A quick review with some thoughts on The Sopranos movie prequel, The Many Saints of Newark, which was released October 1, 2021 on HBO Max.
The most disappointing thing about the movie was the disturbing lack of gabagool. Oof madone! David Chase, as a punishment, no more gabagool for you!
*SPOILERS*
This video contains spoilers from the HBO hit series The Sopranos and also the prequel movie, The Many Saints of Newark.
This episode was narrated and produced by Geoffrey Ciani (aka - Rummy).

Chase admitted that he wanted to do a film about the Newark riots, not necessarily about the Sopranos. When you realize this, you can come to the conclusion that he stuffed in Sopranos references only to cash in on his popular series, knowing people would likely check it out if it was labelled a Sopranos prequel. And that's presumably what he did. That would explain why some of the characters are almost parodies of their former counterparts and why there's many inconsistencies. A Sopranos film was never needed, and I think Chase knows this, whether he admits it or not.

Huh? That's no excuse because no one would have made the crap about the Newark riots had there not been a promise of Sopranos backstop in it. He just lost his touch and making excuses. I don't buy it. He tried to do two things with the movie and failed at both.

I hope with the sequels they're planning to do I think. I hope they explore Tony and Livia's relationship more. The kitchen scene between the two were so great. Seeing Livia actually try to be a mother to Tony was so interesting but of course Livia being Livia, her negativity ruined the moment she wanted to create with Tony. There's also a nice little detail I noticed in the scene when Johnny Boy returns home and Livia starts to complain to Johnny Boy, you can just see how annoyed Tony is by her yelling and complaining in the scene. Reminds of when Tony was arguing with Janice in the show and brought up about the years he suffered under Livia's negativity while Janice wasn't there.

I liked the movie as most of the actors present obviously put in a lot of effort to copy the mannerisms and the speech patterns of the characters from the series. I actually laughed out loud during the scene when young tony goes to the warehouse to talk to Dickie and Silvio goes to answer the door, the actor even had that swaying walk that Steven Van Zandt had on the show, it was awesome. I echo the same sentiment as most who have reviewed this film, it's too disjointed and tries to focus on too many things at one time. There are the obvious fan service moments for those who followed the show, like Livia getting her hair shot, the ever present Junior meme about tony not having the makings of a varsity athlete, etc etc. While those were great, I think some of that could have been snipped in favor of telling a more coherent story. The conflict with Harold goes nowhere and there isn't really any satisfying resolution to the rivalry they seemed to try to set up with him and Dickie. It's also strange that the movie ends on him, again when he wasn't even a major focus of the story. I dunno why it ends on him, as if it's being suggested this won't be the last time we see the character. If we got to know him better throughout the film then maybe this tidbit would have an impact, but it falls pretty flat. Overall I was entertained, it's not the best movie out there or anything but I would not mind seeing this cast again together.
@steve1560

Junior was also salty about Tony looking up to Dicky, not playing catch with him in the rain - that's why he originally said he didn't have the makings of a varsity athlete. He carried this through his whole life, including subconsciously when he had dementia. MSON really shows the depth of his pettiness.

It's just to daunting of a task. This should have been a mini series. This was not really about Tony as we were lead to believe. It's a story about dicky....WHO CARES?!?! We thought the movie was mediocre. We’ve been anticipating a really good story line…..about Tony. It seemed watered down with all of the racial crap that seemed to be unnecessary for the story. It made the movie really convoluted and hard to follow at times. Casting was great, especially Uncle Junior and Syl. Michael’s performance was really well done. I Hope they do more Sopranos stories. Here’s my comment from sopranos theories….someone brought up that Paulie pulled the trigger --------- I hate that we still really don’t know for certain who pulled the trigger on Dickie. Yes, Tony told Chrissy in season 6 that the retired cop was the one who did it and he did it for Jimmy Ruffalo; but now we know it was for Junior. So the question is, was Tony making the story up to settle a score with Barry and have Christopher take care of if….without telling him Uncle June was behind it? Or, was Tony never told that it was Junior who ordered the hit on Dickie? Which leads to another question then, was it really a cop (or Barry) who actually pulled the trigger?

