This group was part of the Doo Wop era, which I loved as a kid. I think it all started in 1958, I was 9 yrs old. There were a lot Doo Wop groups back then, I still love this song! 👍👏👏👏💚

I think it became popular just a little earlier. One of the first records my aunt gave me for little record player was Earth Angel in 1955. It was the first record I got that wasn't a kid's Little Golden Record. I'm just a year older than you, so you probably know what I'm talking about. Lots of people will wonder what the heck is a "Little Golden Record". 😄

@@ptournasIn 1955 I was only 6 yrs old, I didn’t listen to music back then. My brother bought the single 45 record, he was 12 & I’m 3 yrs younger, which made me 9 yrs old, the year I started to love music.👍🥰

I love that you did this song! Happy jump! I knew you would be impressed! I’ve seen them do this live many times and I met them. I love the lyric when he says that the blue moon had turned to gold when he was no longer alone! Thanks once again Shawn!!!!!! 😀⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gotta Love the "Doo-wop" sound. Guys in the 1950s would stand on the corner and start harmonizing and singing this stuff. Many groups were discovered by talent scouts for record companies searching the streets of America for the top Doo-wop singers. There were many good ones to choose from.

The Woodstock Rock Festival in 1969, even had a Doo-wop group sing. They were called "Sha-Na-Na." They were dressed up in 1950s clothes with greased, slicked Back hair, and all of the rest. They were great. I had a couple of their albums back in the 70s. Great stuff, listening to the roots of Rock and Roll.

This came out in 1961, most pop music was still in 50's mode.

This brings some memories back for me. This came out when I was 13 years old. My father worked at a major record distributor in Boston. He would take me to work with him on Saturdays. We would work until noon, have lunch, and at one o'clock the owner and employees would have a card game. The owner would thank me for helping and tell me I could walk around and take any records I wanted while they played cards. He didn't give me a limit, but I would never take more than about 10. I always mixed in a few that were brand new releases that I hadn't heard on the radio yet. When I got home my best friend and I would listen and guess which would be hits or flops. We had a pretty good record of picking them, but we failed big time on this one, expecting it to be a flop, even though we did really like it. Then we started hearing it on the radio and it shot right up the charts to number one!

Welcome to Doo-Wop! One of the greatest genres in the early days of rock and roll. Other doo-wop groups to check out include the Diamonds, Danny and the Juniors, the Belmonts, the Platters. Many more to be found if you google doo-wop groups of the 50s and 60s. This song is from the 30s but this recording is from the 50s and is VERY different from the original version.

Videos on KZbin- They had a 50- year anniversary of doo wop music, broken down into several parts, on public tv back in '99, and 2000. Many of the old doo wop groups from the 50s came to perform. 'Celebrating fifty years of vocal group harmony. In Part 1, memories from Herb Reed's Platters, Normal Wright & Dave Lerchey in The Del Vikings, Jimmy Beaumont & The Skyliners, Gene Chandler, The Penguins, Johnny Maestro & Brooklyn Bridge'.

The Sha Na Na did a cover of this at Woodstock back in the day that is very good too.The earlier versions of the song were sung as slow ballads, then the Marcels made it into a rock hit with the Du Wap style. BTW.The man Mel Torme is pronounced Tore May.

The Marcels were an American doo-wop group known for turning popular music songs into rock & roll. They were one of only a few multi-racial groups at the time. The group was named after a popular hair style of the day, the marcel wave. "Blue Moon" was their biggest hit in 1961 but they some other songs such as "Heartaches" & "My Melancholy Baby".

Doo Wop was going strong back then. That song was more up-beat and I remember when I first heard that record on American Bandstand when Dick Clark asked the kids to grade new songs, and this one got a high mark. Doo Wop was popular and guys that couldn't afford instruments used their voices. The more instruments got included Doo-Wop faded out and I hate that because I LOVED Doo-Wop!

You are correct -- Doo Wop is poor man's music -- street corner harmony is forced to use the voices to stand in for horns, piano, guitars and percussion.
