Yes, I heard about them maybe a couple of years ago. I'm Jamaican and we also have maroon. I had heard a Jamaican maroon speaking the Kromanti language that he said was passed down from his ancestors. So I became curious and started searching and came across the maroons of Suriname.

I 'm Jamaican of African descent, and yes, I do know about the maroons of Suriname for many years now but not enough to claim in overwhelm terms their interesting history. Though the maroon communities in Jamaica were among the first to be established, those that came after were somewhat touched by outside influences and certainly the ones in Suriname, knocked me over with a difference in that, because of the symbolic retention of the Africa of ancient. I'm certainly drawn to their dances as well and music which are so nostalgic; they brought me closer to the homeland in a fundamental way, reminiscent of what it was really the past. In addition, I do feel a lot is meaningful here to know intensely and in depth about them because out of most settlements in the West, theirs seemed to be the ones that were not infiltrated much by the colonial influences of what ought to be among others. Meaning that everything remained as it were only related to what they encountered and discovered in new forest of their conquest to survive being enslaved. So, the fact that they went so far and deep into the amazon forest, to establish their own communities so many miles away from the frontline establishments of Colonial Slave Traders, must have kept them being most unique in the artifacts and original language expressions of the past that are not infiltrated with modifications that have touched others elsewhere, including, of course certain areas in Africa itself. In that way and unlike anywhere else they're very unique and a wholesome treasure to learn from. To connect the dots and I like what the Surinamese man say, we must learn our history from ours, and not only from the ancestors of the colonials. With that stated, Wode Maya, your tour has brought me even closer to know more in respect to the people there. One Love❤🙏🏿.

Central & South America has a large amount of our people we need to reconnect with. I went to Cartagena Colombia 🇨🇴 and it felt like Mombasa Kenya 🇰🇪. Almost everyone looked like me that made it feel like I was home. The amount of time and difficulty it took to get to the village, tells you that the Maroons in Suriname, just like those in Jamaica, meant that their freedom was to be taken by any means necessary. They refused to make it easy for anyone to enslave them again once tasting freedom!

As someone who was born and raised in Amsterdam, i've grown up with Ghanians--now living in NYC for the past 12 years, I can count Ghanians to my circle of friends also. Needless to say i am extremely excited about you taking the opportunity to show the world one of the greatest countries ever. There is no place in the world like it. I am always amazed about how many "cultured" people still don't know about Suriname in 2023 (!), I was raised to take an interest in geography aside from what we are being taught in school and I thank my dad for that. Suriname is indeed west Africa in South America, and it is our duty to further explore our connection and preserve it. I've been to Zanzibar in Africa, Ghana is definitely next. Obviously, this post shows you 've never been to Africa, even if you 've not been to Africa, try to interact with those who did, you would know that you can not receive a warmer welcome anywhere in the world than Africa... not a boast. What you should be writing and it would make more sense is how to ensure that every African in diaspora has an African passport, so that African diasporas like you and your descendants would never need a visa to visit the mother land, not warm welcome, which you brought with you from Africa.

I’m a white dude here living in Benin, Africa. I’m from Houston, Texas which has a large African American population and is near Louisiana also known for the Creole people of French/African ancestry. I just want to say how much I thoroughly enjoyed this video seeing Africans connecting with African Diaspora and how similar & connected they are even though the distances are vast! For example, here in Cotonou, Benin I see so many similarities to New Orleans, Louisiana- from the food to the blending of French and African traditions. We live on an amazing planet and the connections between all humans are strong. I agree the travel restrictions between African countries and African diaspora regions are too strict & expensive and prevents people from coming together. Borders Are Scars On the Face of the Planet!

Beautiful people, we say gidi digi too from igbo tribe of Nigeria, infact we have proverb on it. "Gidi gidi bu ukwu eze" it means fast but in the proverb it means a different thing. The location of the Maroon villages, shows the resilience of the people to survive and be free from the captors. Thank you Maya for showing us Suriname.

Very interesting that the Chef mentioned "papa" as part of their traditional cuisine. In South Africa we also call our porridge 'papa' or pap, except that ours is made from maize meal. Fascinating similarities.

16:58 People actually use both adoo (adu) and atoo (atu). It depends on where you're from. And even within Saamaka or N'Djuka communities. My people are from below the Lake (stuwmeer) and we say "Atu". 24:36 Powisi is what you guys call Peacock in English.