if chase wants to make a movie, he needs to choose a different topic this story needed to be done through a mini-series what i would like to know is why they chose to change major plot points and screw up continuity with the final script the tony in the series would have been a child during the newark riots...same with the rest of the crew the original treatment was to deal only with the gen that came before tony's crew

We had coffee in Starbucks and shared laughs! Once Carlos parked his Cadillac right in front of my apartment in NJ! Peace

Sopranos' great success was due to the actors, not the writing. Always said that. Those TV actors playing Tony, Johnny, Phil, Paulie, Ralph, Carmine, Coco, Rich, Furio, Chrissy, Jackie Jr, Matthew B, P&ssy, Sil were unreal. The Dickie actor wasn't close to them. Chase' writing never carried the show- & the movie proved it. It wasn't bad, but levels below the TV series.

Utter bullsh*t - you need good writing for a successful show. Good actors and performances only take it so far. Chase wasn't the only writer on the Sopranos. Learn the difference between a 2-hour movie and an 80+ episode TV series ffs!!

I see it getting slated, it wasn't perfect but overall I enjoyed it, you made a good point about the revelation and the further possible dimensions it adds to the series, even if the film lacks some of the dimensions of the series. I found that twist hilarious personally as it is completely in line with Juniors pettiness. I think it could have worked better if it had a longer running time and I don't often say that, it kind of felt like a pilot so I hope there's follow ups. I was a bit disappointed in Sylvio's character, he was a personal fave of mine from the show but I think he was a bit of a caricature in this, it's also a bit of a plot hole in continuity that Sylvio could be that much older than Tony. Or maybe the wig made him look younger, that's actually 2 big revelations now that I think of it ha.

I know I'm in the minority but I'd give this movie a solid 'C'. The actors did a fine job, except when it came to Sal's character. In the movie Sal was played as a caricature - it was so bad it was laughable - but that was only one miss. The rest of the actors were wonderful. I think this would be a great 'episode 1' of a new series, but it was not good as a stand-alone movie. Lots of character development, a few action scenes and then roll credits. If they keep making movies or a series out of this then the movie will stand as a good introduction. But as for right now - I was disappointed.

It's kinda sad because i feel like Chase&co kinda blew it with this one. This movie is getting TERRIBLE reviews by audience members and critics alike and that doesn't bode well for any future projects. Let me just say i thought the movie was a ok, definitely not great or memorable but it had its moments. I just hope that HBO doesn't jump ship and cans any future Soprano projects because of reception this project is getting. In a time where gangster films are pretty much on the brink of death i would hate to see the genre go out like this. I think i feel the worst for Michael Gandolfini, i thought he did an excellent job on most his scenes and i would've loved to see him get more of a challenge instead of being put in a corner as a side character because Chase was obviously too much of a coward to actually take a chance on this young actor. The pieces were all there but for some reason they just didn't utilize them. I'm crossing my fingers for a sequel and lets hope Chase actually writes it himself this time instead of asking these hacky writers to do it with him. I think it seriously affected the material in a bad way. Some scenes are classic Chase while others are just utter garbage.

I haven't seen this yet but you have to be REALLY careful when handling productions after a quality show. I think I would prefer if they played it safer, kept a lot of questions unanswered and built more on the characters. I'm not staying make the film boring because you can easily add plenty of story lines and plots while also referencing or adressing some of the audience questions or conversations in the original show. The cast seem really strong and the visuals look great. I mean looking at junior on the steps when he slips I could have sworn that was the original junior at a glance. Also giving Tony less screen time was the correct call. The actor is still new and has lots to learn and had the potential to really kill the character if handled poorly. This way we can HOPEFULLY get more prequels and let the characters build up. The biggest worry I had and you even said so was trying to cram too much in. You can't rush quality. Character development takes time. I would have loved Netflix pick this up for an actual series. Having 10 hours of show time would have benefited the story so much more and the money they would make ooft would have been insane. In fact I they should go to a premium service. Charge less than what we pay now for the basic package and a little more for the premium. Having earlier access to its own made shows like this. There is no doubt this as a series would have made crazy money because every body wants to know what happens.
