Talk about a CURSED ALBUM like sheeeeesh. Ouija boards, paranormal activity, accidents, all the stops of a haunted house. Seriously, I got a little spooked while I was filming and editing this. My camera shut off, had issues with my SD card, and I also heard a weird noise of which I could not find the source and I literally didn't even listen to the album bc I was scared, I just did all the research but here we are huh
I am curious about this album but I honestly for some reason cannot bring myself to fully listen to it, I am a kind of spiritual person and it just ain't sitting right. I also find the stories of the artists themselves really interesting which does make me want to dive more into their discographies, which is a lot because the leads have been in quite a few different bands. Prog-Rock isn't a genre I'm too familiar with but this did inspire a little deep dive for me into the culture and its wild stories I have found thus far, maybe I can make another few videos in this style if that sounds interesting.
ANYWAY love y'all see you next Thursday

Bedlam is a 10/10 album. Hits me somewhere in the soul, it can be very dark if you are susceptible to such things, but with the right mindset it's simply a beautiful work of art that seems to reach out to it's listeners. I believe anything harmful to do with it is sealed within, and toothless now

I met my girlfriend in 2016, having owned TBiG for a few years. Her nickname online has the surname BedLam, and has done since way before I met her. The street number of my address is ten times hers, our Mothers' maiden names are one letter different, and my bicycle combination lock code in 2017 - factory set - was the last four digits of her family's landline phone number since the 1960s. She got a tattoo of an AK47 firearm on her left forearm, so I designed a similarly random tattoo for my opposite forearm, with five random digits in it; 40732. It reads GR_NDM__H_RF_CKER (I went to edit this reply but it failed, letting me know that youpube disallowed it due to supposedly including this "code") in the font on Grandmaster Flash's 1976 album, and references the fact that she has grandchildren (I'm a grand mfer who sleeps with a grandmother). I since learned through an online associate, that § 40732 is a firearm sales code in the USA. Also, the 4 being the letter A, is the third character from the left, and the K is 3rd from the right. So the tattoo could be read as AK overlaid upon 40-7. The 4,0,7 is three digits and the 32 is two, fractally referencing the 3,2. Of course, I hadn't realised that it's actually "Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five". So, did my subconscious design these aspects or some other entity? I'm irreligious, but consider the possibility that I may be incorrect.

10+ years later rhis album remains among my favorites and is a cyclical subject of my obsession. Sans any spiritual implications, the musicianship and audio engineering is masterful. The compositions are among the band's finest. There's a following of "horror" related music out there, but little of it is successful at illiciting a genuine sense of fear like this album, and I'm suprised this album is not considered among horror-esque styles. Truly a provocative record in prog-rock that sheds light on aspects of our universe never meant to be understood. My favorite TMV album, although Comatorium is a formidable second and a first for many other fans.

Huge Mars Volta fan. I was listening this album on repeat when it came out. Heard this story about the ouija board and didn't doubt it. It sounded a lot like a story Geezer from Black Sabbath told about how Ozzy bought an old grimoire and used it. Geezer was asleep and woke up one night to see a shadow person hovering over him. He stated how it felt from then on the music seemed to have come from another place. Mars Volta and Black Sabbath may have created great music but it definitely took a toll on their lives. I'd recommend the advice given by Sir Christopher Lee and don't ever get involved in the occult.

@@howdyimvictoria Oh yeah, huge TMV fan. Not my personal favorite album of their's but, always found the story fascinating and creepy. Not sure if you already know but, Tool has some similar stories. Danny (the drummer) is very into the occult and even talks about summoning a demon at one point during during the recording of one of the albums as I recall. I don't fully remember the story but, remember it being similarly eerie to some of the things Cedric and Omar mentioned about their experience recording this album. Thanks for sharing the other video! I'll definitely give it a watch.

The Mars Volta is the greatest prog rock band that has ever been and ever will be. Frances the Mute is my favorite followed closely by Deloused, then it's Amputechture and then Goliath. The reason is simple: Jon Theodore. Cedric admitted later in life that firing Jon Theodore was the biggest mistake he had made with the band.

@dpclerks09
@dpclerks09 4 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure the "protection" that they put into the album was for THEM, not the listener. From what I've read, it seems like they somehow "trapped" the curse within the album, and when the listener experiences the album, they are the lucky ones to receive that "gift". They basically deflected a curse away from themselves, which they brought upon themselves by playing with something they probably shouldn't have, and onto their fans.

