seen more time spent on certain characters and/or stories, but as far as the ending goes, at least to me it was perfectly clear that for the first time Tony was contemplating joining the family business, which we all know he did.
@b.t.16323 жыл бұрын
Season 3 of the Sopranos, ralph tells Jackie Jr about when tehy were all teenagers and he, Tony, Jackie Sr and Sil had their own little crew. Sil and Tony are the same age. You would think the person who directed that would know it for the movie. Sadly, this is the most minor of the nonsensical, incoherent problems with Many Saints. David Chase screwed the pooch on this.

I watched it again. I liked it, though it was very different than I expected. I think this would've done better as another season, or 2 (or 2, 3 movies). I love all the references, the mannerisms and looks of Tony and a lot of them loose ends tied, like we know who killed Dickie and why (I suppose he didn't have the makings of a varsity athlete). How dickie basically made Tony in his image and acted very much like him. How and why the mob leads to an early grave in a shockingly similar fashion, no matter what rank. How they sort of look down on black people, but they do work together and have friends (but saying you like a black man is just not done, like most of those mobsters have to be Italian in one way or the other - it's a stranglehold similar to the early grave sentiment). Adult Tony did the same - alienating his daughter in the process - for a while. And black people do about the same. You act as a group, a group that was discriminated against and parts of them formed gangs/mobs to gain the advantage in that unfair world (by intimidation). In the end, they all get sucked in. Like we see with Tony. The movie is basically about all the factors that lead to him becoming a mob boss: The high intellect and leadership skills, the looney mother, his father - who could use a personality transplant and Dick actually being nice to him - for the wrong reasons. The only one who seems to care. The wisdom and insight of the guy in jail. Tony visits dr. Melfi to talk about the contradictions in his life and how they mess him up. Here, the zen murderer fullfills that role and he sees Dick exactly for what he is, but he also tries to get him on the 'right' path. Dickie talks about how everything he touches turns to ash - and that is recognised for what it is by mr Zen.. It's the mob life. You screw others over and you have to be very selfish to make it as a gangster. And ruthless. But it doesn't mix in with the family life. Dick ignores girlfriend when frustrated by his own mob life and the toll, girlfriend cheats, Dick kills girlfriend. Like said, the life itself leads to an early demise in the same style: It's how life works for the maffia. In the end he tells Dick to avoid Tony, but it's obvious it is already too late. Tony _will_ apply himself, but in the wrong direction. It has been set in motion. Movie ends. I think that without the knowledge of the series, a lot of it just doesn't make that much sense. And there's no real pay off when you don't know adult tony, or dante, or 'uncle' Junior. And also, like the ending, it just needs a little time to sink in. The one real flaw is 'newark' ;)

Can't believe how good Michael Gandolfini did. Him and Bernthal were fantastic. My biggest criticism is some of the casting is way off. Silvio felt like a parody impersonation and Paulie didn't seem anything like his older counterpart. But their roles are pretty small.

To be fair the original silvio is like a cartoon portrayal of a mob guy (and I love it)
@mcnultyssobercompanion63723 жыл бұрын
But Silvio was always, in my opinion, kind of a walking parody anyway. I always felt his presence in the show was baffling, even though somehow it did always work. Still, just personally, nothing about the character, to me, ever seemed quite real. Steven Van Zandt's performance always seemed "hyper real". Was this what David Chase was going for? As if Dante the character somehow magically stepped out of an old Warner Brothers crime film from the 30's and into modern day? I've honestly wondered whether the Dante character was *meant* to be exactly that kind of caricature. I'm not sure if Chase has said anything publicly, but it's always kind of been my "head canon". Admittedly, I haven't seen the film yet, so I can't speak to how he's portrayed in it. Looking forward to watching it though. I'm glad to see it's getting favorable reviews. It's very cool to see you say that Gandolfini's kid pulled it off. I noticed his oddly dark screen presence while watching the final season of "The Deuce", but had no idea who his father was. Had my fingers crossed for him since I heard he was playing Tony.

I liked this film, I thought it was ok, not too bad, but almost every character in this film was a cartoon version of the original character. With the exception of Vera Farmiga and Alessandro Nivola, everyone else was simply over the top. Why does young Junior look like an old Junior? What young man sports the clothing that he is going to end up wearing as an old man? Why does Paulie need to be pumping weights, was it because he mentioned it once in the TV show? On top of that, not one time, was Johnny Soprano referred to as "Johnny Boy" which kind of annoyed me a bit.... And, this film makes Tony's biggest crime the hijacking of an ice cream truck, when the show made Feech's card game hijacking the biggest move of his crime career! There was also the time Tony watched his father chop off a man's hand and take over the Pork Store, which led to fainting spells! How is this not in the film? This film leaves out many milestone moments from the show, from Tony's life. Hopefully, this film segways into a mini series. Still, I thought the story was told ok, but this should have remained a mini-series as I believe was originally planned. A mini-series would have also allowed for a bigger story to be told. The Many Saints should have been the story of how a king becomes a king; this is not that story.

Having never seen the Sopranos and having seen this trailer a million times, I have two takeaways from this movie. A) The trailer way oversold this as "Tony Soprano early origins movie" and that really messed me up for the first quarter of this movie. B) With no context of the show besides knowing of James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, I felt very lost in this movie and it very much wasn't clear if this was supposed to be a movie about a story that's been told in the show and here it is fleshed out or if this was a wholly new story that just helps lead into the show

It's sorta like the Star Wars prequels in the sense that it's a story that was alluded to in the show, that we didn't have all the facts on and a lot was left to mystery (the version told in the show seems unreliable, like the person telling it is intentionally not giving the whole truth, and the movie addresses that mystery)
