Members of progressive rock band The Mars Volta, Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala sit down with Zane Lowe to discuss the inspiration behind their seventh studio album, ‘The Mars Volta'.
The Mars Volta discuss what progressive rock means to them and how they conveyed it on this album. Omar and Cedric discuss what it took to get back together after falling out in 2012 and how their emotional reunion shaped the new album. “Blacklight Shine” is the first song on the album and is accompanied by a short-film, the goal of this song and others is to make you dance and cry at the same time. The two also discuss their experience in 'At The Drive-In' and mental health.

all it is seriously, is being skinny. when you are overweight, which most older people are with their dad bods, that puts a serious toll on your organs and over time you start to look older. skinnier people just look younger. You can't be that skinny and also drink alcohol or eat bad food - so Omar just lives a very healthy life and it shows.

@@ErnestoMike It's not that he looks horrible, in my opinion, but that he is sitting next to Omar who looks like he stopped aging after 2005 or so. Cedric is a 48 year old man, and I find that's what he looks like. His beard has grayed and he has some sun damage on his cheeks and around his eyes. That's it, really. Things also haven't been easy for Cedric and his family over the last 5 or so years. Stress has an immense toll on your body. If he does look horrible, which I don't think he does... it would be understandable.

The bashfulness at 51:10 is SO endearing. To think that musical magicians that have been legendary for SO long and still have that level of bashfulness is crazy to me.

I think part of the reason is that their music is so idiosyncratic. since the beginning they never really expected people to like it

Wow, I’m only 14 min in, and I would have never thought I needed this. Talking about fatherhood, family and friendship in such a healthy way. TMV got me through some hard times and I didn’t realize they still are.

I was taken aback by the shortened songs released as singles before the album released. I was amazed how concise and catchy they were. It reminded me a lot of Delouced with their short memorable songs. But, really I am just so happy to have a new Mars Volta album. Thanks guys!

I see a lot of negative comments about the album, so I want to say, while the album isn’t what I would expect or the direction I would imagine wanting to hear, I think people are too harsh. It’s an interesting album, and it was the one they needed to make in this moment. Not every album is for everyone in every moment. This one might not ever be for you. But that’s ok.

Exactly. I didn’t like the album on first listen, because it wasn’t what I thought I wanted - I wanted mad guitar freak outs. But I’ve listened to it 5 more times now and love it

Extraordinary interview, the place where Cedric and Omar are right now is reflected in the new album. One of the best albums of Mars Volta discography, slow and energic, minimal and complex at the same time.

I always loved the Mars Volta lyrics and AtDI before that. The poetic feel they always have. "Starting with gibberish and then putting words to it" (17:12) answered, at least in part, how the lyrics come about and sound so weird and enlightening at the same time. Thanks for taking up Mars Volta again!

The Weird Thing is, that the last 4 LPs - incl. this one - were released exactly in the first phase of breaking ups, the last Relationship ended abruptly and pitiful after 12 years sadly. But again, your Music helped me really out to get over my most difficult Time. Everything on the new Record is fabulous, even the Release Date was like perfectly chosen and all of my sadness somehow became as Golden as the First Month of Autumn. That's where I can really Appreciate such a thought through Art Concept even with mindful coloration. And being the Legasthenic I am or was I can (again) confirm the Matching Artwork in Relation to the Music. Seen You in Berlin 2000 something on the Bedlam Tour and was soo Happy not only seeing you Live, but also one of my Idol Drummers (from which there have been 3 only in TMV alone from 6 total) Mr. Thomas Pridgen. I Loved the Chaos and it's Timing but I'm really Glad you have come back after this long Time and try to get Tickets for June in Germany. God Bless You All.
