At a Memorial Day concert held in a local cemetery in 1999, the musicians on the bandstand played the Armed Forces Medley, highlighting the various branches of the services, inviting active and past members to stand and join in. I watched as Army veterans stood and waved their hands to their tune. The same happened when the Navy's music was played, and was repeated for the Air Force as well as the Coast Guard. All the participants had stood, tapping their feet and waving their arms in time with the music and looking around at the others standing. When they played the Marine Corps Hymn, I stood immediately to military attention; eyes to the front, chin high, stomach in, shoulders well back, the thumbs of my closed hands along the outer seam of my trousers, and my feet at a 45 degree angle with the heels touching. When the Marine Hymn ended, I sat down and asked a family member if she had seen any other Marines stand during the abbreviated rendition. She said "No, you were the only one who stood." At that time, in that place, I represented the ENTIRE United States Marine Corps, past and present, and had followed my training, which said to stand at attention whenever I heard our hymn to honor the Corps and my brethren. I will never forget that concert. P.S., Active service from 1965 to 1969. 0311; two combat tours in Vietnam; First MarDiv, FMF-PAC; 2/5, 2/7, and 1/27.

In my comment above, I was referring to the fact that England established the 13 original colonies that eventually became the first U.S. states. Hence, the term "mother country" for England. During most of our history, the U.S. and the UK have been very close allies.
@raybeck25839 жыл бұрын
+Texas Son The USA & the UK need to remain allies. What a lot of Americans forget is that as you point out, the first states were colonies which were established by the Brits. Few US Marines know and even fewer Greeks, that the Marine's Hymn celebrates the very first joint Greek and American military cooperation. It took place in 1805 and resulted in the release of 308 Americans held hostage for ransom by pirates. The reference to American Marines in action on "the shores of Tripoli” commemorates the attack on a stronghold of the Pasha of Tripoli (Libya), who along with the rulers of three other petty North African states, Morocco, Tunis and Algiers, practiced piracy against commercial shipping in the Mediterranean in the eighteenth and nineteenth century.

My favorite story about the marine hymn has to be from the battle of the chosin reservoir. As the 7th and 5th Marine regiments made their way back to Hagaru Ri after breaking out of Chinese encirclement at Yudam Ni, British Royal Marines from 41 Commando pushed out onto the heights on either side of the road leading into the 1st Marine Divisions perimeter at Hagaru Ri. After pushing off a minor Chinese assault attempting to ambush the convoy making its way down the road, 41 Commando watching on the hills above, as two companies from the 7th battalion, dismounted, got into parade formation, and marched into the perimeter singing the Marine Hymn. All within sight of their commander Oliver P. Smith. The fact that scene has never made it to the silver screen is a travesty.

When I was in Pensacola I trained with marines and really enjoyed the time with those guys. One particular school was capped with a ceremony and squids sang "anchors away' and Devil Dogs sang their Hymn at the end.. It's a long story about how the class started with 20+ Marines and 1 graduated with us as the entire class was disciplined and held back two weeks. No biggie but it left one guy who was more marine than singer. One of the instructors, a staff sergeant rode his ass all week before telling him he's all by himself, and all kind of crap messing with him. Well graduation is over, Navy done sang and then out of nowhere the staff sergeant who was dressed to the tee stood beside him and sang the Marines Hymn and it was the bad ass shit I seen and heard. Cuz had the pipes and laid down the best version I ever heard. My wife was crying and all the other ladies were also crying. He didn't leave that Marine hanging

I get choked up too easily listening to this inspiring and patriotic march. My older brother Bill was a total badass, looking like a "hippie" Dennis Hopper from the 1969 movie "Easy Rider", and riding a chopper just like his and hair down to his shoulders. Bill eventually moved out and got married. Then one day in 1972 Bill made an appearance at his former Junior High School (which I was attending at the time) and when he walked down that hallway in his Dress Blues it just blew me away! I couldn't believe how much respect I had for my brother (I was five years younger and was kind of a "Cindy Brady" to him, telling on him when he got into some s**t and he always let me have it and didn't want me hanging around him) but all that vanished in the instant I saw him in his uniform - he was a MARINE! Everyone in the school treated him like a King and all my classmates were so impressed it was one of the most memorable days of my life. Endless thanks to all who put their lives on the line to serve and protect the rest of us!
