This is southern rock at it's finest. The flute solo at the beginning & end is great. Love their music from the 70's. Some of their other big hits were "Fire on the Mountain" & "Heard It in a Love Song". Southern rock fiddler Charlie Daniels did quite a few collaborations with them.

Marshall Tucker was a blind piano tuner who used the band's studio to restore and tune old pianos. The group never actually met the real Marshall Tucker. They were in a warehouse trying to come up with a name and one of them noticed that the door key to the warehouse had the name Marshall Tucker on it and he suggested that might be a good name, not knowing it was a real person. The real Marshall Tucker passed away in 2023 at the age of 99, and never got bitter at the group for using his name without his permission. When someone asked him about it, he said he didn't mind "as long as they kept making good music".

Toy Caldwell not only a great singer and guitarist but a bad ass decorated Marine coming back, with a Purple Heart, from Viet Nam requiring him to take pain killers for his injuries and this addiction led to his early death.

Take note that Toy picks the guitar with his thumb... fastest thumb in rock. He was a Marine wounded twice in Vietnam but refused to come home because he wanted to stay with his men. Gone now so RIP Brother.

When the band had an opportunity to open for the Allman Brothers Band, they had to pick a name on the spot. As it turns out the key that let them into the building they were going to be playing in had a keychain with the name Marshall Tucker on it so they decided they would use that name for that night, and the name stuck. The real Marshall Tucker was a blind man from South Carolina with God-given talent on the piano. The band paid tribute to him when he passed away in January 2023 at the age of 99. If you don't know of bands that use a flute in their music, check out some Jethro Tull.

I worked on a sit-com set back in the early 80's, and a friend of mine that was our sound tech traveled with Marshal Tucker Band for a couple of years as their sound man..of course they are called audio engineers now .just brings back alot of great memories...

This is one of my biographical songs. Everyone has had heartache, but there are times when it hurts so much you do want to act out what this song is about. They got their name from a rental receipt on a piano they were looking at in a rundown store, and later on they found the actual Marshall Tucker and struck up a friendship. Pretty please, do more MTB.
