The Mathera-Hill Railway (Documentary in HD) | Toy Trains - Part III

The health resort Matheran, in the west of India, is located just a few kilometers from the metropolis Mumbai, on a plateau about 800 meters above sea level.
Scriptwriter Peter Weinert and his team travelled there on a beautiful railway line. Through the images and information about its history, it is easy to understand why this line stands as candidate to be a World Heritage Site.
The Kalka-Shimla Railway, the Kangra-Valley Railway and the Matheran-Hill Railway form a network of narrow gauge railways in India that are lovingly called „toy trains“.
These trains travel on narrow gauges over hundreds of breathtaking bridges in curves and tunnels that slowly meander through the captivating Himalayan countryside.

It is advisable to visit the hills of maharashtra during or soon after rains. An overnight rain totally turns these places in to lush green hill stations. Winters it is dry and dusty...But still beautiful.the jungles around are unique.

I am planning on taking the "Toy Train" to Matheran in October and this video shows me what I can expect. Well documented presentation on Matheran Railway system. Hopefully Steam engine will be restored for a monthly or weekend joy ride purpose. It will also be eye opener foe younger generation to understand how transportation evolved over decades. O Had visited with family twice, it was more greener over the slopes of mountains, sadly Maharashtra State Forest Department seems to have done ver little to spread greenery on these mountain ranges.

A fine and well narrated documentary. A brief but pertinent matter would have been a reference of the elite and well to do members of the community and who still possess fine bungalows and manage upmarket resorts. The Britishers during the Raj built some palatial lodges; Elphinstone Lodge, Underwood Lodge, Lords Hotel are few that come to mind, and a horse racing track, Olympia.
