The Mask gives the wearer powers according to their personality. Stanley is a fan of old cartoons, so it makes him a living cartoon, and specifically a _Tex Avery_ cartoon. Avery pioneered the kind of extreme physical actions and facial reactions that you see brought into the "real world" in the film. (His cartoons also tended towards the risque, thus the whistling wolf character, who wouldn't have shown up in a Disney or Warner Bros cartoon.) Stanley's powers as a cartoon also warp the world around him, pulling everyone into his cartoon world. Thus no one is particularly freaked out by him, and he can initiate huge dance numbers, etc. He's basically Bugs Bunny on steroids. (The sequel sucked because they couldn't get Jim Carrey, and you're right - no one else can play him.)

@Lightswitch Whatever, dude. I'm not into rankings and lists and such. The Mask is the same type of character - a trickster, a Coyote figure. you can do the nitpicky thing if that's what gets you off.

Always that one guy that has to explain everything. We all have google dude. Takes 2 seconds to research this shit. Stop it. And no, he's not fucking Bugs Bunny on steriods. In the comics, The Mask was a lot darker and used to kill people. But they toned it down for the movie.

@@jean-pierre5221 Absolutely. Almost all of the character's actions are based in the world of mid-20th century cartoons. It's an entire visual language that isn't really around anymore - cartoons are very different these days. It's not just cartoons, either. He makes reference to a lot of things that 21st century people aren't going to get, especially at the lightning speed Carrey works in. The joke on Desi Arnaz, for example, is completely lost, as is the fact that the Mask shows up to a party in a zoot suit (as well as the way the music at the club automatically lines itself up with his attire).

99% people who watched this movie (myself included) have NO idea of how violent and maniacal this character is in the comics. Simply diabolical. Leave it to Jim Carrey to take something akin to Joker but 10x worse and make him family friendly.
@Armaldo468
@Armaldo468 7 ай бұрын
Ten times worse than the Joker? The Joker is a serial killer, mass murderer, rapist, terrorist, torturer, master manipulator, political assassin, and a litany of other things I’m probably forgetting. In almost all portrayals he’s an utter abomination, save for a scant few where he’s treated as a tragic villain or sometimes a sort of antihero. It’s pretty hard for most characters to top that asshole. If The Mask is really worse, I’d like to hear a few examples, please.

He first really showed up in Earth Girls Are Easy. But Jeff Goldblum was the draw there. He then gained a name for himself on the TV show In Living Color as the costume/physical humor guy. He hit REALLY big in 94. Ace Ventura. The Mask. Dumb and Dumber. All in one year. Legendary. Following that up with a more In Living Color type character with The Cable Guy. It wasn't good, it was dark. But he brought the comedy back with Liar Liar the next year and solidified himself as an amazing actor with The Truman Show. And sealed whatever deal there was by going back to comedy with The Grinch. This is all in 5 years.

I haven't watched this movie in ages and rewatching this along with you I was genuinely surprised the main guy ended up with Cameron Diaz's character while the red haired "down to earth" girl ended up being a traitor. Can't tell if it's super 90s for the blonde bombshell to be the ultimate "prize" or whether it was actually subversive to go with the bombshell. But it's kinda interesting.

One of Jim Carrey's best films. Don't watch the sequel, It's not worth it. Oh god no. The Mask was the first film adaptation of a property from Dark Horse comics. It was also an animated series that ran for 3 seasons and one of 3 consecutive animated series based on Jim Carrey films (along with Dumb & Dumber, Ace Ventura). Dark Horse has put out as much film and tv content as Marvel & DC. Wasn't getting as much credit for awhile. But lately more readers and viewers have been showing love for each adaptation of the source material. However, you should react to these other films based on DHC: Timecop with Van Damme (1994), Barb Wire with Pamela Anderson (1996), Virus with Jamie Lee Curtis & Mystery Men with an ensemble cast (1999), the Oscar-nominated American Splendor (2003), Hellboy with Ron Pearlman & Alien Vs Predator; follow up to Predator 2 (both from 2004), the Sin City films (2005 & 2014), Pathfinder with Karl Urban (2007) and Polar (2019) on Netflix. You've seen 300 (2006) which was a Dark Horse graphic novel. Check out 300:Rise of an Empire (2014), the movie sequel based on the graphic novel sequel, "Xerxes".

I'd love to see you react to a more dark humor, thoughtful thing Jim Carrey did recently (few years ago). A show called Kidding. Two seasons, not too long, it is a complete story. It's great. I absolutely loved it. Jim Carrey produced, co-wrote and lead that show. A few people from the crew frequent the small Reddit community dedicated to Kidding, too. Goes to show it was a passion project.
