Just before production began, Keanu had neck surgery to fuse a pair of compressed vertebrae that were slowly paralyzing him. So he endured the four months of martial arts training with considerable pain as his neck healed and even had numbness in his legs. He doesn't do many kicks in the movie because he quite literally couldn't feel his legs. The feeling in his legs would eventually return, and Keanu later joked that he would be able to do more kicks in the sequel. "I'll do five kicks this time instead of four."

Such an iconic film. Fun factoid: The studio was getting nervous about costs. So the Wachioski's sent over the first "dailies" and it was the opening fight of Trinity vs the cops + the rooftop. No more pestering from the studio after that!

The opening scene does a perfect job communicating what a threat the agents represent by showing Trinity effortlessly taking out the cops but then running away from the Agents in complete terror.

Loved your reaction :) But before reacting to matrix 2 reloaded, you really MUST react to the animatrix (or watch on your own if you really can't). These are 9 shorts stories on the matrix universe who helps to understand it and to elarge the universe and the lore. Actually there are only 4 of the 9 that really matters to better understand the matrix sequels : -The second Renaissance : It's a matrix prequel which tells what happened between humans and machines and why the matrix was created -A kid's story : Origin story of a new character in matrix 2 & 3 -Last flight of the Osiris : It's an introduction to matrix reloaded, litterally a couple of hours before. Btw, matrix 2 (reloaded) and matrix 3 (revolutions) are actually a 4 hours film cut in two parts (they were shot back to back) and this is why they were both released the same year with only a 6 months gap. A little bit like the lord of the rings which were shot back to back as well. Can't wait to see your reactions to the matrix sequels (and perhaps animatrix) ;) To be more clear, this is the right order for watching the matrix saga : -the matrix (1999) -the animatrix (2003) -the matrix reloaded (2003) -the matrix revolutions (2003)

Hi! I have to congratulate Joe for this ultra pro poker face he managed, once again, to keep during the reaction. The Matrix is iconic for 1990s and it changed how serious sf and even philosophical subjects could be treated. Sadly sequels are rather weak, but Animatrix is pretty good and you might want to try it one day. Take care!

I really cannot understate how much of an effect this movie had on my world-view when I saw it in theaters. To call it eye-opening and thought-provoking for me is selling it short. Smith's monologue about humanity being a virus struck a chord in me I'd never felt before.

The whole concept was cutting edge in physics then, as holographic universe theory was fairly new and revived a concept as old as Plato's Allegory of the Cave, some 2500 years ago. Consensus dream theory coming from metaphysical psychology is cutting edge now, building on the experimental evidence of holographic universe theory, "god" as the collective unconscious.

@@armorfoursleep @armorfoursleep Well yeah, technically true, metaphysics, maybe para-physics more accurately, imo. But if the experimentation continues to hold, I guess it doesn't matter what you call it. The big breakthrough with the Google quantum mainframe that opened that wormhole through time, not only confirmed holographic universe theory, but showed that Einstein-Rosen bridges (wormholes) and quantum entanglement, superposition, spooky action at a distance, strange attractors and other chaos and quantum effects are the same phenomenon, just described by as yet unreconciled mathematical paradigms. Quantum effects are ubiquitous at every scale, and we ourselves are wormholes from our past to our future, writing into the physical block chain of consensus reality -- or so it's beginning to appear. More testing needed, probably forever, or until time isn't a factor.

Two major things which the studio changed which would have put The Matrix waaaaaaay ahead of its time: 1) The Matrix was originally conceived as a parallel processing neural net, not a battery farm. Human brains are probably useful for processing, not so much for power, but a studio exec thought that would be too complex. 2) Switch was supposed to represent transgender-identifying. She was male-presenting in one world, and female-presenting in the other (though I don't remember which atm), but that was considered way too controversial for 1999. Both Wachowskis came out as trans women after this trilogy of movies were finished, and hate that the whole "red pill" thing became a right wing meme when they intended very much the opposite (the waking up from traditional norms).

The directors, the Wachowski sisters, (brothers at the time), originally wanted Will Smith for Neo, but he was committed to Men In Black, and they wanted Sean Connery for Morpheus, but he didn't do sci-fi at the time. Later, when The Matrix made so much money, Connery did the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The original creator of the concept of the film, Sophia Stewart, who also created Terminator, said the two films were intended to be in the same universe.