Wonderful video, Victoria! I love this album with my life and it is my favorite from them since I first listened to it (and The Mars Volta) at my 14s. I knew about the heavy occult weight the album had behind it but not this whole context. It is quiet good. I'm the kind to be very skeptical about this things but I kinda feel the eerie vibes from the album and I personally love it. It soothes(sayer?) my restless mind. My theory could be that they were manifesting all this. Poltergeist kinda deal. Suggestion can be very powerful and more when a lot of people are involved and aware of it. It is as fantastical of a possibility as what you told but still. Fun to make theories around it. Already subbed! and also your eye shadow looks so cute! Orange is for sure your colour, girl :3

It's hard to find mars volta friends in public let alone in LA but last summer I got locked up and remember hearing the verse " Never heard a man speak like this man before ".. then bedlam in Goliath took over my thoughts and by the end of the day lo and behold I meet a cook who's an extreme mars volta fan even had it tattooed. He had been locked up for a while and didn't know about the upcoming album in which he freaked out because everything they release a new album he's always locked up. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. The songs connect with me in a spiritual level that I’ve never experienced before. It’s dark. It’s intense. It’s long and winding but all connects in the end and is beautifully put together. I remember smoking a blend of light hallucinogenic herbs and feeling like I was transported into the album. Every time I closed my eyes I was in the desserts, the towns, I saw the people. Weird masses of flesh dressed as people. It’s a beautiful album.

I didn't even watch this video, honestly I don't even want to hear anyone talk about it, I just wanted to find a venue to say what I'm about to say. I love this fucking album, it's wonderful, but I have experienced some really weird shit while listening to it. At first, nothing happened, I probably listened to it on repeat for like a couple months, but one day I was listening to it in the kitchen while washing dishes, my twins were about 5 at the time, eating lunch at their little table in the living room. At one point in one of the songs, I can't remember which one now, they both started screaming as soon as the song said the word God. I think the lyrics were "stuff a voice inside of God". I ran in there, and one of their plates was on the other side of the room, food everywhere, like it was flung. I know, they're kids, but they never just threw plates. They were well mannered about sitting down and eating, and they both were really upset. I knew the alleged story behind the album when I bought it, so it kind of put me on edge for a while. Since then, I tried to listen to it a few times and just weird stuff has happened, bad news phone calls, ect. Small stuff that I can't really remember. I stopped for a while, then tried a few years later to listen to it alone in the car twice. Both times my car broke down. I haven't listened to it since. I've never deleted it from my iTunes, and it's weird to have an album that I like so much and can't bring myself to listen to. I'm honestly a little scared of it. I don't know what you believe, and maybe it's all coincidence, but I'm too old to tempt the universe anymore. Take this story as you will. Call me silly or crazy or just plain stupid, but as bad as I want to, I don't think I'll ever try to listen to it again. I haven't deleted it because I guess it's just kind of a novelty for me, just to have it, like a strange curation.
@dpclerks09
@dpclerks09 4 ай бұрын
You need to delete it. Every single person that bought the album, and read about the "protection" element of it is completely misunderstanding what that means. The "protection" placed on the album was for THE BAND, not the listener. They effectively diverted a curse away from themselves, which they brought upon themselves by playing with something they shouldn't have, and ONTO THE LISTENER, THEIR FANS. PLEASE DELETE THAT ALBUM IF YOU LOVE YOUR CHILDREN.

I love The Mars Volta, Omar and Cedric have been my creative hero’s since at the drive-in. I think Frances the mute is their best album, but bedlam is pretty dope. I also have has some crazy spooky experiences with that album. I bought the cd the first day it came out. I waited to get home to listen to it, because I wanted to not be interrupted while o was listening. I put the cd in my computer because my speakers where badass at the time. When I finished listened to it I burned the cd to my computer library. Later that night I was invited to a party by my friend Daniel. Soon as I got in the car I put the cd in and was jaming the song Askepios because I thought that song is a vibe to say the least. Right at the part where CEDRIC says “help me come alive” the cd stops playing, and strays making a sound like you hit the eject button but nothing came out. I tried to skip tracks but it wasn’t reacting to me hitting the skip button, so then I to eject it and it would not come out. The cd never came out of the CD player, and I had never had issues with my CD player before I put that cd in. About 2 months later I was in a car accident that totaled my car, with the bedlam cd still stuck in the CD player. True fucking story. Also the mars volta is back together as a band and they sound better than ever. Love the video sorry about the novel.

I got this cd the day it came out. We were living in Las Vegas and we had just come out of an almost 3yr battle with some entity my husband came home with, after a year in Iraq. We both felt something off about the entire work, we tossed it into a box and left it there. Oddly enough, we moved to El Paso TX in October '08. We spent 11 yrs in El Paso, our experience in EP were so intense, it almost seems impossible that we survived. I always knew something was up with that recording. Thank you for sharing this!!

I listened to this album heavily for a while because I love it but I too felt bad things happen when I listen…which sucks…These bad events seemed to coincide with my heavy listening of the Mars Volta in general so at first I just completely stopped listening to them. But I couldn’t keep away and now I listen to every other album but this one. I remember reading about this album being cursed but not thinking twice about it until after these events. I will admit I was at a pretty low time in my life anyway during this and have drunkenly listened to it since with no known negative effects. But for the longest time I made it a point to not listen to it anytime something important was coming up or was nervous about something. The weirdest part is I completely ignored this album at first since I just didn’t like it at all. Then after hearing some songs it slowly grew on me to the point it became one of my favorites, like it drew me in. I listened to the song Metatron on NYE 2023 and I think everything is ok, but can’t say the same for the world around me. I am not religious or superstitious but was raised both. Also, drugs were not involved. Could it be the power of suggestion? I like to think of it as just a bad coincidence. Anyone else? PS. Hopefully this is my last edit, sections of the comment kept disappearing.

