Watching this movie again, I'm noticing how skilled and clever the choreography, and by extension, Captain Love is. He doesn't try the same strategy twice. When he first fights Zorro at 1:23, he's going for a quick kill. Every attack is a direct attack, but Zorro's defenses are too good for that. At 1:45 he tries to power through Zorro's defenses with strength and savagery, but Zorro matches his muscle. So when he faces Zorro the second time at 2:49, he changes tactics, focusing on disarming Zorro--and succeeds. But he's not counting on Zorro being as good a brawler as he is a fencer. It's just really good, thoughtful action storytelling!

I think that at 1:23 He's feeling him out. Not so much going for a direct attack because his thrust isn't straight enough to pierce him... He's more feeling out his style and reflexes. Realizing that's not going to be an easy fight he tries harder. The giveaway in my opinion is his smile. His smile is planned. So I think they asked the actor to smile right there because he's feeling out a worthy opponent

The fight at the end between Zorro and Love is also amazing, and so is the one near the beginning between Don Rafael and Don Diego. Watching this scene again 25 years later, I completely agree. The fight tells a story. The action looks real. It's one of the greatest examples of _show, don't tell_ I've ever seen in cinema. I love the way they gradually feel out each other's fighting styles, each character with their own distinct abilities. Zorro, graceful and adaptive, the captain aggressively switching up his style to try and overpower Zorro, then at 1:52 Don Raphael who is clearly not as youthful and strong as the captain but is more experienced and practiced, able to hold his own against this Zorro-imposter but just _can't actually beat him_ no matter how hard they stack the odds in their favor. The parries look like REAL parries, the movements look real, the aggression looks so real. I kind of want to see someone make a lightsaber-remake of this fight just so we can see what an actual good lightsaber fencing duel might look like haha.

Making movies like these stand out, far more than they did at the time of their release. A perfect action/adventure flick. On top of which, the characterization of Zorro, and bringing his fox-like agility and movements to the forefront, was an amazing idea. Exactly what it needed to be.

@surengrigorian78887 ай бұрын
@@Quinntus79 I am aware of the legend of the actual Joaquin Murrieta, but I would not characterize Zorro as being based on him. The original pulp magazine character was very much, from the outset, a member of the landed Spanish gentry in the New World. For that reason, I addressed my argument to the character of Zorro. Insofar as this film is trying to combine the two, as well as make Banderas' character the successor to the original Zorro, some allowance is in order, as I stated. But the character was very distinctly not intended to be a "man of the people", shaped by the streets. Zorro was a nobleman of the chivalric kind, who sacrificed his own safety, repute, financial well-being, freedom, etc. to fight on behalf of the common man. And his characteristics follow from that.

It's a nice reminder that Raphael was a formidable opponent to the original Zorro (the current one's teacher), and neither underestimating him nor being awed by him (just murderously angry at the ghost's return,) he proves that he's kept up his training and has enough experience to give the youth a run for his money.

It just occurred to me, that in all of action cinema America really does do sword play well. Steady cam, wide shots, long shots, he even gets attacked two people at a time for once. Why can’t we get that right with hand to hand??? Lol
@Skyfighter642 жыл бұрын
The simple answer is that It's required in sword fights that blows don't actually make contact overall. If the sword swing does connect, things tend to go south really fast for the person who got hit. Fistfights tend to need punches to make contact in order to really sell the power/danger factor for the fighters involved. This means actors actually getting hit, and potentially being hurt in the making of said fights. Hence quick cuts are often used to actually skip contact. Also, compared to a fistfight, sword fights are relatively slow affairs, with fairly sizable windups, and prolonged clashes. Exceptions apply, of course, but that is a general rule of thumb, imho. American film studios can, and have gotten some hand to hand fights done right, even in the post-Jason Bourne "Shakycam" era of action filmmaking. My best case in point is the bridge scene from "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Actually, most of the hand to hand combat scenes using Steve Rogers/Captain America or Bucky/Winter Soldier tended to be done pretty well in the MCU. This is all just my humble opinion, so feel free to disagree.

