This way of doing a Mario & Sonic crossover mightve disappointed many, but it's what got me into Mario, Sonic, and the Olympics (I didn't recognize any of those three words until my parents got me the Vancouver version one year for Christmas along with a Wii). I was always excited whenever a new one came out. I hope you try the rest of the games!

I'm legit very glad we got the Olympics instead* of a traditional crossover. Mario & Sonic's rivalry is something that existed outside* of their canon, so to try to jam the two together in a game? I mean what's the point? Sonic's mechanics wouldn't complement Mario's style, nor vice versa, the end result would just be a half Mario / half Sonic, half baked! But the Olympics? That makes all of the sense of the world! The whole point of the Olympics is to bring people from all over the world, or worlds* together! And since the premise it's so goofy, they can actually* have fun with it, rather than trying to fit a circle in a square.

Rumor has it that SEGA actually tried to pitch a traditional crossover to Nintendo multiple times, but they were rejected. This would be why SEGA rejected Sonic's inclusion into Brawl at first, and then approved it after* Nintendo greenlit the Olympics game.

@@julianx2rl I think it's fair to say that Miyamoto wanted something more original for a crossover rather than something traditional like a plat-former. Given the Mario + Rabbids crossover years later, I could see why Nintendo wanted something more unique which is how we got the Olympic games instead.

so you can have mario and rabbids , but mario and sonic would be pointless ? brother the selling point is literally just their IPs existing together , any platforming style would suffice. we could have a 2D game where you switch between sonic and mario to reach different areas using character-specific abilities , we could have a 3D open world that explores the world of sonic and mario , we could have a racing a game that merges elements from both series , the possibilities are endless !

@@ganges2264 I think you missed the entire point. Nintendo likely very much knows how important a crossover is between Mario and Sonic, but they wanted the game to be something different. Like how often do we get a 3D Mario Platformer? Not often. And it makes it clear they don't want to over saturate the Mario 3D Platformer which is why they do different spin off games every year.

13:56. Unpopular opinion, but I prefer this game over Mario Party. Maybe it's because I'm not really into Mario Party, or 8 and 9 aren't really as fun as they used to be when I was younger, but M&S 2008 is a game I can come back to, and have fun despite it being a workout (which I don't mind) and the controls (which I basically mastered, seriously it's not that hard). Wii Sports is basically goated, and it will never be toped, but M&S 2008, in my opinion, is still pretty dang good. Obviously, the ones after are 10X better (except for the Wii U entries, those games are abysmal), but M&S 2008, will always hold a special place in my heart.

Crazy how it was literally just the other day it dawned on me that the Mario & Luigi series would be a great fit for a character like Sonic! Just imagine the crazy adventure they'd go on together and how it could introduce some cool new attacks and switch up both the battles and the biomes they traverse. I was hoping to see others push this idea, just didn't expect to see it so soon🥹.

Man, I remember spending so much time playing the Bicycle, Fencing, Dream Running, Figure Skating, Skeleton, and Dream Snowboarding events from the first two DS games, both solo and with my siblings and cousins. And the party and story modes! Even if they’re just minigame collections, the first two were legit really fun and well-designed ones. Can’t speak on the later ones since I haven’t play them tho…

Here’s hoping we maybe get Mario & Sonic Sports, Party, or RPG. It would probably be neat to see this lineup of three past Mario RPGs from the past lead up to some combo of them in the form of Mario & Sonic’s next outing together. HOWEVER, the Mario sports series have gotten pretty stale, and even Nintendo Switch Sports went very poorly. I think they’re going to, or should, need some big selling point for the audience to give them another chance.

At least the commercials for the first game are incredibly funny and interesting at the same time. Mario and Sonic's relationship as rivals should have been the way it is in these commercials in the actual game. And Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games on DS actually has a cool story mode. The story isn't anything groundbreaking, but you actually have several cool cities to freely explore. These cities feel lived in and interesting, and there are little tidbits about the Olympic Games to discover, as well as new areas to unlock with certain characters.

this is exactly why i prefer the DS version. no exhausting movements that doesn't even make the characters move sometimes (you don't have to break your touch screen by the way, just be consistent) and there's more dream events. oh and also i guess the bonus games are more fun but i don't like all of them personally. also in the mission mode (this video didn't mention it being a thing in the wii version) after doing all the missions you have to beat a character in "top condition" which means they just had coffee.