"He can't use his powers in the real world". Well... not gonna say anything as of yet. This movie came out exactly when it was supposed to: right when everyone thought the world was gonna turn upside down because of the Y2K bug. Most hardware/software assumed 2 digits for the year as in 19xx, so when we reached 2000 computers would assume it was 1900 and that had the potential to wreak havoc. So imagine watching this movie after all that fear mongering!

He went from just Keanu's double on The Matrix to the martial arts coordinator on the other two Matrix films. So, one night, after a friend's birthday dinner, I'm riding in the back of a limo with her girlfriend and one other guy who is reciting, in the proper voices, the entire Smith/Neo interrogation scene. 3 things I don't like about this movie: 1. If humans were too smart to accept a "perfect" Matrix, why not use dumb animals like cows or something? They're big, dumb, and give off more heat. 2. Regarding the 'Bellybutton scene'. If unrealistic tools can be coded into the Matrix to extract tracking bugs, why not code-in unrealistic weapons too? (i.e.- Laser guns and gadgets) 3. If knowledge can be downloaded into your brain, why wouldn't they already know how to do everything and know how to operate every vehicle imaginable?

My first permanent job was as at our brand new regional multiplex (the region had small cinemas, but the nearest multiplex was 150 miles away!). We opened with The Matrix and Gladiator and then 1999/2000 turned out to be one of the best and busiest years for movies in a decade; it was certainly a baptism of fire for a first job! EDIT: if you do watch the next two, I'd strongly recommend you try and find the Animatrix to watch in-between films 2 & 3, it's a series of animated shorts which fill in a bunch of lore and add in extra stories all drawn by major anime studios.

I had a feeling my brain melt after that movie, as i cached some of the things immediately. Later, i needed much more re watching of it so i can connect more pieces which i didn't understand immediately. Plus, talking about AI was still very very early stage of some physicists, so very few people even heard of the possibility of some near future accomplishments in computers. It was, and still is no.1 movie for me. Btw, not a reaction i expected, but good enough. Maybe, they are too dependent of a system ;)

I love Neo and the Oracle. He’s not the One yet and she tells him that. She tells him he has the gift but he’s waiting for something (his next life). She tells him he’ll have to decide to sacrifice himself to save Morpheus. So Neo who isn’t the one yet decides to save Morpheus, dies, resurrects, and now in his next life he’s the One and he knows it. She’s like a metaphysical GPS. He had to walk the path she showed him to reach his fate of being the One, yet he still had the free will to choose that fate.

This movie literally changed the way I think. I was 19 at the time and have seen it in the cinemas 5 times. It made me question everything I know, never accept anything as a fact and take time to dig deep in order to find proof. Looking back now I can see a couple rather big decisions that would've went a different way have I not seen this movie. The stunt coordinator of this movie is the director of the John Wick movies. There are several theories out there that the John Wick universe is just a deeper layer of the Matrix or a training program for Neo lol. If you look up some BTS footage ( lots of them on YT ) on how they did these shots of a camera panning around a person frozen in a moment you will find some mind blowing stuff. It's not CGI. :) This is such an iconic movie, completely turned the action genre upside down. We have seen nothing like this before and it completely blew our minds. I guess it was like Star Wars when it came out. If you guys want to see some lore stuff that explains the war between the humans and the machines watch the Animatrix. It's an animated movie about 90 minutes long and it containes several smaller chapters giving you a background on the world and how did they ended up here. Pretty good stuff really worth a watch it adds a lot of context. Great stuff as usual guys, hope you'll watch the rest as well.

The Wachowskis, along with Tom Tykwer, adated from the novel by David Mitchell and directed the movie Cloud Atlas, which Hugo Weaving is also in, along with Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Keith David, Hugh Grant, Susan Sarandon, and many more great actors. It's an epic sci-fi movie and has multiple plots occurring during six eras in time. Cast members perform multiple roles across these time periods. It's a fantastic movie, but it's a little complicated, which may be why it didn't do very well. In any case, I first saw it when it came out in 2012, and while I've seen it several times since then, I've thought about it often since. It's just one of those movies, like this one, that makes you consider reality from a different perspective. post discussion: Thought experiment for you, is Neo really the one? Nothing really suggests that what he ends up doing is impossible for anyone else, he just happens to be helped by the intentions of prophecy. I think that's why I really levitated to this movie, as a young kid that was very shy, Neo is a blank canvas for everyone, anyone can resist from a system of control, they just have to believe. Also side note, the main cast (Keanu Reeves, Carrie Ann Moss, Lawrence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving) spent 6 months before the movie training martial arts and combat training. So many of the stunts you see, is actually them doing it physically. Keanu's stunt double is, coincidentally, also the director of the John Wick movies.