Particularly fascinating about the swordplay in this scene is how accurate it is in terms of attack vs. defense. More often than not I've consistently seen sword fights that involve a lot of swishing fancy moves, but no actual attempted lunging and attack moves until pivotal moments in the scenes, just so the fights will last dramatically longer (i.e. Star Wars, The Princess Bride, etc.). In this scene, every attack by each guard, Captain Love, and Don Rafael is pinpointed towards actually hitting Zorro, which is why each engagement is a micro-fight that lasts between 5 and 10 seconds, (sometimes less time). Meanwhile Zorro, the fox he is (no pun intended), just plays with them while not actually attempting to kill anyone.

Back when Chinese martial arts films were gaining popularity in the 70-2000 internationally, other cultural countries like Spanish, Mexico made these kinds of fight choreographies where most the actors do their own stunts and unpredictable tactics to defeat a group of their enemies. I hope when Zorro ever return on the big screen, it will keep the choreography like the old days

Fun fact: every sword strike in this movie is dubbed over. The safety swords they used on set were aluminum and made anti-climactic "thuds" on impact. So they dubbed each and every strike with a satisfying "ping!". EVERY SINGLE ONE

I mean…most sounds in movies are not the actual on-set sounds. Its called foley.
@trequor2 жыл бұрын
@@chrisbutlerart That's technically true, but not totally true. Also it was less true back when they built real sets for real people to act on. When 90% of the movie is CGI then you've got to mix all the sound anyways. Individual voices speaking independently then mixed in post. This was not the way Zorro was done. You are still technically correct in that the music wins the majority by volume and is obviously not on set. But many other sounds, like voices and footsteps and the clatter of glasses came straight off the sets in past days.
@chrisbutlerart2 жыл бұрын
@@trequor sorry…I don’t mean to be rude, but this is totally incorrect. This movie was hardly “ye olden days” of filmmaking. This is post-Jurassic park, for crying out loud. *Nearly all sounds* in a film like this…from footsteps to environmental sounds to random things moving around in the background…we’re inserted post-editing via foley. And by the time Zorro was made this had been the case for literally decades. Adding foley is not something that is relatively new for CGI. “Many other wounds like voices, footsteps, and the clatter of glasses came straight off the sets in past days”….sorry my friend, but maybe in like the early 60s, not in the late 90s/early 00s. In fact you’d probably be surprised how much of the actual dialog is done after filming via something called ADR. The goal is to capture as much real dialog on set, but for lots of reasons a lot of the actors’ lines need to be re-recorded later. A few movies are 100% ADR…I think (might be mistaken) Interview with the Vampire is an example of a totally re-recorded film. Bottom line, in most every movie you’ve ever seen, the audio is almost 100% created in post.
@trequor2 жыл бұрын
@@chrisbutlerart I know what ADR is dipshit. This is NOT Jurassic Park. This movie was made in an older style. I'd love to see some real data from you.
@chrisbutlerart2 жыл бұрын
@@trequor I'm pretty inclined to think you *didn't* know what ADR was if you honestly thought a movie like Mask of Zorro is "an older style" like its some kind of throwback film. This was pretty typical of a mid-to-high budget flick from the late 90s. Its Antonio Banderas & Anthony Hopkins, for Christ's sake...its not a low budget film. You seem to think this is some kind of *primitive film.* I don't need 'data' to know that Mask of Zorro was made the way most studio movies have been made for a long time...meaning it uses foley as much as *any* major film for like the last 50 years. "Made in an older style".... seriously? lol What does that even mean? What about this film do you think is "older style"? It was absolutely contemporary for its day. This movie came out in July of '98. Do you realize that means that *The Matrix* was probably in post-production when this came out? You seem to be saying its an 'older style' merely because its not a CGI film and its set in the 1860s. Kid, if you're going to try to talk authoritatively (and rudely) to strangers online, at least have some idea what you're talking about. "Older style..." lol

This is an epic fight. The only thing that slightly lets it down is when Zorro stands in front of the map banner and Don Montero says "Kill him!" and, despite Zorro clearly having run to the right to cut the ropes holding the banner up, they all still charge at the banner and not Zorro (and so become ensnared). The bad editing let that shot down.

The part where Zorro tricks the two guards in dropping their weapons (Making Captain Love jump a little in the process when Zorro gestures for the guards to drop their swords on the ground) and getting them to face the window, so that he can kick them out of there in such a polite manner, so that it would be less men to go up against always made me laugh as a kid 🤣🤣🤣🤣