I would vacuum my floor in my room and go out for a walk and come home to find pewter figurines on my floor. stuff that neither me nor my grandmother recognized at all. she never went into my room either, especially when I was gone. one other time there was just a flower on the floor in there too. a few other things besides pewter figures but I can't recall all of them. it seemed to only happen in my room too. wish I could remember everything that was left but I do remember that there was a flaw with every one of them. like a wizard figurine was one of them and the staff was broken off of it. of course grandma was an avid ouija board user and a believer of the paranormal, but she had no idea what the music I was listening to was or what it was about.

SOOOOO I have the vinyl with the Ouija board piece as well. Its a recording of something played backwards, and its super scary. I have showed it to multiple friends who've made me turn it off because it is quite unsettling. Pretty crazy story.

It’s an incredible album, best of TMV by far. I refrained myself to listen to it complete and / or track list order as weird things happen on the following days, so either I pick up my fav songs, or play it in random order

This album came out my graduating year of high school and at the time I was into really heavy music and this album just connected immediately with me. I have to say this album is like the yin Yang it’s extremely spiritual but if you are strong minded and do not practice the dark arts then it shouldn’t affect you

I don't believe in the spiritual part of it, but I've always found Bedlam to be one of the hardest albums to sit through. Even octohedron feels more "right" even though it feels wrong, too. After Deloused, Frances and Amputecture, it's hard not to see through their formula, and be unimpressed by the albums that followed. Until Noctourniquet, of course. That one gives me chills... higher than mountains... cavernous people...

Look into the deaths in and around Canyon Lake, Tx. Particularly the drownings. And how often bodies have been unrecoverd. The lake itself is a beautiful little secret in Texas. Growing up visiting it, we were warned that swimming was ok but to never dive. Because rarely people come back up.

I’m familiar with Radiohead but not super closely, and I haven’t checked out Outrun the sunlight but I will be now. Curious to know what you’d be interested in seeing as someone more familiar with them.

@@howdyimvictoria well I watched some of your covers (great!) and karna police would make a good addition to your collection. I've been digging outrun the sun light a lot since I heard their album terrapin and it's the first time I was introduced to soundscapes. Sober, I could close my eyes and visualize the album. I'm not really 'genre’ minded, yet there's something about this band and others, like tesseract and northlane, that can make visual instrumentals. Unfortunately for me I can't even snap my fingers to jingle bells. So, it's difficult to describe how the music makes me feel. You, however, seem to have a wealth of knowledge and passion for music. I thought maybe you can help me understand why I can see an entire visual narrative listening to an outrun the sunlight album but, regretfully, a Tom Jones (even electronic or jazz) album doesn't have the same effect. I appreciate you for following up.

Great video! I’m a huge mars volta fan and am currently buying all the individual records from their website. I got the bedlam of goliath on vinyl too. Have you ever listened to the album? If not i highly recvomend it, the energy on this album is absolutely visceral and punches your face in and knocks your teeth out from the first song to the last.

That’s cool! I’m really happy to see that fans of the band seem to like the video, as someone outside of the fan base I wanted to be respectful and just retell the story as I found it in my own way. I am working my way through the album now! Another subscriber made me an “intro to the Mars Volta” playlist and I’m making my through it! This album I might need some extra time with, as my paranoia gets the best of me lol

Hey awesome video! Really appreciate the effort you put into making rhe video and also cursing your audience X) Just wanted to correct something you mentioned in the video: The band member that died, Jeremy Ward, died of a heroin overdose, which caused Cedric and Omar to quit heroin but not drugs (they still smoked weed and did LSD and things like that). I think Cedric didn't completely quit drugs until 2009 when he joined the Church of Scientology

This reason is one of the reasons I don't fuck with ouija boards. It's the album that got me into The Mars Volta, my favorite band and the only "professional" concert I've ever been to, and I look up to it as a fantastic "easier to consume" TMV album. My 3 favorites in order are Frances, De-loused and Bedlam :) They're back now btw.

My biggest question is: Where is this curio shop in jerusalam? Sure, smaller shops can certainly ignore the rise of an online presence, or portentially it is no longer around since 2008. But with the rise of the internet and the necessity for businesses to have an online presence, you'd think that a curious fan visiting the city would certainly have found a "curio shop with taxidermied candle sticks" as Cedric mentions in one interview. That detail alone narrows the scope of where this thing was purchased considerably. The other thing is the history of talking boards and ouija itself. Were they used for long enough in Isreal/middle east/Levant to be considered "antique"? It would have to be a precursor to the current mass produced version, and not much is really known about these items (or maybe I'm wrong in that regard, I'm no historian nor antiquities expert). One creepy observation: that area of texas mentioned in the video is practically a straight-shot drive from El Paso, though a long one. It isn't hard to imagine that, if the story is true, Omar could have buried it there. (excepting his proclivity to travel internationally, of course)
