I did an interview with Reuters at the time if you really care you can look that up. By the end of 2012 we put our YT channel on the back-burner (instead, focusing on international syndication of our show, which actually did much better $$ there than on YT.) Only at the end of 2018 did we put focus back on the YT channel, which has been growing steadily since. Subs are important, but they aren’t relevant in terms of ultimate reach or revenue.

I don't understand how Machinima was greedy... most of the company was made up of small, moderate success, channels. Smaller success means larger percentages have to be taken to achieve the same result as a low percent on a highly successful channel. (Machinma needed to pay for the support network that It provided) And as for the lengths of the contracts, KZbin was (and still is mostly) an unstable and volatile platform in which entire genres and industries can be destroyed at any given moment. To have any sort of income security on KZbin, even to this day, is worth every penny that they gave up, however, because KZbin decided that they will monetize gaming videos many of these KZbin giants started to realise that they could simply ditch their income security and make more money, until they realised that they couldn't because they hastily signed contracts without taking them seriously...

Another factor that helped lead to Machinima's downfall that wasn't mentioned in this video was when they made the huge sponsorship deal with Levi's back in 2012. It ended up being their only sponsor for the whole year. Machinima started boasting about the creators they had under their umbrella, name dropping Pewdiepie in particular. Some people at Levi's then looked him up and were greeted by a video where Pewds was screaming about r*pe at the top of his lungs. @@JZStudiosonline i wouldn't say it was POPULAR but having words copywritten that are used by artistic communities also really sucks- because to them its an everyday word. Its something that they should at least keep in mind (and the fact another large group like roosterteeth ALSO used the word frequently should be enough for it to be kind of dodgy to claim it). I can find books and pages talking about machinima (making films from video games) dating back to the early 2000's as well so by the time the trademark was made the word used in that context wasn't that "new" I'm not a copywrite expert by far but there's good and bad ways to go about it. A restaurant pulled something somewhat similar to this. The word "Hon". the restaurant was in a town where the word was pretty popular to use, and when she sent out "cease-and-desists" the people there weren't happy- at all. I've never heard the word used in public or online ever but its that kind of backlash in communities it impacts that really hurts them. THATS HOW I KNOW MACHINIMA! I remember being a young kid wanting so had to start up this super big KZbin channel and go with Machinima. Glad I never did that, though I doubt I’d ever get any notoriety considering I was 8 when I wanted to do it, lol. I don't think the fall of Machinima was tied solely to their aggressive and bullish business practices. There was also the loss of some of their biggest talent on the platform. For example, Inside Gaming was arguably their biggest draw on the channel. At the time, it was the go-to place for gaming news coverage. I have fond memories of coming home from middle and high school and refreshing KZbin to see if there was a new video from Inside Gaming, especially when E3 was happening (back when it had prestige and renown). It also helped that it had the crew of Adam Kovic, Bruce Greene, James Willems, Lawrence Sonntag, Sean Poole, Matt Peake, and Joel Rubin, which made the videos all the more enjoyable. When they announced back in 2015 that they were leaving Machinima, it was kind of the beginning of the end for Machinima. They lost possibly their best team and arguably the best part about Machinima overnight. After that, everything felt bland and generic. The charm that Machinima had was drained and wrung out like a wet rag.
@AgeofJP3 жыл бұрын
Inside Gaming and later Funhaus was by far my favorite group of content creators until quite recently when most OGs left Funhaus...the combination of Bruce, James and Adam especially is the funniest dynamic I've come across period. They made a series of playing awful game demos absolutely legendary. I recommend the Demo Disk playlist to anyone who has a sense of humor and no stick up their ass. The tampon bucket, Scrobbles, Boonty Box...their style of comedy was truely unique and I miss it dearly

Machinima was pretty impactful here in Brazil and in many ways shaped KZbin gaming perhaps even more than in the rest of the world. Their network actually helped kickstart a bunch of channels that weren't economically viable by the amount of views (which was an issue cause they burned through their cash reserves), and they also had a couple of "poster boys" (Monark and VenomExtreme) who were a big deal before they entered the network, though it was never proved officially, Machinima ran them a bot to bolster the amount of subs they had, in the beginning it was foul play to deceive the algorithm and get them more spotlight, but it got quite silly when around 2014 they had each about 3M subscribers, which was a ridiculous amount back then, and meanwhile their views were fluctuating around 200-250k and after 2016 got even lower. To this day their mostly dead channels have an insane amount of subs from the bots.
@CopsOnPatrol3 жыл бұрын
Funny Machinima story: I was with them from 2011-2014. My original contract was $2 per 1000 views, all views not just monetized views. In late 2012, I was given an ultimatum. Accept the new contract terms or leave the network. It was $1.96 per 1000 monetized views. They got $1.96 by using my average CPM in the last 3 months. I took that deal. In 2013, my channel was blowing up. 7m views in September out of nowhere. I contacted Machinima and bitched about getting a better contract. They gave me a 80/20 split. October comes around & I get 19m views. My payout was $16,000ish in December. I got pissed thinking “no way, I definitely made more than that.” I contacted them and found out different lol Turns out, I only made $10,800 that month in ad revenue and analytics showed that. I was overplayed by almost $6000 lmao. They paid me on my old contract of $1.96 per 1000 monetized views rather than the new 80/20 split. They were cool about it and said just keep it. Needless to say, I did 😂 but $5000? That’s someone’s salary that month. Idk why they didn’t pursue it. This is partly why Machinima failed. They burned money

Now that they no longer exist it kinda sucks because it's like witnessing Cartoon Network being shutdown and all those memories of watching your favorite entertainment from them are just memories now. Even to this day if I happen to stumble across an old video that still has the Machinima intro it instantly becomes a blast from the past for me.