I haven't played these games in forever, and didn't have the interest to get the remainder of the series after playing a couple entries (The original on the Wii, and the original Winter Games on the DS). I did get to experience it again and actually move my body more, when I found out there's an arcade version at a somewhat local Dave & Buster's and enjoyed my time, a couple months ago.

I remember back when I was at gamestop. I was trying to get Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter games. But the man who gave me the game accidentally gave me the wrong disc. It was the first game of the series. I didn't realize it until a few months later. 😂 And i still have it to this day.

Please, PLEASE, cover the sequels I beg you. Overall, I agree that the first entry is the weakest among the Wii titles (bland minigames, janky controls. There's a reason why I return to this title the least amongst the three). But the next two titles fleshed out the concept by miles, and are by far my favorites out of the series. You won't be disappointed, trust me.

I used to play this game a lot when I had a Wii Mini (yes, I had the inferior version of the Wii console) and I'd always play Javelin Throw and Trampoline a lot, and I even did Dream Fencing with 4 Wii Remotes by myself. Now looking back on this game, I feel like this game isn't that good when compared to it's sequels. My biggest grip with the first game is the lack of content and overall replay value since there's only 24 events with most of them lacking any depth and they get boring fast, and Circuit mode feels undermined by the fact that it can be played by four players, and there's only 16 circuits and Mission mode has a total of 96 missions that don't have any merit to them and are oddly programmed since they show a lot of cut corners and they have bullcrap objectives like perfecting hurdle jumps in 110m Hurdles despite the Hurdles being hard to jump over. Another grip is that it feels unfinished, since the graphics look quite bad with washed-out colours, and there's only 16 characters with some obvious ommissions, and some cutscenes are programmed in the wrong places, such as the team events not having the Multiplayer Award Ceremony in single player, and the Losing Ceremony and Single Player Award Ceremony only being seen in Single Player. There's also Single Sculls, 100m and the Swimming events not having a split-screen for multiplayer despite them being Racing events, and the Gallery mode being just lame minigames and not having any data, character bios, or a collection of old Mario or Sonic games and comics to read or play. In fact, according to TCRF, there was originally going to be more in the game, but got cut such as 10 more events that didn't make it and 4 more playable characters, and some events got revamped such as Dream Fencing originally having points but got changed to having health as hit points instead, and it was likely that there would be more missions and maybe more game modes that would make up for the lack of depth. Honestly, this game is quite interesting, but I wish it was better with less fincky controls and more content, would've been a great game but it is what it is.

My favorite one is Mario and Sonic at the winter Olympic games, i played on the DS lite ✨ I love the story mode, replayed it a lot! 😂 love the challenges and love the multi-player mini games like bingo. I used to play with my siblings on multi-player and play 3 matches of bingo so we can play all the mini games against each other, I usually won 💅 Ah good times with that game 😄 we played it as much as Mario party, and I definitely think Mario and Sonic at the winter Olympic games is more fun then the first Olympic games 💯

This is kinda off topic but anyone notice how the colors seem to appear washed out in alot of Wii games. I wonder if it was a style choice of the time or a hardware thing. Like the Gamecube didnt have this issue and its the weaker (not a whole lot weaker) system but still boast colors that seem more vibrant, so that leads me to think it cant have anything to do with power. But I'm not a tech guy so thats just me spitballing, its just something I find fascinating

I remember playing this one for the first time back in 2015 and thought it was boring. I love Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games way more. I played those before I played the first game. London 2012 is my favorite out of all 6 games lol. I didn't really play the tokyo one. It doesn't really look all that interesting.

Never been a fan of crossovers outside of Marvel vs Capcom. It was such a random partnership at the time, but it was beautiful. All the crossovers that people say "make sense" tend to ironically less sense than those random ones. Two good things don't always need to join. So god help me if people ask for Pokemon x Digimon or something
