In regards to the original intention of the simulacra and simulation book to explain the process of degradation of information and symbols of representation, I would posit that the intended meaning is the process by 'knowledge' itself which is corrupted by layers of sophisticated misunderstandings of the source materials and facts. Examples could include the syncretism of religious deities into one another because the original knowledge of the deity had become a second or third stage symbol of representation and thus mutable instead of a universal truth. The god of all gods just became another god at the whims of a fanciful and fickle people who miscontrue change with, "progress".
