If I had a chunk of a Roman Villa under my garden, I would keep it fully exposed and protected.

Sounds like an oxymoron, exposed and protected 😂. I do know what you mean, I’d put a glass around it so we could see it and protect it

Reburying it IS protecting it. It survived so long because it was underground.

Interesting how only back in 2010, the ubiquitous smart phones everyone would be carrying nowadays, are nowhere to be seen, rather, just a few people with digital cameras and video recorders. I think I like the less 'techie' time much better!

Fascinating series. Love how they completely ignored any possible Medieval stuff as they blasted through to the Roman layer, but hey: that's a 3-day dig for ya. Love how the Time Team consistently laser in (pun intended) on what they re looking for. They're incredibly efficient. (Which makes me think that they'd already discounted the possibility of Medieval stuff before they got to Litlington).

If I Iived in Litlington, I'd be thinking about the next steps to recover Roman treasure from the villa and bath house. Add some Roman coins to my collection and display a marble bust in the parlor to stimulate intellectual conversations when guests arrive for dinner. As for the cemetery, I am torn over the issue of disturbing the graves of those who are no longer allowed to rest in peace. Yes, cemeteries are important sources of rare ancient artifacts, but these offerings were left with the deceased to take with them to the next world. We are possibly dealing with the subject of some type of interdimensional transfer. Who's to say that archaeologists recovering such artifacts don't have an impact upon the original intent of placing them there in the first place?

Why not? I doubt you'll find any Roman coins or pottery - but you might actually dig up a paleoindian site, or woodland stone artifacts...

I'm sure if it isn't a Bath House, it is quite possible that such a grand House would surely have a Sauna as well.

Please help . . . What becomes of sites after the Time-Machine leaves. Does serious archaeology continue 'off-screen' ?

I found a website called Wessex Archeology which has a more detailed report on Litlington. So I gather there was some follow up. Google "Litlington roman villa" and it should be among the top results.

It will usually get reburied, as its protected under the soil. There are much bigger and better sites that the Universities work on.

What are the laws WRT finding Roman Villas in one’s backyard? If I found a Roman Villa in my backyard I’d be famoose! - I’m in the US - I don’t have a backyard However, were I to live in an area that contains backyards in which it’s possible to find a Roman Villa, I’d be “come on in!” But I can see if someone wouldn’t want to be so accommodating.
