Absolutely love MTB. This is one of my main biographical songs. Toy Caldwell's voice just brings out that emotional feeling that those of us who have had their heart crushed can feel. They made flute playing cool much like Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull and like Kansas did with the violin. Their other songs "Fire on the Mountain" and "Heard it in a Love" are classic Southern Rock standards that you MUST check out. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention The Outlaws "Green Grass and High Tides".

So glad to see you react to this group! I saw them in concert in the summer of 1973 in Memphis, TN, the first rock band I ever got to hear live! They were the opening act for Mahavishnu Orchestra (a niche band if there ever was one), but MTB's self-titled album had dropped in April, and by the time of the concert this single was climbing the charts. As a result, the concert had at least as many fans of the opening act as were there for the main act. MTB was totally new to me at the time, and I remember being amazed at what a great show they put on. They were solid musicians and knew how to connect with the audience, and I knew they were the real deal right away. Thanks for reacting to one of the few bands I ever got to see live. YOU rock. as always.

Toy Caldwell (USMC 1966-69) wrote this about his fellow Marines getting "dear John" letters in Vietnam (1968-69). He was wounded in combat in 1968 and given the option of a medical discharge he declined and returned to his unit for the rest of his tour.

They called Toy the Thundering Thumb because he used his thumb in lieu of a guitar pick. And as an opera singer you’d probably appreciate this, but they actually toured with a floutist. That wasn’t a studio musician in the beginning. I’m from down South and I’ve played this song in cover bands most of my life. I could definitely see you fronting a band down here and owning this song.

Why are you singing over the music? If you want to sing, do a video of just you singing some song, but I find it annoying when anybody sings over a classic song! Sorry...don''t mean to step on your toes, but I gotta be honest! I also don't like the music being stopped for comments...make the comments after the song has finished!
