Hi there! I would elaborate on the following points: Damaged environment: Caused by the conflagration (a great fire), the air is polluted, everything smells like plastic, the moon is cracked, trees in are in a museum, large oil spills that are alight are noticed across the ocean, the earth has a weakened capacity to support life. Food sources: Unnatural, Food comes from the Laboratory, Meat is grown through a scientific process, a variety of food is scarce. You can only eat was is available. Animals: Wild and domesticated animals are extinct, Insects - only flies, fleas and cockroaches have survived, Bug juice (with dead flies in it) is what people use to get drunk, Flies are as big as a fist, People eat flies when food is scarce. Family: Adults do not care for children. Older children or traders care for younger ones. Propaganda: Information is controlled, The masses cannot read, People are only taught what is necessary for their trade. Control: Everyone is given a mark, the machine controls your fate-mate, trade and tracks your whereabouts. Curfew: control when people can come and go. Society broken into classes: Mangerians, Posh, Traders and Rejects

Hey, I would consider the following points when discussing the theme of control: Control amongst the elite: The Mangerians maintain control and have power by using the Machine to keep the population in check - they require everyone to get branded with a “mark” at birth. The mark at the base of everyone’s spine is a unique code. It is imprinted on each Individual by the machine, and controls their every move, every action and even determines the course of their lives in terms of career, life partner and social status. No one is free to make any choices, everything is decided for them. The Mangerians maintain the appearance of democracy through a fake voting system, but there is no democracy at all, it is all a façade - we see this when Ettie mentions that each person has 20 votes and must cast a vote for each of the 20 candidates. The Magerians maintain control by deciding who the Guardians of certain departments will be amongst themselves - they decide who makes all the decisions. Parliament should be the place where the freely elected representatives of the people serve to create a peaceful and ordered society, not where severe laws are passed to control the populace. The population is always threatened with Savage City (a prison island of sorts) which deters them from stepping out of line. The Mangerians eliminate anyone who threatens their control by sending them to die in Savage City (Example: Kitty’s parents). Ettie mentions that no-one returns from there. The locusts are recruited to maintain control and “squash” any threats that may pop up - for example the prisoners that set the tree museum and market alight, which caused a riot. They were captured by the locusts and Cockroach ordered the Locust warden to “get rid” of them. Control amongst the poor: Handler Xavier controls the orphans and forces them to participate and steal in ‘ the game’, as part of his petty thieving and tricking of people to gain a profit.
