Take a journey through time on the Marsing Grade of US Highway 95 in Owyhee County, Idaho! Filmed in late January, this drone footage showcases the breathtaking views of Newe Waippe Naokwaide Canyon (formerly Squaw Creek) and the fascinating remnants of the old highway, often called the ION (Idaho, Oregon, Nevada) highway.
Before the 1980s, this winding stretch of road was a nerve-wracking experience for drivers. The old Marsing Grade was infamous for its sharp curves, narrow lanes, and steep drop-offs-earning it a reputation as one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the region. Even with the breathtaking scenery, it was not for the faint of heart, especially during winter months or inclement weather.
In the 1980s, the Marsing Grade was significantly upgraded to improve safety and traffic flow. The modern route, engineered with broader curves and wider lanes, hugs the edge of the canyon and offers smoother travel while maintaining stunning views of the landscape. Although I couldn't pinpoint the exact year of construction, the new grade marked a turning point in making this section of US 95 far safer for motorists.
The video highlights the contrast between the old and new highways. You can still spot the remnants of the original road winding up the grade-a testament to the ingenuity (and boldness) of early road builders who tackled this rugged terrain.
