You may want to see some of the videos where he is being interviewed. I used to think he was a very caring man, dedicated to helping people. He has said in interviews he does not give a fuck about the interview. For him, it's all about getting that portrait. He is in it for the photos. It's his art project. That is coming from him. Yet at other times he speaks about bringing awareness to issues that result in so many damaged people. He has seemed genuinely emotional about it at times, sounding like he is about to cry. But I don't recall ever seeing a single tear. I tried looking through his interview with Koncrete to find the parts I speak of. I think that's the interview where he talked about the portraits being the sole reason for the project. But it seems like the video might have been edited and parts removed. Comments are now disabled. I'm not saying you should see him as a bad person. But I would take it all with a grain of salt, and keep a critical eye on him.

@maymacbell39832 жыл бұрын
Mark you are the most powerful interviewer I’ve ever come across, your calming and non judgemental voice fits perfectly because you manage somehow to get people to tell their own stories without too much directive from you, but when you do have input you manage to get their stories in chronological order which makes their stories more harrowing, it makes us the viewers understand how that person has ended up in the position they’re in, if you didn’t dig into their back stories people would just view them as drug addicts, scum bags, criminals you get the picture, but what you do is give those people a voice, the invisibles, the human beings that other human beings don’t see as human, you’re making the world a better place, you’re opening eyes and making us see that throwing change into a cup is not longer sufficient, we need to do more! Mark to say you do that all yourself is absolutely astounding, I think you’re a genius, the way you have it all set up, someone sat on a chair in their environment with a simple backdrop makes the interviews more powerful, and your black and white photos are compelling, you’ve opened my eyes, you’ve made me feel like I need to do more, I need to make change in my own life, and want to help others. I can’t say how much you’ve done Mark because there are no words to describe the impact you’re having on the world, it’s so simple yet so powerful, I could watch your content all day, I’ve told my sister who is a criminal justice social worker that she should watch your videos because I believe that what you’re doing is teaching us more than what any university book could, I love how raw it is. Mark thank you so much for bringing light to such a controversial topic, I absolutely love you.

I don’t know if Mark realizes it but he is basically an ethnographer. And a very good one at that. I have recorded the life history of Navajo family and the memoirs of a Holocaust survivor. The Navajo family I ended up helping quite a bit here and there financially. It’s been over 20 years and our connection is pretty amazing. But it does get a little dicey trying to navigate the line between ethnographer and friend. I also understand how Mark has to step back every now and then from the work. When I was interviewing the Holocaust survivor it got so heavy that at times I had to take a break. Anyway, the way Mark does it all on his own is amazing. Dude, you are a wizard! I’ve watched the WV inbred family a few times. It’s one of those things I think about pretty often for some reason. I think it’s because you spend your whole life hearing jokes about southerners and incest, but you never actually see what that looks like. And when you do, it’s beyond what you could have ever imagined in the most horrifying, disturbing way. It’s so jarring. And incredibly sad. And you suddenly realize the Whitakers are just one example of likely very many in the Appalachia region and elsewhere. Changes the lens you view the world through.

Hey Mark, I watch your channel fairly frequently and in most cases watch to the end because it's often that the most insight often comes from the process of telling stories. We all have a canned version of ourselves and our friends are the ones that get past that and still accept us, and most of your subjects need a friend, so the least I can offer as a passive audience is to do that - give them a chance.

I keep commenting! It's just that this interview is your best so far, I feel like. The interview Mark did on the woman that molested her son was so powerful to me. Part of me loathed her so much, but to see how all of her life brought her to that point, and she hit the lowest of low to actually involve her son in her own disfunction (which is despicable), to see her regret and the reconciliation and healing that happened in her son's heart. It was beautiful, it was honest, and it was something I had never seen before. I appreciate that he talks to people who we may never hear from, in such an honest way.

My 46 year old son is an addict and you can tell when he's lying when he opens his mouth. I'll start letting him talk to me, but this last time, he said some of the most outrageous things I know are outright lies, but this time I called him out on it. I stopped giving him anything long ago, and he doesn't even know where I live. He said some really terrible things to me , vile things, and I blocked him. It occurred to me I may never see him on this earth again. He had to run clear across the country because he violated his probation. 10 years worth. It's hard for parents. You remember that child, how cute they were, how much you love them. It's so heartbreaking 💔😢

My first time watching SWU, I understood completely the message behind his videos. It is absolutely educational. I've grown up around interesting people similar to those Mark has interviewed. And to his point of finding out through their stories that they have personal triumphs & accomplishments unbeknownst to society due to their mental health issues caused by child hood trauma that they may have been overlooked because of their current circumstances, whoever it is that you end up meeting at that point of their life. It is very humbling, and beautiful to see that through our shared human experiences no matter what level we dwell at in society the struggles, and the capacity of learning from each other is superb.
