BJ, Motown was in Detroit Michigan, the city where almost all american cars were made. Detroit was nicknamed motortown, and Barry Gordy who start the recording studio in Detroit shortened it to Motown.

I love the awesome Marvelettes but you have to remember the girl group that paved the way for most girl groups to follow were The Shirelles. First African American group to hit #1 on Billboard with Will you Love me Tomorrow.

The Marvelettes was the first female vocal group on the Motown Records label to go all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with this song in 1961. The Supremes went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 three years later with Baby Love.

"Where Did Our Love Go" was the Supremes' first number 1, but you are right --- that came three years after the Marvelettes took Motown there first in 1961. Interestingly, the Marvelettes turned down "Where Did Our Love Go" and it was given to the Supremes!

The Shirelles were around in the late 50s. Smokey Robinson wrote a great many Motown songs. You ought to watch the Motown Story on KZbin.

Oh yeah.. Shirelles formed around 1957 in Passaic, New Jersey. Biggest hits were in the 60s though... Soldier Boy, Will you love me tomorrow and Dedicated to the one I love are just a few.... loved them...

Phil Spector was a very influential music producer in the 1960's and created the "Wall of Sound" style of instrumentation and tempo which so many of the girl groups sang to in the 60's

Asia, BJ the Marvelettes made the charts 23 times in their approximately 10 years. Motown’s first # 1 hit. (Please Mr. Postman) which Marvin Gaye played the drums on. They had several songs that were in the top 10. Great if underrated group. If you want to dig deeper into this rabbit hole, I’d recommend starting with, Too Many Fish In The Sea!

They were the First Girlband to go to Number One back in 1961. Sadly they went through more heartache than even The Supremes. Quitting The Group, not getting paid, not being able to use the Name properly. They helped epitomize The Original Girl Group Phenomenon. They are not from Chicago, Ill, but Inkster, MI. right outside Detroit, MI. Georgeanna Dobbins Co Wrote The Song but never got Paid Writer's Royalties, and she had to leave The Group before they hit the Big Time. She had to take care of her Mother and Brothers. She died in 2020, Gladys Horton died 10 Years ago of a Stroke. If you can check out Unsung and see their life story. This song was also covered by The Beatles and The Carpenters who took it to Number One.

Yes they did, my first time seeing the Carpenters they were on American Band Stand and they started singing Please Mr. Postman and I was like oh no, but to my surprise they did it a great job and I became a fan. I still love the original best. That song was the first number one hit for Motown. The Marvelettes are from Inkster Detroit and in the book they were considered from a little hick town.

I have always thought the story behind this song would be a great movie. The Marvellettes were formed by lead vocalist Gladys Horton, along with Wanda Young, Katherine Anderson, Juanita Cowert and Georgeanna Dobbins, for a high school talent contest. The prize for the top three winners was an audition for Tamla/Motown Records. Although they came in fourth place, they were also allowed to audition and of the four acts, were the only ones to pass the audition. When told that nothing less than original material would be key to landing a record deal, overnight Georgeanna Dobbins wrote "Please Mr. Postman." A few days later, they were in the recording studio. There was a great deal of excitement at the session and everyone in the studio, from drummer Marvin Gaye on up felt they had a smash record and by November of that year, it was the labels first #1 record. And, as they say, the rest is history! BTW, they're from Inkster, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit.

You should do some digging into the UK's Northern Soul scene of the 60's/70's. Basically, really obscure American soul tracks were discovered/rediscovered in the UK soul clubs. Marlena Shaw, Barbara Acklin, loads of others, it's an absolute blast

Another 1961 song that was short but so great. Chuck Jackson "I Don't Want to Cry" and shows proof of connection to Motown in the video. I was 11 yrs old in 61' so I remember all these great songs. The Marvelettes had this great sound and it always pops up over the years and for good reason.

Their look helped to promote the bouffant hairstyle made famous in 6o's. The Supemes even had commercials promoting a line of wigs called the Supreme collection. Be careful BJ. Asia and BJ, The Marvelettes were from Inkster, Mi., not Chicago. This song was recorded in April 1961 at Motown Records Hitsville USA Studio, Detroit, MI. and released August 21, 1961. Later in the year it went on to become the first Motown single to hit #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. In 1964, the Marvelettes turned down the song "Where Did Our Love Go". It was the given to The Supremes and it became the first of 5 consecutive #1 songs for them, The Supremes would go on to record 12 #1 hits from 1964 through 1969.

Oh yes, the marvelous Marvelettes. Of Motown acts I think The Marvelettes were underrated. Long before 'Sister Act' Martin Scorsese used this song in 'Mean Streets' in a way you won't forget. Don't forget about Stax/Volt records for Otis and the wicked Pickett, etc. And remember 'Don't Mess with Bill'. Great stuff.

Beatles did an extra cover of this. they were very influenced by the Marvelettes. The Carpenters had a number one remake of this in the mid 1970's as well. at a music fest I was fortunate to see them in the late 1980's, probably 2 of 3 were the originals. looks at one point in the video photos there were 4 of them.

Other female groups in that time period were the Ronettes, The Chiffons. There's others but I can't think of them right now.