I jumped on the internet bandwagon relatively early, and had a bad tendency to spoil movies for myself by obsessively looking up trailers, reading fan sites, etc. It didn't help that trailers then (as now) had a tendency to spoil their own movies. This movie was different; unless you were *really* aggressive you had to walk in knowing almost nothing. It was liberating. After watching the three movies, you should react to Animatrix. It is a canon anthology anime set in the Matrix universe. More specifically, you should react to The Second Renaissance Part 1 and 2, which are the episodes that show how the Machine War started. As for, "what made he feel that something was wrong with the world", it was just instinct, something that everyone who escaped have. It is the same feeling the people in the "perfect world first Matrix" had, just not everyone feels it because the world is "believable" to their unconscious mind, which the perfect world wasn't.

when i initially saw this i was confused why they'd have those weird guns that shoot electricity instead of bullets. and only very much later I realized it's because they were never meant for humans, they're meant for sentinels! of course they were designed to fry electronics rather than cause physical damage!

The ripples in the building's windows when the helicopter crashed seemed so fake to me then. But they showed the same effect in twin tower footage of 9-11. I guess it's either real or an artifact of the Matrix.

The second ("Reloaded") has a fantastic chase scene, but #3 was very weak. I did enjoy the last ("Resurrections") much better than the critics - did a good job of tying up some loose ends and showing the characters as older IMO.

Polarizing opinion: This movie is not science-fiction. it's stylized social commentary. Some say its an allegory for christianity, they'll point out room numbers and the (spoiler) scene in the hallway. For others its about the trans experience, they'll reference switch, and the directors' personal lives. I argue that its about the system itself that produces injustices and hatred for others. My proof is the lyric "you know they went after king, when he spoke out on vietnam" being left in the movie edit. It plays just as the credits begin rolling. Why would they leave a reference to mlk and nam in a sci fi movie about fake 1999? I believe i found my answers in the speech he gave in 1967 titled, "3 evils of society". A speech he made about nam. My conclusion: Machines = the system itself Agents = goverments and authorities defending said system Resistance = people helping each other instead of themselves And most importantly..... Neo = the audience, who can make lasting changes just by knowing the problem and believing it's capable

Thank you for the reaction! The Matrix is my favorite film, and I have some insights to share with you. The original idea for The Matrix to exist was not to turn humans into batteries. It was to turn humans into extra processing chips, but the internet was a relatively new concept in 1999, and Warner Brothers didn't think people would fully grasp the concept. The reason why Agent Smith says, "No, Lieutenant. Your men are already dead." is because none of the officers transformed into agents. The agents take over bodies in the presence of "red pills," and since he didn't transform, he already knows that they are dead. This is the same exact reason why Switch pulls a gun on Neo at the Adam's Street Bridge. If Neo started transforming into an agent, they would only have a few seconds to shoot him before he fully transformed. Switch was originally supposed to switch genders between The Matrix and the real world to represent trans individuals, but Warner Brothers thought it would be too confusing for viewers. Both of the Wachowskis are trans. The reason why Cypher was scared by Neo was because Cypher was directly looking at the restaurant where he would be meeting Smith. That's why he says that all he sees is blonde, brunette, and redhead. Because the restaurant had a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead.

nah man its perfect. It changed the action genre forever and invented a lot of stuff to film those scenes ( like a character frozen in time and the camera is panning around...that's not CGI).

For me, in regards to 2 and 3, they stretched out one movie into two, just so they could make it a trilogy, Matrix 2 and 3 should have just been The Matrix 2, and it would have been much better, but both 2 & 3, because of them stretching it out, ruined both movies. But as I said, the largest issue is because it is all stretched out, too much fluff, some scenes go on way longer than needed, it has been awhile since I saw them, but that is what I remember my take-away being, the substance itself I don't think was bad.

I wonder who has the quicker, return time, the Agents or tbe Cylons. C version depends on the proximity of Resurrection Ship. But man, Smith was pancaked by a train and seconds later got off that same train!

The original plot was not hat the AI were using humans as batteries but as a neural net. However back when this was made it was decided that would be too complex for the audience to understand so they went with the mush lamer battery scenario.
